Natural Causes
Natural Causes | James Oswald
A young girl's mutilated body is discovered in a room that has lain sealed for the last sixty years. Her remains are carefully arranged in what seems to have been a macabre ritual. For newly appointed Edinburgh Detective Inspector Tony McLean, this baffling cold case ought to be a low priority, but he is haunted by the young victim and her grisly death. Meanwhile, the city is horrified by a series of bloody killingsdeaths for which there appears to be neither rhyme nor reason, and which leave Edinburgh's police at a loss. McLean is convinced that these deaths are somehow connected to the terrible ceremonial killing of the girl, all those years ago. It is an irrational theory. And one that will lead McLean closer to the heart of a terrifying and ancient evil . . . Natural Causes is a chilling and exciting start to a brand new series of mysteries: The Detective Inspector MacLean novels.

In Edinburgh, several gruesome murders, a spate of public suicides, a possible demon, a couple interesting women, a string of robberies, an obstructionist superior, and a missing girl are keeping DI McLean awake nights. Or maybe it's that the grandmother who raised him has just died. All in all he has his hands full and I was quite interested to watch this come together.

My #WeekendReading is Natural Causes (tagged); very dark and gruesome, but I‘m enjoying it so far. It‘s hard for me to inhale a book this dark, but I should finish it this weekend. #TartanNoir

Sunset last night! This past week we had a 50F degree day, followed by a night of rain, then sleet, and finally heavy snow for the afternoon/evening, totaling 7 inches. It‘s currently 9F and blowing up a stink out there—coming from the north no less.

I really enjoyed this story. The 1st book in a series, it‘s like Stuart McBrides Logan McCrae series but with a touch of the supernatural. DI Tony McLean is newly promoted & swimming in open cases when he‘s ordered to a body found in a house that‘s being renovated. The body of a young girl ritually murdered 60yrs ago is found & the murder is proving to have much more recent connections to the deaths of some powerful men. Can‘t wait to get Bk2!

MayJasper Sounds interesting 👍 5y

Up next is the 1st book in a series set in Edinburgh. DI McClean is called to his first body after making Inspector. A young girl has been nailed to the floor & all her internal organs removed & put in jars. But it seems it was done at least 60yrs ago, in a ritual supposed to confer immortality on the men involved. When murders start to happen now, McClean is convinced there‘s a connection. Sounds interesting, plus it‘s Scotland🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Bk11 in my #LibraryHaul is the first book in a new to me series. Set in Edinburgh, it starts with the discovery of a girls body, walled up in the basement of an old mansion. She had been brutally murdered, her organs removed & placed in jars sixty years ago in an attempted recreation of a ceremony to confer immortality on the men who killed her. DI McLean thinks it connects to a series of suicides & the recent murder of a businessman.

Crazeedi Is this a good series? I'm always looking for a long running series to read! 5y

Another book from one of my favourite series is available for 99p today on Amazon. This is the first book in the Inspector McLean Series set in Edinburgh. These have a little bit of a supernatural element in them. Well worth checking out.
Another for our short series list @Cinfhen 😂 You can never have too many series on the go. 😳

Another favorite Scottish mystery writer with a bit of humor and supernatural in his novels. I have read these 4 and he just finished his 8th one. They are Inspector Tony McLean police procedurals. Tony has adopted Mrs. McCutheon‘s cat who personally communicates with Tony at times. Books do have a dark undertone and a touch of evil but are very enjoyable reads that should not be missed.

I read this as a Group Read and as an author new to me, based around a newly promoted detective in Edinburgh. I have to say I think I have found a new and good author who put together an excellent story, with bodies dropping all over the place based on events in the past. It had all the markings of a 4.5 star rating. However the ending with it's supernatural element just let it down a touch for me. I will continue with the series however.

I've been in a bit of a reading slump the last couple months. I only read 3 books in November, so I'm trying to be realistic with my goals for December. Hopefully, I can read more than just these, but I'll start here.

Excellent mystery full of twists and turns. Love the juxtaposition of cold case with current murders. Will definitely be reading the rest of the series!
