MLA Handbook
MLA Handbook | The Modern Language Association of America
10 posts | 4 read
The Modern Language Association, the authority on research and writing, takes a fresh look at documenting sources in the eighth edition of the "MLA Handbook." Works are published today in a dizzying range of formats. A book, for example, may be read in print, online, or as an e-book or perhaps listened to in an audio version. On the Web, modes of publication are regularly invented, combined, and modified. Previous editions of the "MLA Handbook" provided separate instructions for each format, and additional instructions were required for new formats. In this groundbreaking new edition of its best-selling handbook, the MLA recommends instead one universal set of guidelines, which writers can apply to any type of source.Shorter and redesigned for easy use, the eighth edition of the "MLA Handbook" guides writers through the principles behind evaluating sources for their research. It then shows them how to cite sources in their writing and create useful entries for the works-cited list.More than just a new edition, this is a new MLA style."

Books that wouldn‘t fit on my shelf and I don‘t read much... but couldn‘t get rid of yet. A lot are from college. I need to fix the one that is being bent, but otherwise they were in rough shape to start with and aren‘t being too abused. Now I‘ll have to find little books to fit in on top.

Ddzmini There‘s a little space at the top 😝📖📚📚 7y
Mrs_Black @Ddzmini I know! It curves back, so nothing will really fit. I‘m going to have to get creative. 7y

I chose this for the #secondchances and #changedyourmindabout prompts. I know it probably isn't what was meant by them, but I went back to college in January, after leaving during my junior year in 1997. I haven't been posting as much fun reading, or doing as many prompts, because working, full time school, and five kids doesn't leave much time. But I'm certainly glad I gave this another chance. #booklove17 #feistyfeb

Bedtime Stories #professor life

JackieSmith It's impressive to me that they simplified the format but the book is just as long. 8y

Diving into the last of the grading... fortified by a nice mug of tea and the thought of better reading to come! #teachersoflitsy

Mixing work reading and pleasure reading.

quirkyreader I love The Duchess of Malfi and Dr. Fautus. 8y
StellarDoc @quirkyreader My students loved Faustus, but didn't finish The Duchess of Malfi. 8y
Hipmommy I'm definitely warming up to the MLA 8th ed. 8y

StellarDoc @Hipmommy Me too. I just don't like the way the book is laid out. 8y
Hipmommy The container thing is dumb and confusing but I like how citations sorta model notes 8y
StellarDoc Yes! My students get so confused by the container business. 8y

A bright spot in stacks of paper-grading these past few days: the new MLA Handbook uses Buffy the Vampire Slayer as an example! #teachersoflitsy

Upon returning from my vacation, this is what I found on my desk this morning. 😱 Five BA theses and a teetering pile of seminar term papers. Yaaaayyyy! 😫 I guess I'd better start reading. 🙉

I don't have any #workplacebooks because I'm a full-time student, so I guess these are as close as I can get! I'm an English major so I have a ton of reference books and handbooks. I want to be an English professor one day so fingers crossed!🤓📚📓📝 #septphotochallenge

BarbaraJean Ah, the MLA handbook! Should have remembered to include that in my pic for today! 8y
ReadingEnvy And MLA just came out with the 8th edition, so of course everything we know is wrong. 8y
BarbaraJean @ReadingEnvy Ugh, yes. We haven't started citation format in my fall classes yet, and I'm not looking forward to revising all my MLA lesson plans... 8y

TheWellReadOwl I think I still have my MLA edition from *cough cough* a hundred editions ago. 😊 Enjoy your classes ... so many good memories right now! 8y
Dragon I miss college and all the books! 8y
Cinfhen Oh No!!! The dreaded MLA handbook 😱😱😱The never ending nightmares those citations caused my kids in high school 8y
katedensen I love and hate the MLA handbook. What classes are you taking this semester? I miss my years as an English major ❤️ 8y
Twocougs Saw the MLA handbook and had a flashback to graduate school. Btw I burned mine when I finished😉. Good luck with your studies!! 8y
ReadingEnvy @BarbaraJean and we in the library have a dilemma of some products updating and others not, some professors knowing and others not... Might be a rough semester! 8y
Leelee08 @BarbaraJean Gotta love the trusty MLA handbook! 8y
Leelee08 @ReadingEnvy Ugh. Exactly. Lol😂 8y
Leelee08 @TheWellReadOwl I'm enjoying every memory, especially after the 10 year absence! 8y
Leelee08 @Dragon That's my favorite part! 8y
Leelee08 @Cinfhen The citations are very frustrating! 8y
Leelee08 @katedfisher I understand that feeling all too well. Let's see here: Southern American Novel, Creative Non-Fiction Composition, Senior Seminar (my thesis), British Romantic Literature, American Elections and Voting, and Historical Losers. Six classes altogether, so I'm trying not to panic. 😱🤓 8y
Leelee08 @Twocougs Thank you so much! I might have to borrow that idea when I'm done! 😂 8y
katedensen @Leelee08 Don't panic! (Hitchhiker's Guide 101). That sounds like a great bunch of classes though--is there any Faulkner on the Southern American Novel syllabus? What are you writing your thesis on? 8y
Leelee08 @katedfisher No Faulkner...my professor decided to go with a contemporary theme this year. All of the Southern novels were written within the past 15 years. Mostly racism/LBGTQ pieces. And I'm writing my thesis on postpartum depression/hysteria in early 19th century feminist texts. 😀 8y
katedensen @Leelee08 Oh, very cool! Which ones are you most excited about? Also: awesome thesis topic! 8y
Leelee08 @katedfisher Historical Losers and British Lit are my favorites. I looooove those classes. And thank you for liking my thesis topic! I've got a meeting to finalize it tomorrow so hopefully everything goes well!😊😊 8y
kspenmoll Thesis topic does sound intriguing- good luck! 8y
Leelee08 @kspenmoll Thank you so much! 8y
MemoirsForMe Wow! Love these books and your thesis topic. Your future students are a lucky bunch. 😊👍🏻👏🏻 8y

Pickpick

For #day14 of the #augustphotochallenge, here's my #uniquefact. Years after graduating from university, I decided that I liked books so much that I went back to college to study for my Library Technician diploma. After 3 1/2 years of part-time study, I graduated and have been working part-time at a college ever since! I have a full-time job too which means I work 6 days a week, but I love it. 😊

Leelee08 ❤️❤️❤️ 8y
TheSpinecrackersBookClub Wowie!! I LOVE this. 8y
BookishMarginalia Have you read the 8th edition of the MLA Handbook? It's so much more user friendly 8y
PurpleyPumpkin Thanks @Leelee08 & @TheSpinecrackersBookClub. 😊 @BookishMarginalia No, not the 8th edition. I'll have to check it out. 😉 8y
