Just So Stories
Just So Stories | Ruyard Kipling
19 posts | 53 read | 11 to read
The Just So Stories were written by Rudyard Kipling and published in 1902. The stories are fanciful accounts about how various phenomena came to be. How the Camel Got his Hump is an example. Each story is accompanied by a poem. The dialect is inspired by a formalized Indian speech pattern, which makes them wonderful to read aloud. Stories included in this collection are as follows: How the Whale got his Throat -- How the Camel got his Hump -- How the Rhinoceros got its Skin -- How the Leopard got his Spots -- The Elephant's Child -- The Sing-Song of Old Man Kangaroo -- The Beginning of the Armadillos -- How the First Letter was Written -- How the Alphabet was Made -- The Crab that Played with the Sea -- The Cat that walked by Himself -- The Butterfly that Stamped.

What a cool dad Kipling must have been to concoct these outlandish bedtime stories for his “Best Beloved” daughter Effie! If he didn‘t tell them “just so” or altered one word, she‘d correct him! My favorites: how elephants got their trunks and how the first letter was written. But I had to agree with the once humpless camel. I, too, would rather sit still and “frowst with a book by the fire.”

3.5/5🌟
Cute and funny stories that Rudyard Kipling would tell to his children. Loved the daddy-daughter duo Tegumai and Taffimai. And the explanations he wrote for his illustrations were great. 😂 #childrensclassicread2021

MemoirsForMe Great review! The daughter-daddy duo was also my favorite. 4y

These stories (sigh of happiness) are still as beloved as they were when I was young. I tried to be mindful of racism or entitlement, but just saw origin stories of how wonderful creatures became the way you see them today. I did notice that these animals were from all around the world where Great Britain had a strong hold through colonialism. I googled and learned that these stories came at the request of his daughter. "Make them just so."

@TheBookHippie I still enjoy the stories of how animals came to have certain qualities. They are just so wacky and fun. I remember more than others so I must have reread only my favorites. I don't remember the illustrations and captions explaining the illustrations. Does your copy have these illustrations and captions?

TheBookHippie No, in fact I just put on hold what is supposed to be an 'original' art copy as mine is pretty pictures, but modern and very colorful, so I want to see the original like this one you have pictured. 4y

There are books that stick around and become classics because they offer important insight or simple beauty. Then there are those that just won‘t go away, for whatever reason, and have nothing worthwhile to offer. This books belongs to the latter category. I see no reason to share this with the kiddo, so off the shelves it goes.

@Cathythoughts @jhod @RachelO here is your answer as to how I chose my name! 😂

#AddictedtoTheChase

Cathy, have you sent The Butcher's Hook yet? No pressure, just wondering.

@Libby1 have you sent me this round of #lmpbc yet? Again, no pressure - just wondering!

Cathythoughts Jenny, my apologies! I‘ll put that in the post in the next few days & I‘ll let you know when it‘s on the way 👍🏻❤️ 5y
rockpools 😂😂 That‘s brilliant! I was almost a Jennifer (or Deborah) myself, but was never asked my opinion on the matter. I‘m guessing you‘re still happy with your choice! 5y

When my daughter moved back home after college, she stored boxes in the garage. My husband found a box of her books, and this was in it. The inscription is Our Best Beloved, Daddy and Mommy, 1989. She was 3 years old at the time. Sad to say that living in the garage has warped this beauty. 🙁

Cinfhen Awww, so nice to find the book but too bad about the condition 6y

Day 27 of #riotgrams : Yes, I have more than one edition of Just So Stories. This was, apparently, part of a set before I found it. It's a 1908 edition, copyright 1902 and 1903. Beyond, you can see a corner of my very thoughtful Chanumas gift from NOS (Number One Son)—a drawing of Lorado Taft's Sons of Deucalion. #retrocoverfun #booklover #oskeewowwowIllinois

I've recently found this collection and they are adorable! Each book is two in one and the one is upside down while the other is right side up. So if you were reading and finished the first and wanted to continue to the next, you would have to flip your book to read it! Love!

This book belonged to my dad and my uncle when they were little, and my dad used to read it to my brother, sister and I! And I've still got it on my bookshelf after all these years! 📚

#HalfPriceBookHaul As I was getting the last bit of my Secret Santa Goes Postal gift, I just had to walk over to the old collections side& found these ! I am especially excited for the Just So Stories, bc it is part of the Literary Companions series, that has two stories in one! The rest of books of the series was there, but I am too poor to buy all just yet- though I am happy I now have this to join my first LC Little Women/Little Men edition🤓🎉

#TBT this is the book I have the strongest memories of having read aloud to me as a child. We have an ancient copy that my grandma read to my dad and he then read to me! Ironically my dad is not a big reader but I love that he pasted this on to me 💗📚
