PowerBook | Jeanette Winterson
5 posts | 16 read | 18 to read
Adding to an already astounding body of work that explores the nature of love and desire, Jeanette Winterson ("Sexing the Cherry," "Oranges are Not the Only Fruit," "The Passion") presents a stunning novel that probes the boundaries of the Internet. Ali writes stories on email for anyone who wants them. She promises freedom just for one night, but she does not do so without a warning: the story might change you. Ask for an epic love story and you will get one, but Ali will be cast in it, too, and the lines between the real and imagined may blur. Plucking characters from history and myth, Winterson journeys through time and stops in London, Paris, and Capri, all the while melding the language of love with that of computers. In The PowerBook she has found a brilliant conceit through which to showcase her increasingly bold voice."

📚: The Powerbook (tagged) Its short story about tulips remains in my mind 20 years after reading it.

🎥: Pane e tulipane (Bread & Tulips) Stunning Italian film with magical realism.

🎶: Tiny Tim‘s “Tiptoe through the Tulips” — I wish I could be more original

An interesting book but not my favourite by Winterson. Technology/e-mail is used as a way of being whoever you want - the narrator offers her customers ‘freedom just for one night‘. Written in a time when the internet was pretty new I think it‘s a case maybe not so much of #virtualinsanity but definitely a book with a glimpse into what technology could become and offer. #aprella

Reviewsbylola I was on a Winterson kick years ago but I‘ve never read this one. 6y
Sophoclessweetheart I enjoyed this one but none are as good as Written on the Body x 6y
youneverarrived @Reviewsbylola I‘ve read most of her books and it is worth a read but not her best imo. 6y

emilyhaldi And I suppose this IS what technology has become! You can be whoever you want on social media, dating websites, etc... Dangerous!! 😯 6y
youneverarrived @emilyhaldi that is true!! 6y
Cinfhen I‘m intrigued how the cover art fits into the story?!? 6y
youneverarrived @Cinfhen if I remember rightly there‘s a scene in the book about tulips and gender .. don‘t know if they are actually tulips in the background but I‘m guessing they are 🤷‍♀️ 6y

#TBRtemptation post 6! Winters on has been highly praised for her prose's beauty and elegance. And she brings it to a story considering love, sexuality, and gender. A writer offers people to be someone else through just one story--one email. The stories cross over into reality and the reader cannot escape them. And all becomes blurred in wonderment. Very high ratings! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

DrexEdit Anything by Jeanette Winterson automatically goes on my #TBR list. Thanks, Mr. Book! 😊 7y

One of the directors at my place of work sent this to me today. I believe the artist is Jorga Mendez Blake, but I don't know in which gallery the installation is showing.
