The winding streets and narrow alleys of Karolene hide many secrets, and Hitomi is one of them. Orphaned at a young age, Hitomi has learned to hide her magical aptitude and who her parents really were. Most of all, she must conceal her role in the Shadow League, an underground movement working to undermine the powerful and corrupt Arch Mage Wilhelm Blackflame. When the League gets word that Blackflame intends to detain—and execute—a leading political family, Hitomi volunteers to help the family escape. But there are more secrets at play than Hitomi's, and much worse fates than execution. When Hitomi finds herself captured along with her charges, it will take everything she can summon to escape with her life.

Oh, that was GOOD. Despite the fact that I kept getting distracted while reading this, I really enjoyed this story. I loved Hitomi & was really fascinated by her world. Also, this more of a lengthy novella than it is a full book, which means the plot was incredibly tight — sometimes a little too tight, a little too fast, but not bad. I do wish we‘d gotten more time with some of the other characters too. Hopefully they‘ll return in Book 2! ★★★★☆.

Sunbolt by Intisar Khanani is such a refreshing YA fantasy! When I pick up YA reads with elements of magic, I'm always very hesitant. Far too often, we see a very immature character that lacks training, but somehow manages to master their power just in the nick of time. I'm so happy to say that that wasn't the case here!

Argh! You can't stop there!

Enjoyed this one, perhaps more so once Val came into it -- though the situation reminded me VERY strongly of Robin McKinley's SUNSHINE.

Sunbolt is a fantasy YA novella that manages to be both well-paced and thought-provoking. I loved that the heroine was both selfish and prejudiced as well as loyal and courageous. The story also managed to do a good job of inverting racist stereotypes.

I really loved this book, the only downfall is that it is not long enough. The length is only 142 pages. The amount of world building, fleshed out characters done in so little pages was astounding. From the first page to the last Khanani draws you into the world & tosses you out craving more.
