Cater Street Hangman
Cater Street Hangman | Anne Perry
"An ingenious mystery and an excellent example of manners and caste systems of the Victorian era."THE CHATTANOOGA TIMESWhile the Ellison girls were out paying calls and drinking tea like proper Victorian ladies, a maid in their household was strangled to death. The quiet and young Inspector Pitt investigates the scene and finds no one above suspicion. As his intense questioning causes many a composed facade to crumble, Pitt finds himself couriously drawn to pretty Charlotte Ellison. Yet, a romance between a society girl and so unsuitable a suitor was impossible in the midst of a murder....

I can‘t believe I just learned of Anne Perry‘s passing today. I know the teenage murder conviction and subsequent movie cast a shadow over her career, but I loved her early Thomas & Charlotte Pitt books and the William Monk series. The conspiracy plot lines in both got old around the 20-30th books , but I think I may need to reread the first few again now.

JamieArc I learned of this the day that it happened and was surprised that I didn‘t see more about this on Litsy. 12mo
DGRachel @JamieArc I didn‘t see anything anywhere. I was trying to decide on TV or a movie to watch and mentioned to my mom that I wish they had done more films after Cater Street, which I loved, and she told me she‘d died. 12mo
Mollyanna I had no idea. I read one of her Christmas mysteries every holiday season. I have the first Pitt book, so I may have to move it up the TBR. I wonder how many she left waiting for publication. 12mo

My first Ann Perry book and liking in so far, I am waiting for the resolution of the crimes to see if I add all her books to my Tbr...

catsuit_mango And another mention of the Prince of Wales had me drawing a family tree from Victoria to William just to understand which prince of Wales we are talking about this time (not the same as in Mrs dalloway ;)) 2y

4✨This is not normally the time period or style of writing I gravitate towards, but I have to say I really enjoyed this one! While the characters were very concerned with their own well being then others the man characters grew on me that I want to continue the series. I had my suspicions of two people and neither of them was the killer. When the killer was revealed I had to stop and process for a while. Read for #Lmpbc #GroupM @suvata

Jadams89 Agreed. I was really surprised. 2y

This one was good… I do like Anne Perry as a writer and she gets a good feel of the the time period. Not too many twists and turns but I thought the ending was good. Will get this in the mail by next week before Thanksgiving!

#Top20Series #20Series20Days #Day17

There‘s no way I can leave Charlotte and Thomas Pitt off this list. I have not read all of these, and I‘ve jumped around a bit. The first book from this series that I read was one of the later ones, as I didn‘t realize it was from a series. I corrected that by going back to the beginning. Complex mysteries, dense plots, enjoyable, but not light reading. And yes, I know there‘s a Monk book in the picture.

Andrew65 Another popular series. 4y
CaitlinR Thanks for the reminder. Need to go back to these. 4y
ValerieAndBooks I used to be a big fan of these (and the Monk books). I think I stopped picking them up when I started having babies and no time to read. I‘d probably have to start all over again! 4y

#20series20days Day 14. I couldn‘t pick one out of the 3 Anne Perry series I read. To me they are pretty equal in terms of character development, atmosphere and mystery.

Tove_Reads On my TBR! 4y
Andrew65 Another series I need to read. 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! This was a buddy read with my mom and I so enjoyed it. Looking forward to continuing the series!!
Also: Grandmama and the Vicar can go jump in a bog. They suck. Full review coming soon on YouTube channel: Joyous Jabbers.

Another reread for me! I loved this much more than my previous read a few months ago; I‘m so glad I reread and plan to continue with the series.

I initially didn‘t care for the men controlling the women but this time I read thru the lens of the time and place (England 1881) and enjoyed it so much. This first book is where Charlotte and Thomas Pitt get together-not a spoiler b/c the series is named after them. The killer+motive was shocking to me!

This was a super slow start for me although I‘m glad I made myself hang in there because I was enjoying it quite a bit by the end. I like the cop Thomas Pitt very much! I dislike Charlotte‘s family so much-hopefully they‘ll grow on me if I continue the series. I understand the author was representing social and gender norms of the 1880‘s but OH MY GOSH the women-as-weak attitude of the men drove me crazy.

Audio narrated by Davina Porter is 💯.

I bought a giant box of used books a couple of months ago and this entire series (minus one, I think) was in there. Score!? So I‘m giving this one a try. #fridayreads

I‘m working in my kitchen this morning so I grabbed the audiobook because Davina Porter narrates. I loooove listening to her read.

One of the things I really love about Goodreads is that they send me emails when something on my TBR list is on sale. My Kindle is full of books to read! 😊 #BookSale #Kindle

batsy I really liked this one! 6y
ReviewsbytheMrs I love that too! 💜 6y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook Wait, what? How do you get Goodreads to do that? 6y
GypsyKat @MommyWantsToReadHerBook I think you can go into settings and change your email preferences. It might be easier to do on a computer than on your phone app though. 6y

Excellent historical mystery! Can't wait to read the next in the series! Will I read all 30? Not sure, but I definitely want more!
Have you read any of Anne Perry's books?

In this series of mysteries, Detective Thomas Pitt has to solve murders usually involving the upper class. His wife, Charlotte assists him with these investigations by gaining access to the upper echelons of society through her connections. One of the connections is Vespasia Cumming-Gould, the formidable, witty, intelligent, elderly aunt of her sister's first husband. #seniorcitizens #anditsaugust

This was a cozy Victorian mystery. 🤗 I didn't care for the romance storyline, I rarely do, but I also recognize I'm a cold fish in that respect.

batsy I liked this one too. 7y
Tamra @batsy have you read more in the series? 7y
batsy @Tamra I think I read a few but I can't recall much about it. I felt this one was the best. I preferred her William Monk series. 7y
Tamra @batsy I wondered about that series, thanks I'll try it! 7y

I love murder mysteries and this is the series that started my love. I freely admit that I judged these books by the cover, as I saw one on display that caught my eye. Then I discovered it was part of a series and I had to read them. #death #junebookbugs

More kickaass female writer fun. Going Victorian this time with Anne Perry and her Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series. Good mystery, little bit of romance, and I love when a Victorian woman takes things into her own hands and solves the mystery.

#mysteriouslove I love Anne Perry's Charlotte and Thomas Pitt mysteries. The stories are excellent, but I also love the dynamic between the couple. I generally borrow these from the library, but I have a few on my Kindle. #17booklove

ValerieAndBooks I loved these so much when they first came out. Then kids got in the way and I stopped being able to keep up with the series. Now I'm tempted to re-read and then pick up where I left off! 7y

I loved this book and it has sparked a long love of Thomas and Charlotte Pitt. It's part mystery, part Downton Abbey. Definitely worth trying although only die hard fans will want to continue the whole series. It's like 30 books long so think twice if you're someone who has to finish any series you start.
