Girls Will Be Girls
Girls Will Be Girls: Dressing Up, Playing Parts and Daring to Act Differently | Emer O'Toole
12 posts | 7 read | 33 to read
Being a woman is, largely, about performance - how we dress and modify our bodies, what we say, the roles we play, and how we conform to expectations. Gender stereotypes are still deeply embedded in our society, but Emer O'Toole is on a mission to re-write the old script and bend the rules of gender - and she shows how and why we should all be joining in. Exploring what it means to 'act like a girl', Emer takes us on a hilarious and thought-provoking journey through her life (including singing 'Get Your Pits Out for the Lads' on national TV after growing out her body hair). Cross-dressing, booty-shaking, sexual disasters, family dinners and full-body waxing are all lovingly dissected in search of wisdom. With game-changing ideas, academic intelligence and laugh-out-loud humour, this book will open your mind and revolutionise the way that you think about gender.

I bought this card because the three year old in question and I share a love of cats and there is a large one on the front. However, I had to doctor the inside. Now. - what books do I get to accompany? She has all the usual suspects, so something new or off the beaten path would be awesome. :)

TheKidUpstairs Does she have any of Andrea Beaty's books? Our fave is 6y

This book is absolutely wonderful! It was informative without being preachy, and I loved O‘Toole‘s personal stories. This book looks at gender and gender identity as something we perform, based on different structures and our own feeling of agency. O‘Toole writes with humour, but it never feels like this subject isn‘t serious. A great read overall, and one I‘ll be coming back to!

TrishB Stacked 👍🏻 sounds good. 6y
batsy Sounds great! 6y
JoScho Love this cover ❤️ 6y
Kalalalatja @TrishB @batsy I really don‘t do it justice with my review. It was a refreshing read compared to other books on feminism and gender, which I really appreciated! @JoScho the yellow really pops! 6y

Finally back in the mood for audiobooks after taking a long break for physical books only! So far I'm finding this well-written and insightful, and the narrator has this really lovely Irish accent. #currentlyreading

A great read. There was a lot here that I was already familiar with but O'Toole is engaging, fun, serious, informed and accepting. She covers a lot of ground, exploring her personal battles and experiences and engaging with theory. Her message is strong - think about, engage critically with, create and live the gender identity truest to you and, most importantly, show others to do the same

saresmoore I love this review! I'm persuaded. 7y

Not too bad for my August book purchases. I am not even going to touch my August library haul, however, because there isn't a picture big enough. I apparently have zero will power when it comes to free (aka library) books. #augustbookhaul

If I could quote this whole book I would, but I would be here for days! This book made me angry, made me laugh and, at times, forced me to stop and have a hard think. Most importantly it's made me feel passionately about feminism. Full of funny anecdotes, I want everyone to read this book!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

There are, of course, still people out there who think that the reproductive function of women's bodies should exclude them from the public sphere. The technical term for these people is gobshites.
