Last year I listened to “A year of living biblically” by AJ Jacobs and I really enjoyed it. It came to my attention that Rachel Held Evans had written this so I wanted to read it for comparison. She has a great writing style and I laughed out loud a lot but I‘m finding myself very much at odds with patriarchal religion mired in ‘rules‘ that reflect knowledge, understanding and survival from a thousand years ago.
This is making me laugh out loud despite the fact I just found out RHE passed away at 37 🤯😭
Re-read. I read this first before the author's passing and found myself mourning the loss of her again and again this time around.
I first read this book about 5 years ago, but I think I loved it more this time. This one has such a good mix of serious & humor. I couldn‘t help but be sad at times, thinking about her husband‘s loss (& her kids who weren‘t born yet in this book). She was a relatable, strong, & gifted voice in Christian ministry.
Initially, I was afraid of this book, as I am a lot of books that purport to tell women about Christianity. But Rachel took a wide approach. She looked at many interpretations of the Bible & church, she delved into the lives of biblical women, and celebrated Judaism too. She looked into a different aspect of biblical womanhood each month. Bowl me over impressed by Rachel and her humility. I can‘t wait to read her other books. Highly recommend! 5⭐️
Amen 🙏🏻
Really enjoying this book!
So after therapy today, I went to Barnes and Noble. (The advantages of having it in the next town over!) I picked up these two books and am starting the tagged book tonight because #nonfiction. 😂😂
I also got a custom paperback-size booksleeve from Jena at StoryTimeSleeve on Etsy this week. Love it!! 💖💖 https://www.etsy.com/shop/StoryTimeSleeve
COMPLETED for #NFNov . I‘m not religious, so I‘m not the best person to judge it based on its ecclesiastical merits. The writing is very good, and I enjoyed the author‘s humor, wit and humanity.
#TIL: Many church leaders attempt to use the Bible to define womanhood by a list of rigid rules. But the Bible does not present a single model for womanhood. The notion that it contains a formula for being a “good” woman is a myth.

Next up for #NFNov. I am not religious in the slightest, but I thought this account of a woman who lived a full year according to biblical dictates looked interesting.
#TIL: That there are evangelical Christians who vote for Democrats, believe in evolution and are not convinced that everyone who is different from them is going to Hell. Huh. That somewhat restores my faith in this country.

Your books helped me to reconcile my faith with my feminism. I could not believe it this morning when I heard of your passing. 37 was much too young and so much has been lost in your voice being taken from the world. I hope that as others see the news more will seek out your books and be encouraged to share in your spirit of compassion and acceptance.
Rest in peace, eshet chayil.

I finally got to this one. It was challenging and encouraging and reignited my desire for God, which was everything I hoped it would do. I recommend. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It‘s Sunday so might as well read about the Bible.
This has got to be one of the greatest lol moments of the book. Speaking of Dan, I liked the asides he provides in the book with his perspective on things. 👌

Technically not a novel, but...

I feel like I need to get this quote from St. Teresa of Avila mounted someplace in my house. #goosfraba #relaxitsfriday
Among the women praised in Scripture are warriors, widows, slaves, sister wives, apostles, teachers, concubines, queens, foreigners, prostitutes, prophets, mothers, and martyrs. wmwhat makes these women's stories leap from the page is not the fact that they all conform to some kind of universal ideal, but that, regardless of the cultural context in which they found themselves they lived their lives with valor. They lived their lives with faith.
