One minute sweet compassion, one minute eugenics twaddle. It didn‘t inspire the sweet feelings of Daddy long legs

I really enjoyed Daddy Long Legs and I enjoy the wittier sections of this. However, if I read “subnormal” or “feebleminded” one more tome, it is over with this one.

Ok so this year has been ok in books in general but this one is a DNF. I feel bad by the fact that I read 50 pages. I should give even left... I enjoy Daddy Long Legs and this is the second part so I was hoping to enjoy this one. I was so wrong! It really didn't age propetly raisist comments and treats very bad the kids with disabilities. Do a favor to yourself and NEVER finish it.

Pickpick

One of my all-time favorite books, I discovered this sequel to Daddy-Long-Legs shortly after ending a relationship that we had both thought was on track for wedding bells. Sallie's story really resonated with me at the time, and I still love to revisit her as she matures and grows, realizing that she wants more from life than just money and security, and that she needs to be with someone who is growing with her. One of my favorite quotes below...

TheAromaofBooks “The girl he loves is not the me I want to be. It's the me I've been trying to grow away from all this last year. ... I pretend when I am with him. I am not myself, and if we were to live together in constant daily intercourse, I'd have to keep on pretending all my life.“ Now that I've been happily married for almost ten years to someone with whom there is no pretense, I'm even more thankful for the choice I made back in 2004 - never settle!! 4y
Bookwormjillk That‘s such a pretty cover. I love old books. 4y
ravenlee What a great story - kudos to you for making the tough choice! And what felicity to find the right book at the right time. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - me, too!! This one is from 1915!!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @ravenlee - Thank you! At the time it was so hard, and it was hard when I was still single for the next six years, wondering if I'd “missed my chance“ - but now I can't imagine life with anyone else besides the one I married!!! 4y

#BookReport is mostly #BookSpinBonanza progress - finished Pigeon Post, King of the Wind, The Mystery of the Blue Train, Borgel (rather than the Snark-Out Boys as pictured haha), & Daddy-Long-Legs, so a pretty solid week!!

Read 282 pages yesterday for #24B4Monday, so a bit behind schedule for my goal of 1000 pages by the end of the weekend, but I think I can do it!! Lots of work around the house scheduled today, though!!

@Andrew65 @Cinfhen

Andrew65 That‘s a great first day total, have total faith that you will do it. 😊👍 4y
Cinfhen Oh wow!!! You killed it this week 💜🙌🏻 4y
mydearwatson I love _The Snarkout Boys..._! I want to reread them, but I can‘t find them in the library here 😫. (edited) 4y

Lcsmcat I have that same edition of Bells on Their Toes - and the matching Cheaper By the Dozen! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @mydearwatson - it's one of my very favorites!! I found a copy cheap on eBay, so you may have similar luck - I paid less than $5 for mine!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Lcsmcat - I really need to upgrade my copy of Cheaper by the Dozen, as it's a paperback that is getting worn from many readings!! 4y

Time for another #24B4Monday readathon!!! I'm hoping to read 1000 pages this time around - possibly challenging with my work schedule, but I'm going for it nonetheless!!

Tagged book will probably be my first read, unless I get to it tonight!

Thanks for hosting @Andrew65 @sumisbooks @jb72 !!!

Andrew65 A great target 🙌 Good luck, thanks for playing along. 😊👍 4y

While Daddy Long-Legs is better known than its sequel, I love Dear Enemy way more. Sallie ends up in charge of an orphanage, and finds herself butting heads with the local curmudgeonly doctor. It's an absolutely delightful #epistolorynovel that I highly recommend, as Sallie learns so much about who she is and what she wants from life.

Parts of this were sweet, but other parts did not age well. In the end I couldn't get past that.

I love the #epistolary novels of Jean Webster. I did not discover Dear Enemy until somewhat recently although I grew up loving Daddy Longlegs.

I think the same artist did the Anne of Green Gables ones... 🤔

I love these books! Daddy Long Legs especially ❤️

Wilkie Daddy Long Legs was one of my favourites. I had no idea that there was a sequel 💕 7y
LauraBrook Yes! Daddy Long Legs and sequels are so good! A few years ago, there was a musical done based on Daddy - I still get songs stuck in my head! 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @LauraBrook - ooh! I want to see that! I've seen the Fred Astaire movie (but that really only had a passing resemblance to the book) 7y
LauraBrook @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Yeah, I was disappointed in the Astaire movie as well. Such a bummer! At least the dancing sequences were lovely to watch. I don't know how far or wide the musical went, maybe it premiered here (Milwaukee, WI), but it was faithful to the book. Made this #booknerd very happy! 7y

Sallie McBride is all I aspire to be. Also this is one of the best sequels OF ALL TIME.
