The historical parts were interesting, the self-help ideas of the author less so. The author REALLY doesn't like Hadrian and seems to read the Historia Augusta less critically than most historians.

The author brings Marcus Aurelius' Meditation and the works of other thinkers from early Stoicism to our contemporary world in a refreshing way. Robertson builds a bridge between the ancient stoic school of philosophy and modern-day psychology. Also, his personal-development insights throughout the chapters feels subtle and grounded in history. A must-read!

I recommend exposure to this perspective to broaden your reading spectrum. However, the content is weighty & requires time to process.

Finished my 1st book of the year! This one was 1 part biography of Marcus Aurelius, 1 part explanation of Stoicism as a philosophy of life, and 1 part self-help book that applies to all human beings cause we all got the feels, smart brains, and live with each other. My favorite chapter was on anger but felt like instructions on how to love your fellow man. 💚

When reading about the “10 Gifts From Apollo” the second “gift” of “Consider a person‘s character as a whole” and Donald Robertson‘s explanation was so touching and beautiful it nearly brought me to tears. It helped me to understand myself a little better and put words to how I approach people as a whole and clients as a therapist. 💚

I have to say that this book has one of the best introductions I‘ve ever read. Mr. Robertson, a cognitive behavioral therapist and founding member of the Modern Stoicism group, gives a candid account of his past and how philosophy in general and Stoicism in particular helped him turn his life around. I was very moved by it and reminded me of the crucial role philosophy has played in my own life.

Just finished the introduction to How to Think like a Roman Emperor & all I can say is it touched my soul. I had not felt that “love for philosophy” since my philosophy classes days as a undergrad; those same feelings as falling in love...Difficulty breathing, tightness in chest, warm fuzzy feelings of joy...💚😊

Diving into this one! This will be the start of my 3 therapy books at once rotation. After a chapter in each I‘ll switch to another cause I‘m just too excited for them all. The other contenders are on sex with disabilities and sensate focus. Let the knowledge absorption begin! (Oh and I chose to start with this one cause I just finished How To Be a Stoic last week & loved it so I wanted more!).
