1953. Roya, a dreamy, idealistic teenager living in Tehran, loves nothing better than to while away the hours in the local stationery shop run by the kindly Mr. Fakhri. His store, stocked with fountain pens, shiny ink bottles, and thick pads of writing paper, also carries Persian classics and poetry and translations of literature from all over the world. In its dusty back rooms, Roya feels safe. And when fatherly Mr. Fakhri, with his keen instinct for a budding romance, introduces her to his other favorite customer -- handsome Bahman, with his burning passion for justice and a shared love for Rumi's poetry -- Roya loses her heart at once. Their courtship continues while dining in the chic cafes of Tehran, watching films at the Cinema Metropole, dancing at tango parties with friends in a time of social liberation, and participating in electrifying political rallies in support of the Prime Minister. But the modest little stationery shop remains their favorite, secret place.

1-Yes. I gather things all year when I see something at a perfect price that would suit friends and family for birthday or Christmas gift. We have around 15 with my girls, their spouses; and grands and their fiancées - so we exchange names/Secret Santa

2-Tagged is a beautiful book whose setting is this shop, where shoppers browse, buy, and fall in love. So good?

Oh my heart😔🩷A beautiful and poignant story.
Roya, a dreamy teenager living amid the political upheaval of 1953 Tehran, finds solace in kindly Mr. Fakhri‘s stationery shop, with books and pens and bottles of jewel-colored ink. It is here she meets and falls in love with Bahman, a handsome intellectual… it‘s a bit reminiscent of Santopolo‘s The Light We Lost 😢💔❤️‍🔥

Eggs Love this quote: “The minute I heard my first love story, I started looking for you, not knowing how blind that was. Lovers don‘t finally meet somewhere. They‘re in each other all along.” 🩵 10mo

A beautiful story of love and life that spans several decades. During the conflict in Tehran, Iran in the 1950's an ambitious young woman and a political activist fall in love inside a stationery shop. However, the pair become separated by the changing political climate of the country forcing them to flee as refugees. Decades later and living their own lives in America, the pair reunite but with a different perspective on their lives.

I just loved this beautiful story of star crossed lovers who meet in 1950s Iran, a time when there was much political turmoil and eventual government coup. In addition to enjoying the captivating story, I also was intrigued by all of the references to lots of different Iranian foods and found myself Googling many of them. This book will pull at your heartstrings and make you hungry, a definite pick for me!

MallenNC I really enjoyed this one too. 3y

What a beautiful love story that ends in heartbreak, but tells how life brings us to unexpected places and gives us love in different ways. But keeps.our hearts with a constant love.

THE STATIONERY SHOP by Marjan Kamali is a tale both of romantic and political tragedy, written with a strong sense of place and time. I liked the story, and how it all unfolded. There were moments I gasped, goosebumps here and there. But I did not love it as much. I felt that towards the end the twists and turns seemed flat and unconvincing. But I was glad to have read this fierce of a novel and made it my first this new year. 🌟🌟🌟

Set in Iran in the 1950s, The Stationery Shop is the love story of two teenagers from different economic classes. Kamali's writing is good, but her strength is her dynamic, depth-rich characters, even the minor ones. I appreciated learning about Tehran's political history. I will definitely read more from this author.
