Skeleton Man
Skeleton Man | Tony Hillerman
7 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
Hailed as "a wonderful storyteller" by the New York Times, and a "national and literary cultural sensation" by the Los Angeles Times, bestselling author Tony Hillerman is back with another blockbuster novel featuring the legendary Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Sergeant Jim Chee.Former Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn comes out of retirement to help investigate what seems to be a trading post robbery. A simple-minded kid nailed for the crime is the cousin of an old colleague of Sergeant Jim Chee. He needs help and Chee, and his fiance Bernie Manuelito, decide to provide it.Proving the kid's innocence requires finding the remains of one of 172 people whose bodies were scattered among the cliffs of the Grand Canyon in an epic airline disaster 50 years in the past. That passenger had handcuffed to his wrist an attach case filled with a fortune in--one of which seems to have turned up in the robbery. But with Hillerman, it can't be that simple. The daughter of the long-dead diamond dealer is also seeking his body. So is a most unpleasant fellow willing to kill to make sure she doesn't succeed. These two tense tales collide deep in the canyon at the place where an old man died trying to build a cult reviving reverence for the Hopi guardian of the Underworld. It's a race to the finish in a thunderous monsoon storm to see who will survive, who will be brought to justice, and who will finally unearth the Skeleton Man.

Book 17 of the Leaphorn & Chee series and Hillerman has long ago found his stride. I really love the characters in this series, and the pacing for this mystery was excellent. I didn't realize it, but I only have one more book written by Tony before the series is taken over by his daughter. I'm interested to see what she does with these characters. I've had mixed results with the next generation inheriting an ongoing series, so we'll see!!

TheSpineView Great job! Hope you enjoy the rest if the series! 1y
Clwojick Great job! ❤️❤️ 1y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 I still need to read this author. 1y

#WeeklyForecast a little late since I was busy yesterday being lazy and playing video games 😂 I actually already bailed on Save the Date when I found out how part of it was going to end. Frederica is my #LMPBC book this month so it is high priority this week. I am hoping to read the next three Leaphorn and Chee books for the #BacklistReadathon although after I got them from the library I realized that this is where we switch to Tony's daughter ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) so the third one isn't technically Hillerman backlist. However, I'm sticking with it because the books are already here!! Overall would like to read 7 books for the #JoyousJanuary readathon - the four mentioned, Bambi for the #ChildrensClassicRead, Not That Kind of Guy for the #TBRbyColor challenge (January is pink), and hidden behind Bambi is the next book in the historical mystery series I'm reading with my sister, Murder ⬇ 1y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) at the Piccadilly Playhouse. I should be home a lot this week, but have TONS of projects I am trying to check off, plus a new addictive video game for the evenings, so we'll see how far I get!!

Clwojick Oooo. What video game are you playing? 1y

TheAromaofBooks @Clwojick - Wytchwood... you literally run around collecting things to craft them into things and take them to people who want other things 😂 It is not for everyone, but I kind of love resource games so I'm into it. Puts my husband right to sleep if he tries to watch, though! 😆 1y
Cinfhen That video game actually appeals to me 🥰Carry on 😘😘 1y
Andrew65 Have a great week. 😁 1y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - It's so right up my alley!! Even though there are critters that will attack you, if your character loses all her hearts, she just goes back to cottage. The whole game is SO low-stress for me that I can't stop playing 😂 1y
Cinfhen It sounds perfect!!! Im glad you‘re enjoying this stress-less game! And who doesn‘t love critters 1y

Oh look, somehow I'm hosting another reading challenge! 😂 Feel free to join @Clwojick and me for a monthly, week-long #BacklistReadathon !!! The idea is that each month you pick an author whose backlist you've been meaning to read, and focus on their books for a week!! For me, this is definitely going to tie-in to my #SeriesLove2023 goals, but you could also focus on a specific author's standalones as well.

I'm hoping to get through the next ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) three books in Tony Hillerman's Leaphorn & Chee mystery series - I'm ready to read the tagged book, which is no. 17!!

Let us know which author you'll be focusing on for the week - looking forward to reading with all of you as usual!! 😁

Kimberlone What a great challenge idea! I will try to join in but I probably won‘t be consistent for the whole year 1y
TheAromaofBooks @Kimberlone - This is a great readathon to bounce in and out of as it fits your reading schedule!! 1y
Kimberlone @TheAromaofBooks yep and I will probably combine with BookSpin to double up! 1y
Laughterhp This sounds like so much fun! I‘m hopefully in. 1y
Clare-Dragonfly Did you steal this idea from my reading goals/#bookspin for the year? 😂😂😂 1y
julieclair Great idea! I'm in! Like you, for most months, I will probably tie this in with my #SeriesLove2023 goals. 👍 1y
CSeydel Oh! I think I spent 2022 doing this, but I didn‘t know it had a name 😂 I‘m in!! 1y
CSeydel Ok but dumb question because I‘m not super knowledgeable about publishing - how old does a book have to be to be considered “backlist”? And does the author have to be still actively publishing? I was thinking about reading an installment of Wheel of Time, would that count? 1y
TheAromaofBooks @CSeydel - for this challenge, we're considering “backlist“ to be anything a specific author has written that you haven't read yet, regardless of when it was published or whether the author is still writing. For instance, one month I will probably do Naomi Novik because I really want to read the Scholomance trilogy, even though the final book was just published in 2022. 1y
CSeydel @TheAromaofBooks awesome!! Ok another dumb question: what is #serieslove2023? I swear, I need a glossary of hashtags. I tried scrolling back through the tagged posts but … I gave up 1y
TheAromaofBooks @CSeydel - haha this is why I ended up creating a book challenge notebook, just to keep track of this stuff! 😂 #SeriesLove2023 is hosted by @TheSpineView and @Andrew65 and is a loose challenge where you just read books that are part of a series that you've been meaning to read!! You set your own goals within those parameters, and tag them when you read a book from a series!! 1y
Andrew65 @CSeydel Be great to have you with us on #SeriesLove2023. Two ways of playing along, either just post any books you read in a series with the tag, or as many people have done choose a few series you want to target in the year, post these and then tag us when you have read any books in the series. It is a very relaxed, fun and informal challenge. 1y
CSeydel @Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks Thanks! Excellent, I will definitely be participating. I have 2 or 3 series that I plan to read more of in 2023 1y
Andrew65 @CSeydel That‘s great, look forward to seeing your progress. 1y
Morr_Books @TheAromaofBooks I have some authors in mind but unfortunately won't be able to start this until next month. Looking forward to it though! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @Morr_Books - This is definitely a challenge you can jump whichever months work best for you!! 1y

“As Leaphorn remembered it, the August day he‘d been pulled into the Skeleton Man affair had been a total downer moodwise.”

Hillerman captures a great mystery but I believe it to be too much for a Pre K-3rd grade classroom.
