Amazonia: Five Years at the Epicenter of the Dot.com Juggernaut | James Marcus
7 posts | 3 read
The entertaining story of the first five years of Amazon.com is recounted by employee number 55. "The most impressive aspect . . . is Marcus's sculpting of self into an everyman caught between two magnets--culture and commerce."--David Shields ("Remote: Reflections on Life in the Shadow of Celebrity") 224 pp.

I don't believe any of these short stories on Amazon are on Litsy yet - but I've read the first 3 in this Getaway series and have enjoyed them! Nothing I have in ebook format sounds good to me, so I keep turning to these short stories when I need something to read on my phone.
I seem to have a short attention span lately...and have a hard time committing to a regular sized book. These have been a perfect solution! It's a bonus that they are free.

Amazon is evil but so convenient so many mixed feeling about the company. This post isn‘t about that though. It‘s about the headline. This headline makes me both happy and very sad. I love that people are taking the time and learning, myself included, but that we still have to educate ourselves so much, myself included, makes me sad and angry.

LibrarianRyan I agree. About the only thing that made me happy about this was Black Authors books, especially debut YA novels that sold out. On twitter at least they were redirecting people to Bookstore.org and Books and Crannies online book stores. 4y
OrangeMooseReads @LibrarianRyan I agree that is a fantastic part of this. I haven‘t been on Twitter much in recent days so that is awesome to see that people have been directing away from Amazon. 4y

LibrarianRyan @OrangeMooseReads I have found Twitter easier to handle lately mainly because most of my twitter is Book twitter. I had lots of fun yesterday reading all the #Pitmad entries. 4y
Sace Twitter over the past few days made me realize I've been gathering a lot of these books since the 2016 election but I have yet to read them. I did buy a few more from Bookstore this week. 4y
Sace And thanks for acknowledging the convenience of Amazon. I go back and forth with my Amazon guilt. 4y

Amazon is doing World Book Day again. Get 9 free ebooks from around the world. I see a lot of location based reading challenges. Maybe some of these books might help.

ErinSBecker Thanks! This is great! 4y

1. Always ask for books. I have a just books wishlist on Amazon and everyone knows that is the best bet for a gift for me.
2. Yes! I love to give books. Man Cub and my dad are the only 2 that don‘t really read much in my immediate family.

New kindle to take on vacation, they got me at “Waterproof” and “trade in”. 🤷🏼‍♀️ There‘s a sucker born every minute.

JenReadsAlot Nice! 5y
BookDragonNotWorm Ooh. How do you like it? 5y
peaKnit @BookDragonNotWorm I think I do like it:) it‘s a lot like my former paper white but that was 5 years old and the trade in offer was pretty solid...and waterproof, I‘ve been eyeing the Oasis just because of that, so I am excited about that as I live to read in or near water!! It‘s a little more compact but the screen is the same size as my old one. Thanks!! 5y

So to make a long story short my paternal grandfather came early with birthday money (he shows up on birthdays and holidays with money) so mom had me buy my birthday present on Amazon. As I was checking out I found out this!! How did I miss this?? Needless to say we will be taking full advantage of this!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That‘s wonderful! Every little bit helps! 5y

I know I get down on Amazon a LOT and I do have my reasons. But for all our Amazon devotes out there, you should read this before you buy any “classic“ literature in print or in Kindle. It's really interesting.

sudi Thanks for sharing this article, but i think this applies to so many other classics as well. Since i live in India, anytime i search for a classic on amazon these copies are the first thing that shows up in the search. And the one published by a well known publisher will be at the bottom. If these copies have so many errors and copyright issues, they shouldn't be advertised at top of the page. 5y
Mdargusch Fascinating and sad. I‘ve been afraid to buy many products from amazon because fake articles are produced and sold as the real thing and how do you know? 5y
