Cosmology of Monsters
Cosmology of Monsters | Shaun Hamill
"If John Irving ever wrote a horror novel, it would be something like this. I loved it." --Stephen King A tender and terrifying literary horror novel--the author's debut--that tells the story of a family (creators of a haunted house attraction called the Wandering Dark) and the hereditary monsters--both metaphorical and all-too-real--that haunt them. Monsters both figurative and very literal stalk the Turner family. The youngest child, Noah, narrates the family history: how in the late '60s, his bookish mother Margaret marries Lovecraft-lover Harry against her better judgment. The couple has two daughters--Sydney, born for the spotlight, and the brilliant but awkward Eunice, a natural writer and storyteller. But finances are tight, Margaret and Eunice are haunted by horrific dreams, and Harry starts acting strangely. He becomes obsessed with the construction of an elaborately crafted haunted house attraction, christened the Wandering Dark. The family tries to shield baby Noah from the house's faux horrors, but unbeknownst to them, he's being visited by a furry beast with glowing orange eyes--the same ghastly being glimpsed by both his mother and sister. However, unlike them, Noah decides to let the creature in . . . As he approaches the conclusion of his family's tale, it becomes more and more apparent that there's only one way the story can end: with Noah making the ultimate sacrifice.

As they say… Better late than never! Here is my #BookSpinBingo TBR for the month of November. I am about 12 books behind on my 100 book goal for the year, so I‘m taking a different tactic this month. Half of these books are about 200 pages or less so I‘m hoping to be caught up by the end of the month… Fingers crossed 🤞

Roary47 That‘s a great idea! 😍 13mo

One by one, a family falls under a curious Lovecraftian “curse”

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, the story was compelling in that uncomfortable way good horrors of this type should be, on the other, the main “relationship” is the most horrifying thing of all—only I‘m not sure the author had intended it as such...?

(Contains a nasty case of grooming)

Still, I‘m deciding to read it in good faith, so:

Stephen King nails it is his blurb for this wonderful book when he writes: “Horror works only when we care for the people involved, and because we care for the Turners, their nightmare becomes ours.”

Read it for the Lovecraft references, read it it you like great horror, or if you agree with King about the foundation great scary story. Trust me, it won‘t give you nightmares, but it will make you treasure your family a bit more.

I honestly really like this book, I mean look at that cover! I just didn‘t “love” it like I thought I would. For an authors first time out, it‘s a pretty compelling story. A mixture of Lovecraft and Gaiman, a peak behind the veil of two worlds living side by side. A world of humans and a world of monsters. A page turner all the way to the end, but I felt cheated out of a better explanation and felt the end was unsatisfying.

Erinreadsthebooks I‘m sorry. Are you being hugged by Jeffrey dean Morgan in your profile picture?!? 4y
BookMaven9 Hi. Why yes I am. 💖 4y
Erinreadsthebooks @booklover2 💜💜💜So jealous! I love him so much, and I‘m not one to swoon over celebrities but I thought he was GREAT in The Walking Dead (although I haven‘t watched the last few seasons). He seems like one who would be a genuinely nice human being. 4y
BookMaven9 You will@be happy to know, he is a an absolute delight. Just a lovely person. We met him at a walker stalker convention. I‘ve been fortunate enough to have met a lot of the cast. But this was definitely a high point. I‘m caught up except season finale. Watching that tomorrow 4y

Family drama, Lovecraft style. I was really into the first half of this book. It was gripping and turning into a wild horror- mystery, but it shifted gears halfway and the least interesting character became the focus.

Sleepswithbooks How‘d you get a picture of my ex? (And I certainly don‘t mean that lovely lady!) 5y

Both monster story and family drama, this debut novel embraces the Weird, fitting for its Lovecraft references, and its perfect pacing makes it positively unputdownable.

This may be the best story I've read all year. I'm in awe with what the author accomplished. The story was more than just scary. It was heart-breaking and gut-wrenching. It was a story of loss, mental illness, outcasts, family history, estrangement, sacrifice, and true love. There were so many layers to the story, and some of the writing was so good I'd re-read multiple pages at a time. The ending left me an emotional wreck. Wow. Just... wow.

vivastory I'm seeing this pop up a bit more, definitely going to check it out. Great review 👍 5y

This book is pure imagination. It takes the horror of Lovecraft and the psychological terror of Stephen King and blends them into this gorgeous, creepy, frightening slurry of human (and non-human) emotion. All the elements of a good story are here, beginning with the hero with a quest - and Shaun Hamill steps confidently into the circle of horror masters.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This book was fantastic and right up my alley for #Scarathlon

Monsters stalk the Turner family and they have suffered for it over the generations by ignoring them. But what happens when the youngest child, Noah, invites the monsters in?
