School's First Day of School
School's First Day of School | Adam Rex, Christian Robinson

It's the first day of school at Frederick Douglass Elementary and everyone's just a little bit nervous, especially the school itself. What will the children do once they come? Will they like the school? Will they be nice to him? The school has a rough start, but as the day goes on, he soon recovers when he sees that he's not the only one going through first-day jitters.

Not the biggest fan of school goes to school. It seems like a book to read to kids who sent like school to make them like school but I dont see how that would work at all. There is too much unused space in the pictures as well.

The school creaked. “Children?” “All kinds of children. They‘ll come to play games and to learn.”

I didn‘t know what to think of this book at first but the more I read the better I thought it was. How cool of an idea to write a book on the first day of school from the schools perspective??!

Published in 2016 by Roaring Book Press. I think this book would be so fun to read to a kindergarten class on their first day. The story is very simple & would be something for them to think about. It would make them think from the schools point of view rather than just their own. The illustrations are also very childlike.

Janitor nodded. “That‘s true. But you get to be a school. That‘s lucky. And the school thought he was probably right about that.

I really enjoyed this and it would be perfect to read on the first day of school to let kids know they‘re not alone if they‘re apprehensive about going to school.

The pictures really added to the story because the doors had a face on them to help children picture the school being alive. It shows beyond the story what is happening. The pictures follow the text seamlessly.

I love this story because of the unusual perspective that the author uses. The story made me think about something that I‘ve never even considered in life. I love how it put real feelings and emotions into a non living object.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this part!!
“In the beginning I didn‘t know what I was, I thought I was your house” “But you get to be a school. That‘s lucky”
“And the school thought he was probably right about that”
This sort of character development is so heartwarming. I think kids will be able to relate to this story by finding their own purpose in life.

This first page really sets the tone for the story! I loved considering the actual school as one of the main characters in the story. It was a different way to view the story and this illustration perfectly captures the heart and soul of the book by giving purpose to the school!

Published in 2016, this story is about a school who finds their true purpose! The authentic images remind me of my elementary school and how warm, fun, and welcoming it was. That specific fact really drew me into the book and I loved reading from the schools view at some points. The integration of the schools emotions was a great and different way to tell the story!

A very cute book and so clever! I love the point of view in this book. I‘ve never read a book like this before and I bet children would think it is really special. It would be really neat to read this to kids on the first day of school.

1. Ravenclaw
2. All but one book- and I took English lit classes for fun
3. The Scarlet Letter, most likely because of the amazing teacher I had
4. The Great Gatsby- the only book I didn‘t finish when it was assigned (and finally read as an adult and still hate it)
5. Hmmm... I read so many classic novels that I really don‘t know

1. I loved psychology class. When in college any of my Speech/language classes were interesting. 2. Gym. We had these one piece gym suits that were so humiliating you didn‘t want to be seen. Horrible. 3 I was a cheerleader and got a lot of leeway in classes because we‘d always leave early for away games. 4. Hawks. #HelloThursday

I did not think a 40-page picture book would have me LOLing, then choking up 2 pages later. Highlights: the kindergartners reciting their names during carpet time ("Aiden, and a Max, and a Bella, and another Aiden, and an Emma, and a Caiden, and a Chloe..."), and the school's sarcastic fretting about lunchtime ("At twelve o'clock the school was filled with food. At twelve thirty the school was filled with garbage.").

"School's First Day of School" by Adam Rex, Illustrated by Christian Robinson. When I read the title of this book, I fell in love. I like that this book is a nice twist on what it's like on the first day of school by bringing the school buildings to life. In this book actual school buildings are having first day jitters. As the day goes on these school buildings find out that they aren't a lone and that everyone has first day jitters.

Dbenford This book is so cute and great for ice breakers on the first week of school. The strategies that you could use for this book are RA, S and PR. The link that I found was https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Schools-First-Day-of-School-Back-to-.... The UDL and ELL strategy I chose was 3.1 (Activate or supply background knowledge) 7y
Dbenford and 30 (Encourage the use of diagrams and drawings as aids to identify concepts and seeing relationships) #UCFLAE3414F17 7y
JocelynNolton I read the title like 10 times before I got it lol. This does sound like an interesting way to tackle the 1st day of school! I agree with you about using it as an icebreaker and I like the worksheets that you linked. 7y
DrSpalding I own this one. There was a lot of talk on Twitter. It's a great book for reading aloud at the beginning of school. 7y

This book by Adam Rex is a relatable F RA created with the help of illustrator Christian Robinson. It's the first day of school and everyone is nervous about how it will go, including the school itself! Just as we all felt, school doesn't know what to expect on the first day. After a few setbacks, it soon finds out that it's not the only one with first day jitters! This is a great book to read, of course, on the first day. It helps let children

alyssahp know they are not alone and it is fun to see that even the school was nervous! https://us.macmillan.com/schoolsfirstdayofschool/adamrex/9781596439641/ is great because UDL 3.2 & EL 30 is met by understanding the big ideas and drawing aids to prove so.

I expected more from this because I'm a big fan of Adam Rex (True Meaning of Smekday; Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich; Chloe and the Lion; etc) and illustator Christian Robinson created the art in the wonderful Last Stop on Market Street. This story about an anthropomorphized new school named for Fredrick Douglass falls a little flat but it's still a pick. Kindergarten students are probably the best audience. #picturebook

With a teacher for a mother I get subjected to many picture books and this one was a pain to get from the library... I thought she was going to break into our admin centre for this one.... I loved it though and told her that if her school started to talk to her that she should run. And yes... This is all for her first week of school... Spaghetti challenge anyone?
