Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin
Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin | Liesl Shurtliff
15 posts | 30 read | 15 to read
This funny fractured fairy tale goes behind the scenes of Rumpelstiltskin. New York Times Bestselling author Liesl Shurtliff "spins words into gold [Kirby Larson, Newbery Honor winner]." In a magic kingdom where your name is your destiny, 12-year-old Rump is the butt of everyone's joke. But when he finds an old spinning wheel, his luck seems to change. Rump discovers he has a gift for spinning straw into gold. His best friend, Red Riding Hood, warns him that magic is dangerous, and shes right. With each thread he spins, he weaves himself deeper into a curse. To break the spell, Rump must go on a perilous quest, fighting off pixies, trolls, poison apples, and a wickedly foolish queen. The odds are against him, but with courage and friendshipand a cheeky sense of humorhe just might triumph in the end. A Texas Bluebonnet finalist and winner of the ILA award for middle grade fiction, Rump is perfect for fans of Gail Carson Levine's Ella Enchanted or Adam Gidwitz's A Tale Dark and Grimm. And don't miss Liesl Shurtliff's other fairy tale retellings: Jack: The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk and Red: The True Story of Red Riding Hood. "A fresh riff on the Grimm Brothers' Rumpelstiltskin, told with wit from the impish point of view of the troublemaker himself." People "Lighthearted and inventive, Rump amusingly expands a classic tale." Brandon Mull, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Fablehaven. From the Hardcover edition.

My daughter had an awesome experience last week. Our school participated in an “all school read” of Shurtliff‘s “Rump,” which culminated in the author visiting the school! We read a few chapters together each night, and Josie was so into it she wrote a letter to the author and gave it to the school librarian. The librarian passed it on, and Josie got to have lunch with Ms. Shurtliff and received this signed copy of another one of her books! ⬇️

BeckyWithTheGoodBooks Josie came home that day exclaiming, “Mom, I could be a writer!” It was an amazing day for her and one I hope she never forgets! 13mo

A really cute MG story about the origins of Rumpelstiltskin! Great messages about finding yourself and how our destinies can be found if we have a bit of faith in ourselves and in a certain kind of magic. My 3rd grader's teacher started reading this to them so I thought I'd play along. 😁 #middlegrade #raisingreaders #kidlit

Delightfully funny, a major twist on the original story with bits of others sprinkled in.... (what do you think the poison apples are from?) Definitely worth the read.

AkashaVampie It almost sounds like Once Upon A Time show 4y

This book was a great "read" for my unplanned trip to SD.
I love reading different versions of fairy tales.

Some work related reading. I‘m hoping to zip through this stack and choose 2 for a middle grades book club type program over the summer in July & August. They ALL tie in nicely with our summer reading theme.!

This has had 2 cover changes. Rump is book 1. original cover is the bottom right. changed for the paperback to the bottom center, and kept that style through book 3. When book four came out just a few months ago it was restyled again as the top right corner.

While this book is a series, each title can be read independently.

@cwarnier this was the series you asked about. Sorry, I thought I already posted this one.

Rumplestiltskin is a fairy tale that's honestly always creeped me out. Maybe it's because of the Shelly Duvall Faerie Tale Theatre version, which I saw at an impressionable age. So I was reluctant to read this, frankly. But this is a fine little story that I wished had gone into deeper depth. There's no romance here, but some nice exploration of friendships instead.

MochiiMocha That sounds decent! Perhaps I'll give a go at this book. 7y

While at my store today, my daughter picked up one book (Lost in a Book) and her free book choice for reading 8 books (Rump). #raisingreaders

It has been THE WORST hearing the word "Rump" over and over again after the past week. The reader for the audio was so annoying, but I am still having such a hard time concentrating on reading. However, if it had been another time, I may have liked it more, and I've heard from my kiddos already that they love the book. It ultimately boils down to poor foresight on my part. #fairytaleretellings

LindsayReads Oh hey! Just realized this counts for #magicalmonday #magicalcover 7y
BookInMyHands I liked this one, but I read it not listed, and not after the world fell apart. I hear you though, I've been reading a book I would normally have finished in 3 nights for over a week! 7y
BookInMyHands *listened! Damn it Litsy, make an edit button for comments! 7y
LindsayReads @BookInMyHands Yeah, I thought the message was good for the most part, and I think my kids are pumped to read/discuss it, so really I'm cool with it. Now to get out of this funk! 7y
