A Year of Biblical Womanhood
A Year of Biblical Womanhood: How a Liberated Woman Found Herself Sitting on Her Roof, Covering Her Head, and Calling Her Husband "master" | Rachel Held Evans
New York Times BestsellerWhat is "biblical womanhood" . . . really?Strong-willed and independent, Rachel Held Evans couldn't sew a button on a blouse before she embarked on a radical life experiment--a year of biblical womanhood. Intrigued by the traditionalist resurgence that led many of her friends to abandon their careers to assume traditional gender roles in the home, Evans decides to try it for herself, vowing to take all of the Bible's instructions for women as literally as possible for a year. Pursuing a different virtue each month, Evans learns the hard way that her quest for biblical womanhood requires more than a "gentle and quiet spirit" (1 Peter 3:4). It means growing out her hair, making her own clothes, covering her head, obeying her husband, rising before dawn, abstaining from gossip, remaining silent in church, and even camping out in the front yard during her period.See what happens when a thoroughly modern woman starts referring to her husband as "master" and "praises him at the city gate" with a homemade sign. Learn the insights she receives from an ongoing correspondence with an Orthodox Jewish woman, and find out what she discovers from her exchanges with a polygamist wife. Join her as she wrestles with difficult passages of scripture that portray misogyny and violence against women. With just the right mixture of humor and insight, compassion and incredulity, A Year of Biblical Womanhood is an exercise in scriptural exploration and spiritual contemplation. What does God truly expect of women, and is there really a prescription for biblical womanhood? Come along with Evans as she looks for answers in the rich heritage of biblical heroines, models of grace, and all-around women of valor.

Last year I listened to “A year of living biblically” by AJ Jacobs and I really enjoyed it. It came to my attention that Rachel Held Evans had written this so I wanted to read it for comparison. She has a great writing style and I laughed out loud a lot but I‘m finding myself very much at odds with patriarchal religion mired in ‘rules‘ that reflect knowledge, understanding and survival from a thousand years ago.

MatchlessMarie I loved her Dan sign 😂❤️ 3y
mcctrish @MatchlessMarie YES! And that it was one of things Dan was grateful for at the end ❤️❤️ 3y

This is making me laugh out loud despite the fact I just found out RHE passed away at 37 🤯😭

KathyWheeler This was my first book of hers and still my favorite. I was so shocked when she died. 3y
mcctrish @KathyWheeler I am a bit shook!!! I couldn‘t figure out why I couldn‘t tag her on social media and then someone commented on a post I did on IG and I was all “WHAT!” 3y
KathyWheeler @mcctrish I think I was out buying her latest book when I heard about it, and my first thought was, “She‘s so young; they must mean another person.” But no. 3y

Re-read. I read this first before the author's passing and found myself mourning the loss of her again and again this time around.

I first read this book about 5 years ago, but I think I loved it more this time. This one has such a good mix of serious & humor. I couldn‘t help but be sad at times, thinking about her husband‘s loss (& her kids who weren‘t born yet in this book). She was a relatable, strong, & gifted voice in Christian ministry.

Megabooks Yay!! So glad you enjoyed it again 💖💖 5y

Initially, I was afraid of this book, as I am a lot of books that purport to tell women about Christianity. But Rachel took a wide approach. She looked at many interpretations of the Bible & church, she delved into the lives of biblical women, and celebrated Judaism too. She looked into a different aspect of biblical womanhood each month. Bowl me over impressed by Rachel and her humility. I can‘t wait to read her other books. Highly recommend! 5⭐️

underthebelljar I highly recommend her books Searching for Sunday and Inspired. She was a gifted writer. 5y
KathyWheeler I love her books. This one is my favorite but Searching for Sunday is also good, and I liked Evolving in Monkey Town too. 5y
Scochrane26 I don‘t read many Christian books, but I like RHE & Jen Hatmaker. Both a little more progressive than some. They were good friends. 5y

