YA historical fiction with two main characters: Frankie is a young woman growing up in an orphanage after her father decided he didn‘t want to raise her and her siblings. Pearl is a ghost who often visits the orphanage, as well as other Chicago locations.

Takes place during WWII, and all of the young men are conscripted at 18, many of them never coming home.

I liked both storylines and this different angle on WWII historical fiction.

story is narrated by ghost that‘s makes it unique n interesting. The MC Frankie is a orphan girl ( brought up in orphanage despite having parents). The story revolves around her, portraying her suffering, love- loss, war , financial crisis & family life. In between ghost narrates her own story, initially it felt like a distraction but ok in the long read. It‘s an emotional read, ask many questions about feminism beyond time. 4🌟 #YAbuddyread #YA

WHAT A RIDE!!!! Set during WWII at an orphanage, a ghost narrates Frankie's life. The grit of the theme, which is women will be punished for loving too much, has completely enraged me. I want to bust out of my skin when I feel helpless because of a man. Just an incredible book.

If you like Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore in Ghost, this may be a book for you.

I read this always hoping for the best for Pearl, a very interesting narrator and Frankie a sweet soul forced to be tough in this young adult novel set during WWII.

My audiobook came in on Libby just in time for a morning audiowalk. 3.38 miles during one of the two most beautiful times of the day in San Diego. I got a refreshing view of the canyon, but the photo doesn't capture it so here's a flower along my route. I've been afraid to leave the house, but this felt really good. I wore my mask the whole way and people were good about social distancing but still friendly.

YA historical fiction at it's best! This might be the only book I can recall reading in which the first person narrative is from a ghost. As the story unfolds, the parallels between Frankie an orphan...sort of, abandoned for sure and Pearl (the ghost) are the path leading to freedom for both girls. Set in WWII era Chicago, this story infuses humor, (I laughed out loud) with frustrating heartache. I will read this author again!

Starting the morning with this. It‘s grey and cloudy, cold and breezy outside—perfect weather for reading!
