Such a good book! I have not read anything about adoption until now, and I feel like this was a perfect start. It was very heartfelt and educational; it made me think of my own Black friends who were adopted, in a different way; it made me think differently of how they‘ve talked about future parenting prospects in their lives. Adoption is raved about by the anti-abortion crowd, and white saviors. There is so much that isn‘t said, that is ⬇️

JenniferEgnor deliberately left out, that is harmful. We should be having the conversation about all of the intersections. Parenting isn‘t for me—I don‘t want to parent—but if I did, adoption is the route I would take. It‘s a beautiful gift but it‘s also a hard one—and we should remember and respect that, and those stories. They have much to teach us. 6mo
JenniferEgnor I also think it was important how the author shared the misogyny she experienced surrounding her adoption decision and around the parenting she felt was right for her family. Extra bonus: 3 stories similar to hers at the end of the book. Highly recommended read. Shown: the author with Austin and Cherish. (edited) 6mo

Very insightful, taking the reader along on her journey, giving first hand accounts of the adoption process or should I say, the Black experience into becoming a mother, the myths and misperceptions that surrounds it. Nefertiti does a great job at deconstructing this bias in her memoir:hoping to erase the stereotypes of this very uneven playing field within Black Motherhood.

1. Tagged. Finished it yesterday.
2. I think Lady Darby and Veronica Speedwell would make a great detective duo!
3. I can go for either if it‘s done well. I really like multiple POVs in The Guest List and the His Dark Materials series.

Don‘t feel like tagging anyone! Feel free to play!

I‘m not the target audience for this book, but found it extremely interesting. This is a memoir about a Black single woman wanting to adopt a Black baby in America. The prejudice, the process, raising a black boy in America, hyper masculinity, and how black children are treated differently when they act the same as their white peers. It‘s also about her relationship with her parents and family. I would recommend this book to anyone.

I enjoyed learning about her life and her journey to adoption. The story is heartwarming while still engaging the challenges of being a black mom in a white world.

Great book. Not sure what drove me to read it, but it‘s worth the time. Good insight into one woman‘s childhood in Black adoption (her term) to being a foster/adoptive mother. #snuggleinandread is over. 9 hours and 6 minutes into #24B4Monday. 7 hours and 23 minutes for #DeweysReadathon.

This memoir of adoption and motherhood by Neferiti Austin also provides a much needed voice of black women adopting black children. She covers the process, dealing with birth families, dealing with new forms of mansplaining, and funny moments like teaching her son to pee standing up.⤵️

ReadingEnvy I think the idea that unifies her experience with other experiences I've heard from adoptive parents is the importance of the community that emerges, which isn't always the people you had in your life before adopting.

The next book for #24B4Monday. @TheReadingMermaid @Andrew65

Finished so far: The Optimistic Decade, All Ships Follow Me, Like This Afternoon Forever, and Gravity Well. I‘m not going to reach 24 hours, or even close but I‘d say that this has been pretty successful so far even so. (Gatsby continues to ignore me and all the books.) #schnauzersoflitsy
