Pumpkin Flowers
Pumpkin Flowers | Matti Friedman
This is the story of a band of young Israeli soldiers, including the author, who in the 1990s were charged with holding an outpost inside Lebanon known as the Pumpkin ('Flowers', the second part of the title, was the code used on military radio for 'casualties'). Using humour, pop culture, and even musical references, Friedman recreates the wartime experience in a narrative that is part memoir, part journalism, part military history.

So far the story is developing slowly!

A couple of quotes to give you the feel of the book:
“Sometimes you took over one of the guard posts, checked your watch an hour later, and found that 5 minutes had passed.”

“The army gave outposts pretty names like Basil, Crocus, Cypress and Red Pepper. This reflects a floral preoccupation in our military which in naming things generally avoids names like Hellfire and Apache...”

And explains the title: flowers is the army code name for wounded.

This is a memoir of the author‘s experiences as a young Israeli soldier serving at a forward outpost named “Pumpkin” in southern Lebanon in the 1990s. The stories of several other soldiers are also told, as well as the history of “The Mother‘s Movement,” which led to Israel‘s withdrawal of forces from Lebanon. The final section relates the author‘s experience visiting Lebanon years later, using his dual Canadian passport. Con‘t below:

arubabookwoman This is an excellent and moving (if occasionally brutally graphic) book, and I highly recommend it. 7y
Cinfhen I love the way Matti Friedman writes!! He did a Skype interview with our bookclub for his other book and he was so charming, insightful and honest 7y

My Mother‘s Day flowers—lilies, which I believe are a symbol of peace. Having just finished 2 books relating to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, #Pumpkinflowers (NF) and #DinnerAtTheCenterOfTheWorld (F), I have been thinking about this part of the world a lot. How I wish peace was possible.

Hope to review these soon—one a pick, one maybe not.

Cinfhen I read one and bailed on the other and since I‘m currently living in the midst of all this, I truly echo your sentiments about wishing for peace ☮️ 7y
arubabookwoman @cinfhen My daughter-in-law is Israeli. She and my son and their soon-to-be baby live in NYC, but they frequently visit her family in Israel (they just got back from a visit Sunday). So we follow the news from there pretty closely. (edited) 7y
arubabookwoman @cinfhen And now I am wondering which one you bailed on—The one I liked or the one I didn‘t. 7y
Cinfhen That‘s exciting about the new baby...Mazel Tov 😉I really liked the tagged book!!! I‘ve heard Matti speak, he‘s awesome. If you want to try another book of his I highly recommend 7y
arubabookwoman @cinfhen Thanks for the recommendation—I will look for it. So glad it was Pumpkinflowers you liked-that was the one I liked too. I finished but didn‘t care for Dinner at the Center of the Earth. 7y

Checked out 10 books from the library, several of which I‘ve put on my To Read list since joining Litsy. Way behind on reporting, books finished—hope to have some time to report tomorrow. Finished #ThePerfectStorm last night. Scarey. What to choose next?

#Aprella FACT:I‘m a crier😥so today I‘m overly emotional as Israel honors the memory of all who died either serving in the IDF or were murdered by acts of terror. In a small country EVERYONE has someone they knew who has sacrificed their lives so others can live here. Every grave has an honor guard today who memorializes the soul who gave their life. My son volunteered to stand in front of a lone solider‘s grave. The tagged memoir #KeptMeCrying

Cathythoughts Your son has a big heart ... he sounds like a beautiful young man. Great post ❤️ 7y
Cinfhen Thank you @Cathythoughts although maybe volunteered was a poor word choice 🙄he‘s entire grade is participating but yes, he‘s a great kid ❤️and I‘m very proud of him. 7y

Kaye That is a wonderful tribute, that each grave has a soldier. 7y
Soubhiville Wow, powerful images. Thank you. 7y
TrishB Wow 😢❤️ 7y
Cinfhen I agree @Kaye @Soubhiville @TrishB it‘s a beautiful tribute ~ they also restrict all television programming for 24 hours and instead they list each name of every person killed accompanied by a photo with their date of birth, country of origin and date of death. It‘s over 23,000 names 7y
Mdargusch I‘m tearing up just reading this book. I‘m so glad to learn what an amazing country is through your eyes. It sounds like a very special place. 😢💙 7y
youneverarrived Wow this is beautiful but also heartbreaking 😢 7y
emilyhaldi Beautiful! I second @Mdargusch 💙 I had no idea Israel memorialized their past in so many ways. 7y
Cinfhen Thank you so much for allowing me to share some of this country with all of you 🙏🏻 @Mdargusch @emilyhaldi @youneverarrived 7y

I saw this title on the NYTimes 100 notable books list, and I love memoirs so I decided to check it out. It is a super interesting read on a subject that I don't have knowledge about. Definitely makes me want to seek out more about the area, culture, conflict etc. from both soles of the war of course!

#readharder

Cinfhen I read it, interesting! I like the author's writing style. He wrote a different book, not about war but about a mystery/scandal involving the theft of ancient Biblical scrolls. Super fascinating 8y
BookMusings @Cinfhen thanks! I will definitely check that one out. 8y

In honor of all who serve and especially those who gave their lives..."fast and engaging… A compelling war memoir containing elements of terror, observation, boredom, and grim (at times absurd) humor. This is an excellent read…” —Library Journal, starred review
