Finalist for the 2010 National Book Award in Fiction Winner of the 2011 ABA Indies Choice Honor Award in Fiction Winner of the 2011 Anisfield-Wolf Award Shortlisted for the 2011 Orange Prize in Fiction A powerful, soaring novel about a stolen desk that contains the secrets, and becomes the obsession, of the lives it passes through. For twenty-five years, a reclusive American novelist has been writing at the desk she inherited from a young Chilean poet who disappeared at the hands of Pinochets secret police; one day a girl claiming to be the poets daughter arrives to take it away, sending the writers life reeling. Across the ocean, in the leafy suburbs of London, a man caring for his dying wife discovers, among her papers, a lock of hair that unravels a terrible secret. In Jerusalem, an antiques dealer slowly reassembles his fathers study, plundered by the Nazis in Budapest in 1944. Connecting these stories is a desk of many drawers that exerts a power over those who possess it or have given it away. As the narrators of Great House make their confessions, the desk takes on more and more meaning, and comes finally to stand for all that has been taken from them, and all that binds them to what has disappeared. Great House is a story haunted by questions: What do we pass on to our children and how do they absorb our dreams and losses? How do we respond to disappearance, destruction, and change? Nicole Krauss has written a soaring, powerful novel about memory struggling to create a meaningful permanence in the face of inevitable loss. "This is a novel about the long journey of a magnificent desk as it travels through the twentieth century from one owner to the next. It is also a novel about love, exile, the defilements of war, and the restorative power of language."National Book Award citation

Very good. Really kept going, no dull bits!
The stories all wove between each other and still stood alone.

I don‘t reread books so unless it‘s a special gift I donate them when I‘m done. So yes, all of these are TBR. I just ordered some books for my. #cupidgoespostal match and 2 for me. I am all out of space. I MUST be put on a book buying ban. And yes, these are in alphabetical order by author. I‘m one of those people.

Book_in_hands I don't reread books either(I just can't)so on our bookshelves it's mostly my husband's books(he rereads books all the time). I give books to my family members and also trade in at the used bookstore. (edited) 7y
RebelReader @Book_in_hands @Chelsibeau I say I don't re-read, but I will sometimes for one of my book groups and only if I liked the book. Funny thing is I always enjoy it. 😍 7y
Cortg Yes! The books I own are pretty much all TBR books. I do have a bookshelf in the guest room to stock Little Free Libraries and for guests to take. 7y
Clwojick I‘m the same! People always shake their head at me when I say I donate or pass on 99% of all my books after I‘ve read them. I keep one author, because I do actually reread Ellen Hopkins... and a keep a small collection of vintage classics. The rest are out the door as soon as possible (so I can bring more books in 😉) 7y

Lighter reading material this month due to a move, but audiobooks (all the Louise Penny and Simon Brett novels) made packing, unpacking, painting and cleaning far more bearable! Must get back to more substantial reading in July.

#june2017 #junereads #junebooks #junewrapup #bestofjune

readinginthedark Agreed! I was all about the audiobooks while moving! 7y
cathysaid @readinginthedark Hope you're done now! Finally out of boxes here. Whew! 7y
readinginthedark @cathysaid Well, we finally got everything moved, but I haven't unpacked anything except some clothes, food, my reading journal, and my computer! 😆Probably start tomorrow; I just needed a couple of days off, you know. 7y

One of the best I've read this year. A cast of characters are connected throughout the decades by possession of an antique desk. Krauss describes her characters in such poignant ways, detailing their thoughts, hopes and struggles, that you immediately connect and invest in each one. Recommended 👍

Cathythoughts Sounds good 👌 7y
Moray_Reads I love her writing 7y
cathysaid @Cathythoughts It is! Her other book is good as well. 7y
cathysaid @Moray_Reads So good! It's hard to describe the way she sketches the internal landscapes of the characters, but I try! 7y

ErikasMindfulShelf How is it? I've had that book on my shelf since it came out. I started it once, but didn't get very far. I loved 8y
LeslieO @irre Honestly I've been neglecting it and I think I've lost the thread. It's good and I'm not doing it justice. I loved History of Love also. (edited) 8y

Just thought I'd share this for any Tri-State area Littens who might be interested: Nicole Krauss and Matti Friedman are speaking and signing books this Thursday evening, in NYC! I've heard Matti speak before, he's engaging, charming, witty, honest, funny and fascinating! And I'm sure Nicole Krauss is brilliant 💕💕Flyer says FREE for students with valid ID.

Happy #bookishbirthday to Nicole Krauss! I have to confess, she's one of the contemporary authors I find myself missing out on - perpetually on my TBR. But one of the fun things about doing BBDs is it reminds me where the gaps are!

JenP The History of Love is so good! 8y
KarenUK History of love is a favorite of mine..... So good 8y
