(2018) It's a picture book about a police shooting of an unarmed black man, providing a framework for talking to children about racial bias and police violence. Written by psychologists, it includes guidance for caregivers & educators facing such conversations. It's brilliant: measured, fair and sadly necessary ...

... and also banned in many school libraries for being insufficiently supportive of police.

Read #BannedBooks .

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐5 ⭐ Wow! I hate that this book must exist, but it must. A black man was shot. Exactly why or what happened is not known. It doesn‘t need to be known because this book is about how it impacts the town's kids. They see and hear things just like adults, but they need more context, more explanation on why things happen. They also want to know how to keep it from happening again. Everything about this book is spot on.

LibrarianRyan Even the information in the back is expansive, important, and necessary. For those out there trying to ban this book because it might make white children feel inferior or sad for history and current society, too bad. Because the black, brown, and other children feel worse as it is their people, they see these bad things happening to. This book is a very important resource that should be in all libraries and schools. We need to learn from 2y
LibrarianRyan history to make a better society, for if we don‘t we will repeat it. #bbrc #bannedbook 2y

This picture book about a police shooting is intended to teach kids ages 4-8 about racial bias. It‘s written by a psychologist and has extremely extensive parent/teacher resources at the end to guide discussion. It has topped banned and challenged book lists several years due to fears that it will lead children to mistrust police. #BBRCPictureBookLetterS @LibrarianRyan

LibrarianRyan I just got this one in from ILL. I have checked it out a few times, but have not been able to bring myself to read them yet. 2y
IndoorDame @LibrarianRyan it has really smart modern artwork! The writing sounded at times to me a little too much like it was written by a white child psychologist, but I definitely thought it was well done, and a resource people need. 2y

Continuing my Countdown to Banned Books Week by reading any of Top 10 Challenged Books of 2021, I haven't read. I found it a straight forward and honest discussion.

Time to bring this back out, again. It feels as if the “law” is seeing how far it can go and still be called the law.

#FallFinds Day 7: This Picturebook deals with the sensitive topic of unnecessary violence of the police #force conveyed with children in mind. Rather than exercise outright avoidance, there are ways of navigating around the issue that can be honest and also hopeful, which I believe is what this book intends. There is also a very extensive and highly detailed Note to Parents and Caregivers. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-mzk

Something Happened in Our Town is a fantastic book if you're looking for a way to discuss what is happening in the US right now. It comes equipped with a helpful note to parents located at the back of the book, which I recommend reading prior so you're prepared to answer your littles questions. This book is geared towards 4-8 year olds. 💕📚

Written by a psychologist to address systemic racism, police bias, and the police killing of an unarmed black man, this is a really well done children‘s book on a difficult topic.
