Love in the Time of Global Warming
Love in the Time of Global Warming | Francesca Lia Block
16 posts | 24 read | 53 to read
From the bestselling author of "Weetzie Bat" comes a stunning reimagining of Homer's "Odyssey" set in post-apocalyptic Los AngelesAfter the Earth Shaker, which all but destroyed Los Angeles, seventeen-year-old Penelope (Pen) sets out into the wasteland in search of her family, her journey guided by a tattered copy of Homer's "Odyssey." Soon she begins to realize her own abilities and strength as she faces false promises of safety, the cloned giants who feast on humans, and a madman who wishes her dead. On her voyage, Pen learns to tell stories that reflect her strange visions, while she and her fellow surivors navigate the dangers that lie in wait.In her signature lyrical style, Francesca Lia Block has created a world that is beautiful in its destruction and as frightening as it is lovely. "Love in the Time of Global Warming has" shades of science fiction, fantasy, and dystopic disaster.A Top Ten ALA Rainbow Project Book"Block s trademark magical realism works. . . . there s something encouraging about seeing four queer kids on an epic journey across the post-apocalyptic American Southwest." This book was a trip. Not a happy one. A very dark story of a girl trying to find her family after the world ends and there are cannibalistic giants roaming the wasteland that used to be Earth. Loosely based off of the Odyssey. I probably would have enjoyed this more if the world wasn't so awful right now. 3.5 stars

This one was just there. Nothing special. Had so much potential and just flopped for me.

A book that kept me reading! It has a beautiful dreamlike atmosphere with a hint of magical realism. I thought it was a really interesting look at Homer‘s Odyssey. And I loved the art history. #mythology #fantasy #magicalrealism #YA

Ahhhhh after seeing a post by @jessica about Book Outlet's sale, I may have ordered a few books for myself....in addition to the other order I placed there earlier this week. 😬 I'm out of control with my books bought and books read ratio right now. I know most of you can empathize 😆

LeahBergen I buy LOTS of books from this site (and just placed a great big order, too 😂) 8y
Yamich49 @LeahBergen At least I'm not alone. 😂 I just recently discovered this site and I know it's gonna be a problem. 👀 But there are SUCH GOOD DEALS I can't resist! 8y
LeahBergen I just looked at your pic again and realized that I ordered The Girl From Everywhere, too. 😀 (and I checked my own receipt and found that I ordered 14 books! But hey ... only 6 of those are for me; the rest are Xmas presents 😂) 8y

Yamich49 @LeahBergen 😂😂at least you bought some for gift giving. Only 1 of the 15 I bought this week was for someone else. 🙃 8y
Yamich49 @brilliantglow Right? You can't stop at just one! 8y
Yamich49 @Bibliogeekery Thanks! They've all been ones I've been really wanting to read so that was my excuse. 👀 8y
MartinaLove We all understand! I have a problem with book shopping too lol not a bad problem to have thought! 📚I like the anticipation I have to hold new books in my hands looking at it carefully as if I never hold a book before lol 8y

I really enjoyed this YA post-apocalyptic take on the Odyssey (that references the original text a lot) where queer and trans youth go on a quest that is informed and inspired by many great works of art and literature. It was a fast, fun read. I'm definitely going to check out the next book!

hallsfair This sounds great! Loving the cover too 8y

This book is a really fun read - a group of queer and trans youth on a post-apocalyptic quest!

lilycobalt I didn't get Francesca Lia Block when I was in high school but I wonder if I would now that I know I'm queer. Added to stack. 8y

Reading this book is like watching a movie painted by Rembrandt. There is so much rich attention to detail, you feel like you are right there, experiencing everything with Pen. Even though this book is so short, it took me ages to finish because I could live forever in every individual line. 10/10 ✨

BetaZee Fantastic book photo!! 9y
