Scoop
Scoop | Evelyn Waugh
Lord Copper, newspaper magnate and proprietor of the Daily Beast, has always prided himself on his intuitive flair for spotting ace reporters. That is not to say he has not made the odd blunder, however, and may in a moment of weakness make another. Acting on a dinner party tip from Mrs. Algernon Stitch, Lord Copper feels convinced that he has hit on just the chap to cover a promising war in the African Republic of Ishmaelia. So begins Scoop, Waugh's exuberant comedy of mistaken identity and brilliantly irreverent satire of the hectic pursuit of hot news.

Scoop by Evelyn Waugh absolutely captures how useless the English are when they are abroad. How do they get away with it?

I loved this author for his unique humour and dry style..

Supposedly one of the preeminent works on journalism & the newspaper industry. I wanted to like it, I feel guilty that I didn't. Couldn't stay engaged, the prose itself was hard to follow. I always feel like there's something wrong with my tastes when a highly acclaimed book just falls flat with me.

First finish of 2021, read for my book club, and crossing off a Free Space on my #BookSpinBingo card ☺️

Scoop shows its age in its attitudes toward race, and it does very much jar on that account. That said, it reflects the attitudes of the time, and thankfully and rightly, times have changed.

The underlying story, a satirical comedy of errors set in the world of journalism, specifically Foreign Correspondents, however, is humorous (cont)

TheEllieMo ...and seeing the way some of our modern journalists are behaving, in some ways it feels quite relevant 🙄 3y

1. The tagged book and The Twelve Strange Days of Christmas.

2. A Christmas in Disguise by Katie Fforde.

3. 52 books, though I shall probably read more - just don‘t want to make reading a “chore”!

It‘s kind of funny, really, to read a book about journalists and newspapers written before the News Of The World scandal. Scoop reads like a time capsule of the by-gone “heyday” of newspaper journalism. I admire Waugh‘s incredible foresight in his premise and plot, but it wasn‘t mind-blowing reading. It really evoked The Thirty-Nine Steps for me... Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/scoop-evelyn-waugh/ #ClassicBooks #Journalism

I have been meaning to visit this branch ever since I first noticed it. They had Waugh's "Scoop" in their collection, providing the motivation to finally visit. A cozy location.

Absolute classic - from the moment we learn that William Boot‘s sister has tampered with the manuscript of his article, a series of misadventures and misunderstandings land William in a war zone. It‘s a masterclass in the art of crisp concise writing.

Another copy of a book that i was sure i had, in fact this is the copy i owned, aargh. Anyway a bit tenuous but this is a great satire about the race to find news for the daily 'ISSUES' of newspapers 😀

saresmoore I like your interpretation! 7y
andrew61 @saresmoore thanks, i however think I'm stretching things a bit. 7y
quirkyreader I love this Penguin cover. The ones I had from my father's university days were the classics with the brown and yellow covers. 7y
jenniferw88 Sorry, only just seen this (that's what comes of having 328 notifications lol 😂) - you weren't stretching it at all! Great choice! 7y
