Capital: A Novel
Capital: A Novel | John Lanchester
20 posts | 22 read | 18 to read
One of the most talked about books of the year, Capital is a sweeping social novel by the writer hailed on the cover of the New York Times Book Review as a brainy, pleasure-loving polymath. Celebrated novelist John Lanchester (author of The Debt to Pleasure) returns with an epic novel that captures the obsessions of our time. Its 2008 and things are falling apart: Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers are going under, and the residents of Pepys Road, Londona banker and his shopaholic wife, an old woman dying of a brain tumor and her graffiti-artist grandson, Pakistani shop owners and a shadowy refugee who works as the meter maid, the young soccer star from Senegal and his minderare receiving anonymous postcards reading We Want What You Have. Who is behind it? What do they want? Epic in scope yet intimate, capturing the ordinary dramas of very different lives, this is a novel of love and suspicion, of financial collapse and terrorist threat, of property values going up and fortunes going down, and of a city at a moment of extraordinary tension.

So remember AGES ago when I said I was going to focus on books in #TheVault? That‘s what I call my Kindles because many times the books are “outta sight, outta mind.” Yeah, that didn‘t happen. In addition to those, I‘m making a concerted effort to tackle books that have actually been staring me in the face for years too. This is one of those books. It‘s a CHONKSTER. Over 500 pages and the font was like 8 point. My bleeding eyes. 👇🏼👇🏼

MicheleinPhilly Anywho…the synopsis for this is a bit misleading as it reads as though there is a mystery at the heart of it but it‘s really of no consequence. This is actually a sprawling “autopsy” if you will, of a particular London road and its inhabitants in 2008. I got a bit of a Casual Vacancy vibe from it. Perhaps a smidge too long but thoroughly enjoyable. 👍🏼 1y
rockpools I think I might have this in my vaults (if it was on my shelves with 8 point type, it‘d never get read, I‘m afraid!) You‘ve made me want to actually read it! 1y
MicheleinPhilly @rockpools My reading glasses got a good workout. I seriously don‘t understand the point of these microscopic font sizes! 👵🏼 But yes, I recommend it. 1y

rockpools @MicheleinPhilly Even with reading glasses, I object as a matter of principle, so much respect to you for getting through it. But I do have it on kindle, so 🎉 1y
BarbaraBB I still have this on my shelves as well 1y
Suet624 I‘m currently doing that thing that I find myself doing every year, despite saying I won‘t. I decide to read every book in all of the five libraries I frequent instead of reading the books on my shelves. I‘m a little bit disgusted with myself. Congrats on getting through at least one of yours. 1y

These three books are birthday presents for two of my friends. One of them is in love with London and as I loved Capital, I thought it could be the perfect present for her. The second friend loves sci-fi, but has never read anything by Philip K. Dick, while Martian Time-Slip is one of the few sci-fi books I've ever read. Introductory Lectures on Psycho-Analysis changed my life and after I told him about the general idea of the book he got intrigued

Well, that could have been around 200 pages shorter. The different story lines weren‘t evenly balanced and sometimes picked up again at weird intervals.

Sarah83 Feeling better? 6y
Maike @Sarah83 yes, a little. A weekend full of sleep and tea helped 😉 6y

This novel contains the best letter ever written by a wife leaving her husband. I won't spoil it for you, but those who've read the book know who I'm talking about! #Bitch day 9 #Rocktober

BarbaraBB I‘ve got the book on my tbr. Is it good? 7y
Abailliekaras @BarbaraBB yes I really liked it. The writing is not exquisite (if you come to it after, say, Virginia Woolf) but once you're into it it's fun & well-observed. I gave it 4 stars. 7y
BarbaraBB Sounds good. I read a good review in a newspaper but then never met anyone who had actually read it. I thought it might be pretty difficult but am glad to hear it‘s not! 7y

Not my biggest #bigbooks but from my shelves in Hong Kong, these are 5 that I really enjoyed. Layered, immersive, strong intelligent writing, and in the case of Peggy Guggenheim, a fascinating life! #riotgrams

I am so far removed from a capital city right now this book seems like a dream. I did enjoy the intersecting stories set in London. Right now I'm in Moree. Remote NSW in Australia.

My boyfriend and I are moving in together, and our books are the first things that found their way into our new apartment 😄they're not that many, right? 😉

Ole No, is that all? 😁 7y
Maike @Ole yes, but my boyfriend (yet 😁) isn't that much of a reader, so only about 5 of them are his books, and I read a lot on my kindle 😇 7y
Ole It is still a nice pile 👍 7y

Sarah83 Aber ist doch super, dass zuerst die Bücher einziehen. 😎 7y
erinreads Books are a pain to move! My husband and I have added two bookshelves and more than enough books to fit on them in the 6 years we've been living in our apartment, so I told him we're definitely hiring movers when we move. 7y
quirkyreader Look at it this way, you are off to a good start. 🐸🐙 7y
Soubhiville That's barely any books at all 😜. I recommend a bookstore immediately! 7y
ReadingEnvy If he isn't running away you have a keeper 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That is impressive! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa And you are very trusting to move your books first...😉 7y
Tav That's not so many books. A manageable and reasonable collection. 7y
Gissy Because once upon a time they met..and they lived around books for ever after!!! 7y
LauraBrook That's it? You need to go book shopping! 😉 7y
Maike @Sarah83 nur schade, dass ich jetzt noch eine Woche lang ohne meine Bücher in der alten Wohnung ausharren muss ? 7y
Maike @erinreads @Tav I'm glad they're not yet that many. Let's hope we can afford movers once the collection grows 😄 7y
Maike @Soubhiville @LauraBrook definitely! 😄 @ReadingEnvy oh yes he is ❤️ @Gissy that sounds pretty wonderful 😊 7y
Sarah83 Wie willst du das denn schaffen? 😂 7y
Maike @Sarah83 ich bin bewaffnet: Hörbücher auf dem iPod und ungefähr 50 ebooks auf dem kindle ?? 7y
Sarah83 Gut, dann sollte man eine Woche überleben. 😎 7y

This is my pick for #Recommendsday! I loved this novel, which follows the lives of various people living and working in one London neighborhood.

Such a page turner about the lives of the residents on a typical middle class street in London and how their lives, although so disconnected, are also so interlinked. The characters are ordinary people yet so different from each other which means you can relate to their individual stories so easily!

aliax97 Great book! And great review! 8y
