The Piano Teacher
The Piano Teacher | Elfriede Jelinek, Joachim Neugroschel
The most popular work from provocative Austrian Nobel laureate Elfriede Jelinek,The Piano Teacher is a searing portrait of a woman bound between a repressive society and her darkest desires. Erika Kohut is a piano teacher at the prestigious and formal Vienna Conservatory, who still lives with her domineering and possessive mother. Her life appears boring, but Erika, a quiet thirty-eight-year-old, secretly visits Turkish peep shows at night and watched sadomasochistic films. Meanwhile, a handsome, self-absorbed, seventeen-year-old student has become enamored with Erika and sets out to seduce her. She resists him at first--but then the dark passions roiling under the piano teachers subdued exterior explode in a release of perversity, violence, and degradation.

Day 4. Shivers
Per Goodreads: “The Piano Teacher is a shocking, searing and aching portrait of a woman bound between a repressive society and her darkest desires.”
Definitely felt like this fit the bill for “shivers”. Erika, the piano teacher definitely has *issues*, and watching everything unfold in this novel made me shiver. The synopsis on Goodreads did not prepare me for it at all.

This book is tough to read. It will not appeal to most. It takes all the wounds and injuries we inflict on each other in the name of love & presents them as a physical reality. Erika Kohut is a possession. She has associated love with submission and pain. In the hands of a competent Dom, she would have blossomed. Often, in our desperate need for a connection, we end up repelling others. Such a sad book. ⚠️ Self-harm, violence 212/1,001 #1001Books

A love story completely without catharsis of any kind, for anyone involved. Two people trying desperately to break out of their loneliness, both thrust violently back into it. Human connection and desperate life-urge both brutally thwarted by the sheer crossedness of the two people's purposes, the sheer depth of their mutual misapprehension. I'm stoned, sure, but this book is brilliant. I'm off to go cry forever now.

After spending an extra week in Amsterdam because of my missing passport, I‘m finally ready to move on to Germany and The Neverending Story! I did use my extra time wisely, and got some of my “tickets” for the other countries I plan on visiting on my #BackpackEurope tour 👍

@ErinSueG #crimesagainstcovers Day 5: I really hated this book. I've read some weird shit but this one was disturbing beyond reason 🤢
Maybe I could put it under a leg of a wobbly table? Nah, couldn't bring myself to do it, lol!

Erinsuereads I mean the cover says enough for me to not want to pick this one up. If I ever do another weird book cover challenge this one better be in there. 6y

When it comes to this novel I can never make up my mind, the characters are a dizzying whirl of contradictions. The fragile line drawn between love and hate throughout the text becomes part of my response as a reader. No one gets off lightly under Jelinek's shrewd gaze.

You'll never think of #piano-playing in the same way ever again. The movie is genius. Michael Haneke and Isabelle Huppert 🙌🏽

I should read the book.

This is definitely not an easy read. The writing is peculiar and very dense, with what dialogue there is retold, so that every page is a massive block of text. It takes some getting used to, but if you do soldier through, it's a fascinating read! If you just want the story, the movie is equally good.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Added this to my Amazon wish list today so I don't forget about it. I think the style will suit me just fine. 👍 8y

"He says: A woman like you don't have to do this. She is not ugly, after all. She has no visible physical defects, except for her age. Her teeth are real." (The teeth comment ?) (Also, this is sad, not at all funny.)

Maike Sounds like it's a giant achievement to have real teeth at 35 🙄 8y

I keep seeing the movie in my head as I read this, and I think I prefer it to the book! (But then Haneke is a genius.) While googling the movie, I stumbled upon this screenshot, which is pure gold, and I was also reminded of the awesome final scene, WHICH I HAD FORGOTTEN!

BookishFeminist Beautiful passage. Thanks for translating because other I wouldn't have a clue as to what this says 😂 8y

MyBookLife @BookishFeminist @tricours You're right, I'm Swedish. Good memory! There are a few others from Sweden that I follow, but not as many as I would want to. At the same time, the charm with litsy is to discuss books with people from other countries and cultures. 8y
tricours @BookishFeminist @irre @MyBookLife part of why I'd like to get more Scandinavians here is to increase the Litsy database of Scandinavian books! Of the last 10 books I've looked up on Litsy, I think 7 where not there... I've been keeping my last 4 library books on hold while waiting for them to be added! After the last book I read (not yet on Litsy), a horrible sappy disaster of a story about WUUUUV between "broken people", I need something darker. The awesome French movie based on this book is one of the most disturbing I've ever seen, and I love anything disturbing, so I'm super excited to finally read this book (in Norwegian because my German is still crap) ???

Trav Oh my gosh, I've had the Piano Teacher on my hard drive for yearssss and still haven't watched it. I think I might do that tonight after your post! 8y
tricours @Trav do it! It's a wonderful movie (as in well made and with awesome actors), but a very difficult one to watch. Just note that there are two movies with the same title, the other one is WW2 related and depressing for a different reason! 8y
Trav @tricours I'm pretty certain I have the right movie -- it's directed by Michael Haneke? I had every intention of watching it last night but that glorious thing known as a headache decided to pay me a visit. 8y
