She is painfully aware of her step down in circumstances,while trying to get know her violent Uncle who‘s most fascinating quality is his puppet making, his obsession. Another painful reminder was this bookmark ,BD now closed 😢

When I realized the conflict I was waiting for was probably not going to happen, I gave up. I was 100 pages in to this 180 page book. It‘s a slow burn and DARK. I skipped to the end. And wow. Dark. Glad i let myself move on.

I did leave it for the next reader in this beautiful greenhouse in Berlin.

Thought there would be more time for reading on this vacation. :(

A very quick read and so enjoyable. I love her weird, dark, gothic writing which is always very magical

This is my first Angela Carter and I think I have found a new favourite author. This kind of gothic madness is catnip for me! A tale of three children orphaned & thrown into a relative‘s care; it plays knowingly with fairytale tropes. It‘s a coming of age story about the oldest child, Melanie - with a sexual subtext (as often in fairytales) but here desire is mixed up with disgust. In so many fairytales the female child is little more than ⬇️

I have no idea why i read (and will continue to read) Angela Carter. Dark, disturbing, lovely, enthralling. As always, i finish a book of hers wondering what the heck i just read and subjected myself to...

Today is the birthday of Angela Carter.She had a way of mixing fairy tale like stories with the times she lived in.She died in her early 50s, I wonder what else she may have written.I have only read one of these 3,I guess I‘m better at adding to the stash then getting through my TBR.At least if I‘m under house arrest I‘ll have plenty to read.😀

Weird, fantastical, dark, and a little frightening. As always, Angela Carter simultaneously disturbs and fascinates me. I loved everything about this book - Carter‘s writing is impeccable, the setting (a creepy toyshop) adds so much to the story, and the characters were flawed and interesting. It‘s not a fun read, it‘s heavy and chilling. But it‘s also powerful and weirdly beautiful. Music pairing: lots of steampunk! Link in comments. ✌🏼

Been playing around making more stacks to choose from this weekend. The hubby is away the whole weekend which means total peace & quiet! Yay! I‘m loving these 40 year anniversary editions of Virago‘s Modern Classics series! Angela Carter is always a treat and I‘m already feeling enamoured with this one.

#BookMail Pt11 is the first of my new obsession, #ViragoModernClassics. With gorgeous covers & French flaps, they are absolutely beautiful. Thank you so much @SavidgeReads your flaunting of them on YouTube has given me the bug too. On order, I also have Deep Water by Patricia Highsmith, A View Of The Harbour by Elizabeth Taylor & Memento Mori by Muriel Spark. Coz I have masses of room in my library. Not.🤗

I really wanted to love this like I have loved Carter‘s short stories and dark fairy tales. So my expectations might have been too high going into this. With that being said, this didn‘t really do anything for me. Carter‘s writing is beautiful as always, but the story never got beyond being just okay. It felt a bit restrained, where I would have loved Carter to use and explore the toyshop a lot more

I‘m going on an #adventure to Copenhagen to see Sam Smith tonight! This has been my bus book, and I don‘t really know how I feel about it 😶

After staring desperately at my big mystery-birthday-box yesterday, I finally got to open it today (because it is my birthday!!!!!). And my mom has completely spoiled me. Would you look at these beauties 😍😍 I'm going to Exchange the illustrated HP to the English edition, but otherwise I'm beyond happy 😄

I'm not really sure what to think of this little book. It was magical in places and I loved the intertextuality, but somehow I couldn't fully warm up to Melanie. Hence, the story didn't grasp me completely. 🤷🏻‍♀️

We got home today and look what was waiting in the mail: my two new booksleeves!! I'm totally ready for fall and winter. 😍

It's an Angela Carter kind of day. Her second novel of strange families, toys and puppets, music and mystery and the midnight garden. An exploration of nature and the boundaries of love 🖤

Discovered this young adult gem in our school library this week. Went down for The Golden Compass and came out with this instead. Originally written in 1967, the story has a Dickensian feel to it, but the writing is timeless. I've devoured most of the book today- will most likely be done in a couple of hours. A gorgeous, dark fall down an unexpected rabbit hole. ❤️

Happy Valentine to all! I love seeing all the unwrapped presents, I really need to get in on that next time. This is what my day will look like. Got some chocolates and a card for the BF. Charity shop book haul. 3 for £1!

Saturday librarian lunch break. A coworker and I swapped Angela Carter books over a year ago-- she has my Wise Children, I got her Magic Toyshop-- and I'm running out of time to be able to read it before I return it...⏱
