That Can Be Arranged
That Can Be Arranged: A Muslim Love Story | Huda Fahmy
Chaperones, suitors, and arranged marriages aren't only reserved for the heroines of a Regency period romance novel. They're just another walk in the park for this leading lady who is on a mission to find her leading lad. From the brilliant comics Yes, I'm Hot in This, Huda Fahmy tells the hilarious story of how she met and married her husband. Navigating mismatched suitors, gossiping aunties, and societal expectations for Muslim women, That Can Be Arranged deftly and hilariously reveals to readers what it can be like to find a husband as an observant Muslim woman in the twenty-first century. So relevant in today's evolving cultural climate, Fahmy's story offers a perceptive and personal glimpse into the sometimes sticky but ultimately rewarding balance of independent choice and tradition.

I picked up this book at the library because I had been reading Huda Fahmy‘s webcomic and wanted to see how she and her husband met. I was surprised to find that this is not a comic, but partially text narration and partially comics/illustrated. It works surprisingly well! This book is funny, charming, and touching. I really liked seeing how Fahmy‘s faith affects her life. And the love story is so sweet! It helps that they are both nerds like me!

Clare-Dragonfly I was initially looking for a page that referenced Pride & Prejudice for my review photo, but I loved this advice from “Dr. Love” so much that when I came across it again looking for that page, I picked it instead. 1y

I haven‘t even started reading this book and I already think it‘s super cute from the thick pink cover 😆

AlaMich The title sounds ominous! 😳 1y
Clare-Dragonfly @AlaMich It does! 😂 The thing that can be arranged is a marriage, though. It‘s very sweet and funny! 1y

This was such a cute graphic memoir detailing the talented author‘s experience as a visible Muslim who had an arranged marriage. It explains a lot about what that actually means for her, though she is careful to state that this is HER experience and others may be different. #ISpyBingo: scarf

I read both That Can Be Arranged and Oddball last night. I learned some things about Islam and arranged marriages from the first, and I found the second to be sometimes quite relatable, even though I‘m not the target demographic and had to google some slang terms. Both books made me smile.

I really enjoyed this light-hearted comic about finding a soul mate. Honest, funny, expressive and informative, Huda Fahmy tells us what it was like trying to find love whilst staying true to the traditions of her faith. A sweet book to read ❤

Yuki_Onna Although I'm no big fan of religion - any religion, that is; I don't mean any offense 🙏 - that book/story sounds so cute! ❤ 4y
RaeLovesToRead @Yuki_Onna it's really heart warming! I'm not religious myself, but it was nice to find out more about Muslim traditions as well as enjoying the author's sense of humour 😊 4y

@zezeki posted about this book yesterday so I borrowed it from Hoopla and read it. It really is so cute and romantic. I also found it educational.

zezeki Glad you liked it! 😄😄 5y
LibrarianRyan She has a new one coming out that was fun as well. I just can not remember the title. 5y
Sace @zezeki It was so cute! I loved their nerdy courtship! 5y
Sace @LibrarianRyan oh cool! I saw another one of hers, but Hoopla didn't have it 😔 5y
LibrarianRyan @Sace that one is fun too. She also has a web comic I believe but don‘t quote me. I‘ve been sent them as galleys. 5y

Super adorable with a fabulous message of self-worth.
Also, Jane Austen was low-key Muslim 😂

Since we have to be closed to foot traffic in the shop right now, we took the opportunity to do inventory. While scanning every book in the shop, I came across this and knew it was coming home with me. These drawings are so freakin‘ cute!

Patchshank I love her comics. I follow her on Instagram. I've never bought or have come across any of her books though. 5y

It was full of comic art, but not quite a comic. It‘s part comic, part nonfiction book about how pre-arranged marriages work, and part biography about Huda‘s specific experience. I enjoyed every page. I loved seeing a positive book about arranged marriage, and a positive experience with the comic interludes. Over all i think this was well done, funny, and heartwarming.

Chrissyreadit I typically have a hard time with arranged marriages, having had friends married too young and with years of sadness. But I did have one friend who seems happy in her arranged marriage almost 30 years later. 5y
SandraPreuss I follow her Instagram and love it. This book seems like it would be cute (at least judging by the cover) and I know it will have some funny comic strips because that's what she usually draws and posts on her Instagram. I never thought it as an option for the #readharder challenge for some reason but it could work for “graphic memoir“ and “read a memoir by someone from a religious tradition that is not your own“. 5y
LibrarianRyan @SandraPreuss that I believe is the place I put it. this is the second book of hers that I have read and I have loved them both 5y

This graphic novel was a delightful read – informative, served up with a side of humor. If you have wondered what dating is like in the Muslim world this book is for you. The illustrations throughout the book are really cute.
