The Collected Poems of Sara Teasdale
The Collected Poems of Sara Teasdale: (Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, Helen of Troy and Other Poems, Rivers to the Sea, Love Songs, and Flame and Shadow) | Sara Teasdale
46 posts | 5 read | 9 to read
Sara Teasdale (1883-1924) became one of the most praised lyric poets of the early twentieth century. In "The Collected Poems," five of Teasdale's books of poems are brought together, demonstrating her varied output. Teasdale examines love, loss, and death, all with a beautiful lyricism. Her poems range from the traditional to the experimental as she locates and transforms her poetic voice. Born and raised in St. Louis, Teasdale had fragile health until early adulthood. Upon publishing her first book of poems "Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems" (included in this edition), Teasdale experienced critical and commercial success. She moved to New York City in 1916 where she situated herself with the literary and intellectual communities of the day. Her poetic output continued with regularity though Teasdale experienced bouts of depression with increasing frequency. She would later commit suicide at the age of 49.

I enjoyed these poems and Sara Teasdale‘s style. The introduction mentioned that it was a bit old-fashioned for the early 20th century, but I quite enjoyed it for whatever time it was in. Definitely an overall melancholy tone and a lot of repeated themes. She really loved the month of April, the star Arcturus, and Sappho. I liked 48 of the poems. Pictured is one of them.

Finished my current slow poetry read this morning. Spending the last 5 weeks with these 200 pages was like coming home. This made me cry, but it‘s is one of those volumes I‘ll be rereading all my life. #MarvellousMarch @Andrew65

Leftcoastzen Lovely! I have read some of her poems , maybe I‘ll try more! 2y

dabbe And this poem beget “There Will Come Soft Rains“ by Ray Bradbury, a science fiction short story I loved reading with my sophomores. ❣️ 2y
IndoorDame @dabbe I love how many writers and musicians she influenced! 2y

dabbe @IndoorDame Agreed! And the story follows the same premise: an apocalyptic war has just occurred, and only the appliances are “alive.“ The world just does its thing like it always does. I sometimes wish environmentalists wouldn't keep saying we have to “save the planet.“ The planet will continue on for a long time; it's US who need saving! 😊 2y
IndoorDame @dabbe haha, so true!!! I‘ll have to find a copy of the story. I haven‘t read Bradbury in years but he was a favorite when I was a teenager 2y

Aimeesue Weird. I grew up in the Berkshires and have never seen this poem. You'd think an English teacher would have made us read it somewhere along the way. 😄 (edited) 2y
IndoorDame @Aimeesue like too many of her female contemporaries, she was popular during her lifetime and then relegated to the background by male critics who shaped the 20th century canon 2y
dabbe @IndoorDame 👻 to the male critics! 🤣 2y

IndoorDame I‘m in the middle of this book right now. It‘s incredible! It‘s a slow read to take it all in the way it deserves, so it may be my month long poetry book this month but what a perfect February companion 2y

With a windchill of -10 🥶💨 I‘m resolved to ignore everything I ought to be doing and stay in my blanket nest. I easily have enough books here to last until spring, so the necessities are covered.

I can‘t say I usually get too excited about bookplates, but I just noticed the one in my current used volume of poetry for the first time and it‘s so epic! It‘s really giving me a sense of the personality of the previous owner.

KathyWheeler That is absolutely beautiful! 2y

This poem has some of the most beautiful lines I‘ve ever read. “You are my deepening skies, / Give me your stars to hold.” Thought it was appropriate for the #peace prompt. #quotsy #quotsydec17

"I may not sorrow for I saw the light,
Tho' I shall walk in valley ways for long,
I still shall hear the echo of the song,-
My life is measured by its one great height.
Joy holds more grace than pain can ever give,
And by my glimpse of joy my soul shall live.
