The Things We Keep
The Things We Keep: A Novel | Sally Hepworth
Anna Forster is only thirty-eight years old, but her mind is slowly slipping away from her. Armed only with her keen wit and sharp-eyed determination, she knows that her family is doing what they believe to be best when they take her to Rosalind House, an assisted living facility. But Anna has a secret: she does not plan on staying. She also knows there's just one another resident who is her age, Luke. What she does not expect is the love that blossoms between her and Luke even as she resists her new life. As her disease steals more and more of her memory, Anna fights to hold on to what she knows, including her relationship with Luke. Eve Bennett, suddenly thrust into the role of single mother to her bright and vivacious seven-year-old daugher, finds herself putting her culinary training to use at Rosalind house. When she meets Anna and Luke, she is moved by the bond the pair has forged. But when a tragic incident leads Anna's and Luke's families to separate them, Eve finds herself questioning what she is willing to risk to help them. Eve has her own secrets, and her own desperate circumstances that raise the stakes even higher. With huge heart, humor, and a compassionate understanding of human nature, Sally Hepworth delivers a page-turning novel about the power of love to grow and endure even when faced with the most devastating of obstacles. You wont forget this book.

This book was outstanding! It is not a book I would have picked up, but I am so glad my book club decided to read it! As I was reading it, I was worried that it would have a very sad ending. I have to I have hopeful and it was beautiful. There are very sad themes... but.. juat read it. The writing was seamless and the story flowed.

The only issue with visiting the Library and getting a stack of great books is; which to read first??

When I saw today‘s #readingresolutions prompt, a book that I just decided NOT to read came to mind. It deals with Alzheimer‘s and since I‘m now struggling with my own mother and her own #memory problems, I just couldn‘t do it. I‘ve heard it‘s excellent tho. Just to close to home right now.

raelaschoenherr Totally hear you! I did read this, but both of my maternal grandparents have had Alzheimer‘s and dementia, so it hit close to home for me too. 6y
Bostonmomx2 @raelaschoenherr we haven‘t gotten either diagnosis at this point but I do think it‘s coming. So far it‘s just difficulty recalling words/names and then forgetting she already told me something. Stuff like that. It‘s really frustrating. 6y
MidnightBookGirl I work 2 jobs, weekends at the bookstore, but during the week I work for a private care company, and most of my clients have had cognitive impairment. My current client that I've had for 4 years has dementia. Its so much harder on the families, and if you ever need an ear to bend just let me know! ❤ 6y

Books about Alzheimer's can be heartbreaking. I've only read Still Alice and Goodbye, Vitamin so far and both hold to that fact. Anyone read the others? #90sinjuly #whereismymind

Cinfhen I read Still Alice and The Things we Keep....both were good, but so sad. My post is similar to yours...I thought of books that deal with early onset dementia & Alzheimer's 💔 7y
Purrfectpages @Cinfhen yes I wasn't sure which direction to go in. It's the first thing that came to mind though. 7y

4⭐️ "How can you love someone you don't remember" Uplifting and heartwarming story about Anna, who's suffering from early stage Alzheimer's. She goes in a retirement centre for her own safety and she meet Luke, the only younger person there with dementia. We then slowly sees them drifting through their illness and their love.

A selection of possibilities for the #readathon . Up front warning: I am not reading for 24 hours. So not even close to that hardcore. @DeweysReadathon

I honestly loved this book! It was a tug on your heartstrings in more than one way, but worth it!
Alzheimer's scares me to death. I don't wish that on anyone. I can't imagine what it would be to experience that decline. This book gives you a beautiful yet heartbreaking view of just that.

An emotional, heartfelt, and uplifting read about love, loss, and dementia that is told from the point of view of three different characters (all of whom I loved). An obviously well-researched book that I finished in just 24 hours.
