She Came to Slay
She Came to Slay: The Life and Times of Harriet Tubman | Erica Armstrong Dunbar
17 posts | 17 read | 21 to read
In the bestselling tradition of The Notorious RBG comes a lively, informative, and illustrated tribute to one of the most exceptional women in American historyHarriet Tubmana heroine whose fearlessness and activism still resonates today. Harriet Tubman is best known as one of the most famous conductors on the Underground Railroad. As a leading abolitionist, her bravery and selflessness has inspired generations in the continuing struggle for civil rights. Now, National Book Award nominee Erica Armstrong Dunbar presents a fresh take on this American icon blending traditional biography, illustrations, photos, and engaging sidebars that illuminate the life of Tubman as never before. Not only did Tubman help liberate hundreds of slaves, she was the first woman to lead an armed expedition during the Civil War, worked as a spy for the Union Army, was a fierce suffragist, and was an advocate for the aged. She Came to Slay reveals the many complexities and varied accomplishments of one of our nations true heroes and offers an accessible and modern interpretation of Tubmans life that is both informative and engaging. Filled with rare outtakes of commentary, an expansive timeline of Tubmans life, photos (both new and those in public domain), commissioned illustrations, and sections including Harriet By the Numbers (number of times she went back down south, approximately how many people she rescued, the bounty on her head) and Harriets Homies (those who supported her over the years), She Came to Slay is a stunning and powerful mix of pop culture and scholarship and proves that Harriet Tubman is well deserving of her permanent place in our nations history.

⭐️⭐️⭐️½

This would be a great book to gift to a teenager or young adult, for it contains more information about Harrriet Tubman than the average high school history class and is presented in a highly accessible manner. Harriet Tubman's contribution to history cannot be overstated, as it extends far beyond her work on the Underground Railroad. Here, her story is accompanied by photographs, documents, and artwork depicting key moments of her life.

So glad I read this. I learned about Tubman in school but thought it was about time to revisit her life as an adult. Her courage and sacrifice is still astonishing.

Learning about Harriet Tubman. First and foremost - the name she was born with wasn‘t Harriet! It was Araminta. Her nickname was Minty.

Harriet Tubman has always been a favorite person in history for me. This is a #blameitonlitsy book, & thank you to @Texreader for gifting it to me during your giveaway! I learned so much about Tubman‘s life without reading a long biography. Great illustrations & rare photos add to the story.

Just got a #bookhaul! My wonderful preschool class gave me a gift card for teacher appreciation week, and instead of stretching it out for months in my usual custom, I ordered a pile of books the same day. I can‘t wait to take a bath and dig in.

short, sweet and to the point with a personal tone. what i enjoyed most, is that is elaborated more the “softer“ side of harrier tubman. we all know and appreciate harriet tubman's strength and bravery but it's hard to see the inspiration for that strength beginning with her grandmother's arrival on american soil.

An incredible recounting of Tubman's life from her grandmother who was brought to the U.S. in the slave trade to her escape from slavery, involvement in the Underground Railroad & Civil War, & her later years as a landowner in Upstate New York as well as a Women's / Civil Right's advocate. Learned a lot more about this incredible woman than I ever did in school. And I highly recommend the audiobook, as the writing & narration are very engaging.

An accessible biography of an extraordinary woman. This accounting covers the full span of Tubman‘s life, from her birth in slavery & the traumas & injuries she was subjected to, to her own escape, to her remarkable decision to return repeatedly to rescue family & friends, through her work for the Union army (and the fight for recompense that followed), all the way to her second marriage & final days.
The audio has great narration. #ALC

Geenie What is ALC... nice 👍 review 💖 (edited) 5y
akaGingerK @Geenie Advance Listener Copy - an ARC, but as an audiobook. Though as is often the case with me, by the time I finished, the book had been published 5y

I loved Armstrong Dunbar‘s “Never Caught,” and this one is great too. This adult nonfiction story of the life of Harriet Tubman focuses on her escaping slavery, rescuing enslaved people, and her work during the Civil War as a nurse and spy, as well as her work for women‘s rights and care-taking for elderly people of color.

Overall I liked the easy-to-read format, larger text and illustration.

#Audiobaking

I have only ever heard of Harriet's work on the underground railroad, but in the scheme of her amazing life, that was such a small part of the good she did! As a nurse and spy during the Civil War she was an important part of history. She baked all through the night (50 pies or more). I had no idea of the limits and delays the Emancipation Proclamation played, nor the advocating work done until her death. Amazing, amazing woman!
