The Devil You Know
The Devil You Know | Mike Carey

Felix Castor is a freelance exorcist, and London is his stamping ground. It may seem like a good ghostbuster can charge what he likes and enjoy a hell of a lifestyle--but there's a risk: Sooner or later he's going to take on a spirit that's too strong for him. While trying to back out of this ill-conceived career, Castor accepts a seemingly simple ghost-hunting case at a museum in the shadowy heart of London--just to pay the bills, you understand. But what should have been a perfectly straightforward exorcism is rapidly turning into the Who Can Kill Castor First Show, with demons and ghosts all keen to claim the big prize. That's OK: Castor knows how to deal with the dead. It's the living who piss him off...

Doing a bit of audiobook knitting today. Mike Carey is also M.R. Carey, the author of The Girl With All The Gifts. He also worked on some of the Hellblazer (John Constantine) comics. The Devil You Know is the first in the Felix Castor urban fantasy series. Felix is an exorcist living and working in London. Love this series.

1) fast zombies. I'm not very fast, I want to be able to out-hobble the zombies.
2) I honestly can't think of one, unless Frankenstein's monster is considered a zombie then that. I have read more books with zombies as minor characters (tagged) or zombies as the big bad out there to slay.
3) Virus/bacterial infection of some sort. Is there a book where it's a bacterial infection that starts the zombie apocalypse?

Caroline2 Yeah I think World War Z is a virus 🦠 2y
ravenlee Rebecca Zanetti‘s Scorpius series (prequel novella tagged) has a virus decimate the American population (it‘s unclear in the first few books about the rest of the world). It‘s spread by oral contact, biting and such. I thought the first three were pretty good for romantic thrillers, but had to quit because reading about a pandemic and a homicidal sociopathic president felt too close to home last year! 2y
julesG @ravenlee Thanks. Can totally relate to that. 2y
AlaMich “Out-hobble” the zombies 🤣 2y
BookmarkTavern Seanan McGuire‘s Newsflesh series has a zombifying virus. Not a great thing to read beginning of last year! 😅 Thanks for sharing! 2y

Mehso-so

I almost bailed on this. A bunch of times. It really picks up after page 200… It was a long time to stick around but it did pay off. Freelance exorcist Felix is hired to rid an archive of a ghost, in the process he ends up in the sights of a crime syndicate. Non-standard supernatural creatures, like a loup-garou, round out the shenanigans. Idk if I will try to continue the series, the 2nd book would have to have a MUCH stronger start.

Fall morning 🍁vibes🍁

I‘m not really feeling this book, tbh. Characters are unlikable and the plot seems to be moving slow. It‘s about a cocky freelance exorcist who is supposed to be ridding an office of a ghost 👻 it just seems like a lot of time between anything supernatural or anything of merit happening..

Thank you for #WondrousWednesday @Eggs and thank you for the tags @Meaw_catlady @TheSpineView @ravenlee 🤗

1. Keep - usually! Donate - sometimes. Sell - never. Lend - often!

2. It takes me a while! I read about 300 pages a month, which sounds okay, except I read a lot of 1,000+ page books! 🙈

3. Tagged. I found it dull, but I might give it another chance.

If you haven‘t been tagged yet and you want to participate, consider yourself tagged!😁

TheSpineView Welcome! 😊 4y
Eggs Thanks for playing Dave 🌺📚👏🏻! 4y

Early morning #bookmail. Great way to start a tough day, even if the books aren't for me.

Princess-Kingofkings Isn't that the truth? I love filling my Little Free Library or mailing books to my grandkids or choosing a book for a swap as much as I enjoy receiving a new book. 💗 4y

Pickpick

I picked this up as something to tie me over till the next book in the Dresden Files. Picking a book to be a placeholder probably does any book a disservice, but we've all done it ;)
The feeling in this book is a bit darker and more bleak and the humor more deadpan and less self-depricating than in the DF, which kept me from really getting stuck in. By the last third I was hooked though and I really want to know how the new intern will work out

There's a #Zombie in this series. He's a good friend of the protagonist. He'd probably say, #MeetMeInTheDark and cold cellar, because I decay more slowly down there.

2. My aunt! She‘s a librarian and since my mom wasn‘t always around I would spend a lot of time with her or my grandma, who is also a huge reader, at the library.
3. Whenever I can catch some peace!
4. Definitely Harry Potter. Also the Alanna the Lioness series.
