Soon to be a PBS Masterpiece series starring Samantha Bond (Downton Abbey) and Francesca Annis (Cranford) Away from the frontlines of World War II, in towns and villages across Great Britain, ordinary women were playing a vital role in their country's war effort. As members of the Women's Institute, an organization with a presence in a third of Britain's villages, they ran canteens and knitted garments for troops, collected tons of rosehips and other herbs to replace medicines that couldn't be imported, and advised the government on issues ranging from evacuee housing to children's health to postwar reconstruction. But they are best known for making jam: from produce they grew on every available scrap of land, they produced twelve million pounds of jam and preserves to feed a hungry nation. Home Fires, Julie Summers's fascinating social history of the Women's Institute during the war (when its members included the future Queen Elizabeth II along with her mother and grandmother), provides the remarkable and inspiring true story behind the upcoming PBS Masterpiece series that will be sure to delight fans of Call the Midwife and Foyle's War. Through archival material and interviews with current and former Women's Institute members, Home Fires gives us an intimate look at life on the home front during World War II.

I kept getting confused about whether I owned Jambusters or the tagged book, Home Fires…. It‘s Home Fires, so that‘s what my #bookspin is. Glad I got that straightened out!

Pickpick

I picked this up because I enjoyed the PBS series and expected it to be historical fiction. It‘s not. It‘s nonfiction about the activities of the Women‘s Institute in Britain during WWII. Not something I would have thought interesting, but I was wrong. It was fascinating social history and I recommend it.

jlhammar Loved that PBS series! 2y

Am I hopelessly adolescent to find his name amusing? (Yes, I know it‘s spelled differently.)

Pity the five year olds learning their addresses who had to write this village name!

Soubhiville 😲😬 2y
DivineDiana Now that‘s a mouthful! 😲 2y
Lcsmcat @DivineDiana @Pageturner1 @Soubhiville A few pages later she refers to the village as Llanfair, so I guess it wasn‘t always spelled out. 2y

My grandmother pasted this pattern for "Service Socks" into the front of one of her cookbooks during WW2. She taught me how to knit but said she knit so many socks for the war effort while my grandfather was stationed in Europe that she would NEVER knit another pair again. Here's to those who kept the home fires burning.

drokka I love that these sorts of things are making their way back out into the world. It's quite amazing all the things everyone did toward the war effort. 7y

For anyone stunned by the cliffhanger ending of season two, you might find this article very interesting. A few details were given away about certain characters and maybe hope for another season.

Suzze This season is running here right now. I don't dare read the article! 😳 7y
EvieBee @Suzze Don't! I couldn't wait for PBS so I ordered my copies from Netflix. I've waited a year for this. 7y
Suzze @EvieBee84 I just emailed myself the link so I can read it after the season ends. 😁 7y

I'm probably the only person still doing Netflix through mail, BUT! So excited for season two of Home Fires. So sad it wasn't picked up for a third season. Anyone else watching?

LeahBergen I'm DVRing the 2nd season right now! I liked the 1st season. ❤️ 7y
EvieBee @LeahBergen Yay! Can't wait. I saw it was finally available last Tuesday and almost fainted. It's been too long! 7y
Zelma If we still did Netflix, it would be mail. Our internet is so slow, we can't stream anything. 7y

EvieBee @Zelma Same here! It's very finicky. What motivated me to go back to mail was their selection of BBC dramas. (edited) 7y
LeahBergen I'm just finishing the second season of Indian Summers. Have you watched it? 7y
RowReads1 We do both. mail and stream. 7y
EvieBee @LeahBergen I haven't! I didn't catch it on PBS at the beginning and haven't revisited it. Is it good? If so, I'll add it to my queue. 7y
EvieBee @RowReads1 Awesome! Do you like the variety the mail offers? 7y
LeahBergen @EvieBee84 I like it but I like that "British in India between the wars" era. ? 7y
rubyslippersreads I haven't watched this (though it sounds like something I'd like), but did you fans know that several books will be coming out in July to complete the series? 7y
RowReads1 @EvieBee84 yeah. We watch a lot of foreign films and tv. 7y
rabbitprincess OMG I read Home Fires as Homefries. I must be hungry 😂 7y
EvieBee @LeahBergen Me too! Still haven't gotten to the Jewel in the Crown series though (books). 7y
EvieBee @rubyslippersreads I didn't! Thank you for sharing. I just went and added them to my book depository wish list. Can't wait! 7y
EvieBee @rabbitprincess Haha! That was actually a good movie with Drew Barrymore that did make me hungry. 7y
MicheleinPhilly ? I didn't even know they still did DVDs in the mail! My tastes have gotten so finicky though that I probably couldn't rely on my queue. I used to have a lot of "I'm not in the mood for this" moments when I did the DVDs. It's only gotten worse. 7y
EvieBee @MicheleinPhilly I know what you mean! I'm the same way with reading. Lol! (edited) 7y
MicheleinPhilly Exactly. Which is why I can never stick with reading challenges or TBR lists. I'm a Scorpio! I can't commit! 7y
Ashley31 I love this show!!!! I'm so pissed there's not going to be a third season. I'm watching on PBS every Sunday. 7y
EvieBee @Ashley31 Me too! @rubyslippersreads said that there are two sequel books out for publication that continues the story. I'll definitely be checking those out. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk My wife loves it! And I still get discs too. 7y
EvieBee @TobeyTheScavengerMonk So glad it's no just me! 7y
