The Girl in the Flammable Skirt
The Girl in the Flammable Skirt: Stories | Aimee Bender
A grief-stricken librarian decides to have sex with every man who enters her library. A half-mad, unbearably beautiful heiress follows a strange man home, seeking total sexual abandon: He only wants to watch game shows. A woman falls in love with a hunchback; when his deformity turns out to be a prosthesis, she leaves him. A wife whose husband has just returned from the war struggles with the heartrending question: Can she still love a man who has no lips?Aimee Bender's stories portray a world twisted on its axis, a place of unconvention that resembles nothing so much as real life, in all its grotesque, beautiful glory. From the first line of each tale she lets us know she is telling a story, but the moral is never quite what we expect. Bender's prose is glorious: musical and colloquial, inimitable and heartrending. Here are stories of men and women whose lives are shaped--and sometimes twisted--by the power of extraordinary desires, erotic and otherwise. The Girl in the Flammable Skirt is the debut of a major American writer.BONUS MATERIAL: This edition includes an excerpt from Aimee Bender's The Color Master.

Dark, off-kilter short stories full of magical realism that did nothing for me. Full review at http://booknaround.blogspot.com/2021/12/review-girl-in-flammable-skirt-by-aimee....

merelybookish I do like Aimee Bender. But 💯 can imagine why someone wouldn't. 2y

Mehso-so

I usually really like Aimee Bender, but this collection wasn‘t my favorite. I think there were too many stories and I wanted fewer stories with more development. Not bad, but I didn‘t love any of he short stories like I‘ve loved her other work.

GingerAntics @jdiehr maybe we could get it as a quilt, or a duvet, or a phone case, or pillow or something. Car interior might be a bit much, but it would make a statement. 😂 6y
Samplergal @GingerAntics I‘m sure there is fabric out there that would be available. I‘m a quilter, so look at fabric.com. They have a lot of fabric. Otherwise cut up the skirt! 6y
GingerAntics Now that‘s thinking!!! 6y

Anyone signed up for season of stories through penguin random house? Every few months I get a short story divided over 4 days in my email... the stories have been great and stuff is never read otherwise. Highly recommend!

Lmstraubie I hadn't heard about it. I will need to check it out! 7y
Redjewel_7734 I love it!!! I signed up last year, so when it came around this year I was already on the list! 7y

Want more #bluebooks? I got 'em. With so many shades of blue, I decided to clump them. Here is a version of brightish middle blues...
These photos make me want to #shelvebycolor...

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Shelving by colour is quite fun (unless you forget what colour the spine is - then it's painful) 7y

I'm not sure where I read about this book but I decided I needed to read it (even though I generally avoid short story collections). It's an odd collection, strangely compelling with some truely great opening lines... but it's also pretty random...

PoetKoala This book sounds delightfully bonkers. 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, he turns into a salamander and she releases him into the ocean... 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @PoetKoala, it's a short story collection and bonkers is a very good one word review of it! 7y

When I first read Aimee Bender, I had devour all her work as soon as possible. She writes the best whimsical--and sometimes disturbing--short stories. Definitely a must-read if you like #magicalrealism. Gah! Just looking at my shelves tells me I'm overdue for a reread! #magicalmonday #magicalshortstory

Suet624 Aimee is a lot of fun. 7y
