The Woman in Black
The Woman in Black: A Ghost Story | Susan Hill
The classic ghost story by Susan Hill: a chilling tale about a menacing spectre haunting a small English town. Arthur Kipps is an up-and-coming London solicitor who is sent to Crythin Gifforda faraway town in the windswept salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causewayto attend the funeral and settle the affairs of a client, Mrs. Alice Drablow of Eel Marsh House. Mrs. Drablows house stands at the end of the causeway, wreathed in fog and mystery, but Kipps is unaware of the tragic secrets that lie hidden behind its sheltered windows. The routine business trip he anticipated quickly takes a horrifying turn when he finds himself haunted by a series of mysterious sounds and imagesa rocking chair in a deserted nursery, the eerie sound of a pony and trap, a childs scream in the fog, and, most terrifying of all, a ghostly woman dressed all in black. Psychologically terrifying and deliciously eerie, The Woman in Black is a remarkable thriller of the first rate.

Book 2 finished for #MrBook1inaMillion #litsypartyofone #24B4Monday. What a creepy, chilling story. This is a detailed and atmospheric ghost story. Not to be read late at night. The story itself is interesting and definitely eerie. The ending though, oh wow was not expecting that but it was so dark. @ljuliel posted this interesting questionnaire. Thanks @MrBook for tagging me.
1: all the people, love, new book suggestions.
2: Nothing I can really think of.
3: other have also suggested this but I'd love to see an owned TBR and a not owned one.
4: generally when I finish a book and the occasional questionnaire, photo challenge.
5: Readathons and questionnaires I love
6: maybe the option to add photos to other posts. ⬇️

kezzlou85 6 continued. Adding photos like if someone posted a book and you had a different edition you wanted to show them without making a whole new post. 2w

“Whereas the bed had been made up neatly, now the clothes were pulled off anyhow and bundled up or trailing onto the floor. The wardrobe door and the drawers of the small chest were pulled open and all the clothes they contained half-dragged out, and left hanging like entrails from a wounded body.“

I can vividly remember how creeped out/ unnerved I was by this scene in particular.

This is billed as a “classic English ghost story” and I could not agree more. The pace is slow and languid, the atmosphere claustrophobic, tense and the story builds into a jaw clenching “get the heck outta there” moment. Not a thriller, but definitely a nice creepy read 3/5

Still not that big into audiobooks (I can read books in at least half the time). Still, this one was quite enjoyable. While I prefer the movie, (as it‘s my favorite ghost movie), this isn‘t as dragging and garrulous as a lot of classic ghost stories tend to be. It was quite spooky, even if the “good stuff” only came in the 2nd half. I also love the dog. I mean, his name is “Spider”. Such a great name for a dog 😂

3rd book in halfoweenathon challenge was to read a book with movie adaptation.Movie was so different. I liked this ghostly story.I enjoyed very much how it was written, Arthur Kipp character was so well described on how he struggled between his rational and irrational mind? Supernatural? It was a sad story. I felt that I was in that house feeling that ghost.Story is slow not scary but more psychological? emotional? Book was received in swap3.8⭐️

Atmospheric and quick. Wasn‘t as spooky as I was hoping but I think that‘s just because I watch so many paranormal TV shows that I don‘t spook easy. Written in a style that reads like a classic, it was easy to fall into the story. Definitely enjoyable, just lacking on the spook. #screamathon

madamereadsalot1 @olivia.ferz it's really good! I thought it was a delicious kind of spine tingle. Chills, not frights. But I read a lot of horror and most don't make me flinch. I‘m a sucker for a horror story (but incidentally not a horror film) and Susan Hill definitely makes the list of favourite authors in the genre. I have to admit, I like my horror just a bit more punchy - this book is scary, but in a creeping, nervous kind of way. There‘s really no out and out frights but as ever Susan Hill manages to create a strong sense of foreboding with her writing. One word to describe this ... eerie.

I just finished watching The Secrets of Crickley Hall and wanted more. I did look up James Herbert but my library didn‘t have his books available in ebook format. So I went to Amazon and hesitated to buy anything at the moment. One review mentioned Susan Hill‘s The Woman in Black. Luckily my library had it. It is really fulfilling that need for a spooky setting and that 1940‘s dramatic feel.

It IS scary but not in a conventional way. It only has a woman in black and the sound of a child dying. I wouldn't be that scared if not for Susan Hill's narrative. She is the queen of adjectives. She'll describe fear in 20+ words that you won't have any excuse but to feel it! I was reading this book while riding to train (never in the dark or alone!) but still I got goosebumps. That's how good Susan Hill is.

This book should be read in the daytime, with lots of sun shining in through the windows, in a house full of other people. Not like I did, in the dark, in a house with strange noises and the only other person present was a sleeping 10 year old. This was scary, atmospheric and awesome. I felt chilled to my bone, and I could see spooky women standing everywhere.