Scochrane26 Also, I actually got this at the library tonight. I had planned to reread it & was reminded when you started it. I wanted the audio, but library didn‘t have it. 5y
Megabooks @BookishJess she was. It‘s so sad she died so young. Thanks for the recs!! 5y
Megabooks @KathyWheeler you probably doubled my crying during this book! Every time I thought about how terrible it is to lose someone young, I‘d tear up again! She‘d write something profound, my eyes would well up. 😢 Thanks for the recs! I‘m definitely going to read more of her books. 5y
Megabooks @Scochrane26 I‘ll look at Jen‘s books, too. I‘m glad I inspired you to do a reread. I‘m glad I own a copy, so I can reread later as well. 💜 5y
KathyWheeler @Megabooks Yeah. That‘s happening to me reading Inspired. Another Christian writer I also like a lot is Lauren F. Winner. My favorites of hers are Mudhouse Sabbath and Girl Meets God. 5y
SamAnne Okay.....does the book actually suggest women call husbands master? 5y
Megabooks @SamAnne absolutely not!! She and her husband hated following that so-called Christian advice. (To the point where he said, “if I order you to stop calling me master, will it stop this?”) In the end, she found no biblical support for those 1950s Stepford wife advice books! She found out the real meaning of a lot of things that had been twisted to fit a mold by the church patriarchy. It‘s interesting. 5y
SamAnne @Megabooks LOL. Whew. 5y
CBee Anne Lamott is also wonderful! 5y

COMPLETED for #NFNov . I‘m not religious, so I‘m not the best person to judge it based on its ecclesiastical merits. The writing is very good, and I enjoyed the author‘s humor, wit and humanity.

#TIL: Many church leaders attempt to use the Bible to define womanhood by a list of rigid rules. But the Bible does not present a single model for womanhood. The notion that it contains a formula for being a “good” woman is a myth.
@rsteve388 @Clwojick

Chrissyreadit I‘m also not religious, but really enjoyed Rachel Evans book. She died suddenly a few months ago and I consider it a heartbreaking loss. 5y
Scochrane26 I‘m glad you like this. I don‘t read many Christian books, but I like RHE & Jen hatmaker if I feel in the mood. @Chrissyreadit I think it‘s a heartbreaking loss, too. Her children (I think she had 2, maybe only 1) are so young. And she was a voice for progressive Christians. 5y
Chrissyreadit @Scochrane26 yes- she had two young children. I follow Jen Hatmaker, Glennon Doyle, and Brene Brown, because they are so positive about community. Their tributes to Rachel Evans had me bawling. 5y
Amiable @Chrissyreadit @scochrane26 I think RHE was a really good writer ... very thoughtful and insightful. I was particularly moved by her comments about the difference between charity and justice, and why Christians (and everyone, really) should be advocating for social justice. Her death at such a young age is a huge tragedy. 5y

Next up for #NFNov. I am not religious in the slightest, but I thought this account of a woman who lived a full year according to biblical dictates looked interesting.

#TIL: That there are evangelical Christians who vote for Democrats, believe in evolution and are not convinced that everyone who is different from them is going to Hell. Huh. That somewhat restores my faith in this country.

@rsteve388 @Clwojick

Scochrane26 This is a really good book. And now so tragic since she died this year. She grew up evangelical but broke away due to differences in belief. She got a lot of heat from evangelicals about her more progressive beliefs. (edited) 5y
rwmg I really enjoyed this one. Have you read this similar book by a non observant Jew? 5y
Amiable @rwmg I have read that one, yes! I enjoy AJ Jacobs‘ work. 5y
Amiable @Scochrane26 I just saw that she died this year! So sad —only 37. 😢 5y

Your books helped me to reconcile my faith with my feminism. I could not believe it this morning when I heard of your passing. 37 was much too young and so much has been lost in your voice being taken from the world. I hope that as others see the news more will seek out your books and be encouraged to share in your spirit of compassion and acceptance.

Rest in peace, eshet chayil.

Among the women praised in Scripture are warriors, widows, slaves, sister wives, apostles, teachers, concubines, queens, foreigners, prostitutes, prophets, mothers, and martyrs. wmwhat makes these women's stories leap from the page is not the fact that they all conform to some kind of universal ideal, but that, regardless of the cultural context in which they found themselves they lived their lives with valor. They lived their lives with faith.
