Daughter of a Greenlander mother and a wealthy Dane, Smilla is a most unusual character. In Denmark, alone, she befriends a lonely boy Isaiah. A huge stuttering man, the Mechanic, becomes her lover. Isaiah, afraid of heights, dies falling from an apartment building leaving only his footprints in the snow: Smilla‘s remarkable sense of snow tells her this was murder. This brick of a novel follows her attempt in painstaking detail with help from ⬇️

Texreader the Mechanic and a Danish company‘s accounting expert to prove it was murder. Her search takes her back to two mysterious trips to a remote island off #Greenland in the 1960s and 1990s, the death of Isaiah‘s father on one of those trips, and a new trek to the island. Smilla becomes a stewardess on the new ship crew and she takes every risk imaginable, with muñtiple attempts on her life, to discover what these people are seeking in Greenland. ⬇️ 13h
Texreader Smilla‘s remarkable sense of snow, and ice, helps resolve the mystery. The vague ending left readers upset, but I felt the conclusion was final. I struggled with all the tiny details, and the character herself, with few redeeming qualities. The narrator of the audiobook made her seem on the spectrum. I wasn‘t sure if that was the case, a character quirk, or a description of Greenlanders in general. She definitely was a no holds barred character! 13h

I‘ve also decided to start this audiobook between listening to Kristin Lavransdatter. #Greenland #foodandlit @Catsandbooks

marleed Oh I read the Kristen Lavransdatter series for a college course - many moons ago. My roommate was in the class and years later named her daughter Kristen after the book. 1w
Texreader @marleed I read it about 30 years ago! Gulp! It was memorable. Looking forward to reading it again. 1w

Snow Day | Mercer Mayer
post image

Well it‘s snowing where I live in northern Vermont today so I‘ll be reading about the Challenger, dipping into the New Yorker, watching the Red Sox play baseball and the Celtics play in the playoffs. Except for the snow, it sounds like a great day!

ChaoticMissAdventures I am reading this currently too. It is incredible the details he goes into on how the parts work (or don't) and the politics of it all. So many people raising alarms who were just ignored. 1mo
Suet624 @ChaoticMissAdventures you‘re the reason I picked this book up at the library!! And yes, the politics is infuriating. 1mo
quietlycuriouskate You've got snow... I'm sitting here in a t-shirt getting in some anticipatory apprehension for the heatwave that's in the forecast this coming week. 1mo

Suet624 @TheLudicReader exactly my feeling. 1mo
Amiable Such a good book! 1mo
Suet624 @Amiable I‘m so impressed by people who can write a book like this. The author includes so much info and yet I never feel that I can skim because it‘s all so interesting 1mo
Suet624 @Amiable I think I took it out of the library but never read it. Then I watched a documentary about the event. Should I check it out? 1mo
Amiable @Suet624 The documentary was probably the one that was based on the book, so if you liked it then you may also enjoy the book. I found it absolutely fascinating. 1mo

Pickpick

I love the Russian folktale of The Snegurochka, and that‘s what this book is about. Illustrated by the beloved Tomie dePaola, this version has a different ending. If you know anything about pagan lore and teaching, you‘ll see the similarities here to such figures as the Green Man, Oak King, Holly King, Callieach, and more. This is one of my favorite folktales and I plan on getting the Russian versions as well for their art and linguistics.

Not sure why I feel compelled to follow up on my last post about shoveling with this information, but please humor me. 🥴🤪. A big old 12-18” of snow and high winds for two days.

Butterfinger It was a good thing you cleared off your roofs. Stay safe and warm. 4mo
Suet624 @Butterfinger thanks! As long as the wind doesn‘t knock out our electricity it should be a lovely few days. 4mo
AmyG Wow! We are getting snow, too. Just got pulled out of a snow bank. Stay home. Stay safe. 4mo

ChaoticMissAdventures I live in a town where snow in the forecast shuts everything down, I can't imagine this 😂. We had 2 days of snow this week and I haven't left my house. You snow people are a different breed! Hope you stay warm and snug. 4mo
Suet624 @ChaoticMissAdventures I remember when I lived in Tennessee and once there was a thin layer of ice on the roads that stopped everyone for several days. So I get it. I pay extra for studded tires now and shovel throughout a snowstorm so I don't have to get stuck with shoveling all 12 inches in one go. :). Where do you live? 4mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @Suet624 I live in Portland Oregon, and we get snow every year usually once and no one is prepared! I have lived in snowier places but people here are super dangerous driving, there was a 100 cat pile up on Thursday, so I just don't leave the house (super lucky I can work from home) Ice is the real danger! 4mo
Suet624 @ChaoticMissAdventures that‘s wild. I thought Portland got a good amount of snow. And a 100 car pileup? That‘s nuts! 4mo
AkashaVampie U and me don't live too too car from each other. I'm in Plattsburgh, NY 4mo
AkashaVampie I meant far... not car 4mo
Jeg Wow wow. 4mo
kspenmoll Sue, thinking of you- hope hope you din‘t lose power. 💕 4mo
sarahbarnes Wow. Hope you‘re staying safe. 4mo
Suet624 @AkashaVampie You're right! We could practically wave to each other.. :)
4mo
Suet624 @Jeg In some ways it's nice - it's so old school Vermont to have snow up past your head. 4mo
Suet624 @kspenmoll Thanks Katherine. So far so good. The high winds haven't started yet but we are overwhelmed by the snow right now. 4mo
Suet624 @sarahbarnes Besides snow shoveling, all is good. Definitely not driving . 4mo
marleed Stay warm and safe. We are due to get significant snow this Tuesday and Wednesday. I‘m hoping I get a chance to shovel in doses but unlikely as I watch my 2-yo grandson on weekdays. But I‘m hopeful this will be our last hurrah for significant snow this season 🤞 4mo
AkashaVampie @Suet624 my hubby works over in VT. So he probably drives by u all the time. He works for Performance Food Group as an overnight truck driver. He is working today in all the shit. 4mo
Jeg Sue I have some vague memories of high snow when we lived in North Swanzey near Keene NH. Not being able to go to school. We caught a bus which took us to a new school Mt Caesar . 4mo
JenniferEgnor I ordered this book and it just came in the post today. I love this story and didn‘t know Tomie dePaola had done a book for this…thank you for this post/tag!!! 3mo
Suet624 @JenniferEgnor how funny! I know nothing about the book! But I‘m really happy for you. (edited) 3mo
JenniferEgnor @Suet624 it‘s the story of The Snegurochka! Russian folk tale similar to the old pagan stories about the changing seasons and their various figures (green man, holly and oak king, etc) 3mo
Suet624 @JenniferEgnor wonderful! 3mo
