Read this in a couple of nights.... it is blizzarding here in NI tonight and this is def the book for curling up in front of the fire with.... creepy, eerie but also so beautiful. ❄️👍
This story of a rare-book dealer haunted by the manifestation of a child's hand gripping his own started well, developed with sufficient interplay between the mundane and ghostly to make it creepily atmospheric, and Hill's descriptions of locale all added to the building tension which the ending, unfortunately, didn't quite pay off for me. Still a low pick, and if you like the classic ghost stories of E. F. Benson and M. R. James, then you'll 👇
"It was a little before nine o'clock, the sun was setting into a bank of smokey violet cloud and I had lost my way."

"I do collect books...in a disorganised sort of way, for my own interest and pleasure. My Chelsea flat is filled with them. My resolution every New Year is to halve the number of books I have and every year I fail to keep it. For every dozen I sell or give away, I buy twenty more."
Err ... ?????

After picking up this one, I discovered Hill is a friend of Michael Gove 🤮, who defended her 2017 article in the right wing Spectator magazine, where she announced her boycott of an independent bookshop for not (in her opinion) stocking enough pro Donald Trump books 🤨
Can I separate art from artist? Will her (in my opinion) odious beliefs & associations taint the reading experience? I read a short story collection of hers that I enjoyed, so🤞🏻
I dont normally go for ghost stories but the blurb really sucked me in and i couldn't resist!
Hopefully it's as good as i feel it could be 🤞
"It was a little before nine o'clock, the sun was setting into a bank of smoky violet cloud and I had lost my way. I reversed the car in a gateway and drove back half a mile to the fingerpost."
You can guarantee two things when you pick up a Susan Hill book - 1) it will be well written and 2) it will be creepy. This is a good old fashioned ghost story, it‘s easy to read and like most books in the supernatural / horror genre, I devoured it. I wouldn‘t say it‘s my favourite Susan Hill novel but I liked it and it‘s gorgeous cover art enough to keep it in my collection.
In this creepy story, the last thing you‘ll want to hear is #IWannaHoldYourHand . 😱

Less is more perfectly captures Susan Hill's style... Definitely reading more books written by her. #readingWomen
Her writing is so alluring that I read it right away. This makes a great choice for #Booked2018 #spooky read but I know I will read other such titles later in the year.
Meanwhile, returning the unread #librarybooks which will be KIV for the various upcoming prompts.
I rarely post foodie pics but this is too special... Just bade farewell to my favorite café.
Many happy memories, reading moments, sipping that cuppa of instant bliss.
Now I no longer have that special place to go...
Incidentally the Susan Hill book I decided to borrow also has blue cover! Haha...
This may be added to the spooky read for #Booked2018 although I already had another title in mind ;D
I picked up a copy of Susan Hill's The Small Hand in a hotel bar in Krakow last week and was gripped enough to download it to finish it in the plane home. A good, solid ghost story, with just enough tradition and just enough originality. I found its ending really quite unsettling.
