I was interested in this series after seeing a little bit of the show. The comics are fast reads, but are all very interesting. I'm curious as to how the storyline will wrap up.

I read this a few years back, but wasn't that take in by it. It fell a bit flat in comparisons with Saga (which I was also reading at the time)
But the story kept hunting me... I really needed to know if these kids ever got to the bottom of what their parents were up to.
So I decided to re-read it and then jump straight into the next volume to see if it will grab me this time around.

👇🏻Continues👇🏻

Enchanted_Bibliophile I'm still not a fan of the art. This is a major info dump and I feel a bit overwhelmed in putting kids and parents together. But I'm going to stick to reading at least the next two volumes and only after that decide if I'm giving it up for good. 4y

This is a review for issues 1 through 18 of the first run of Runaways from 2003 - 2004. I recently learned this was a show on Hulu so I read issue 1 from the new run with Rainbow Rowell that started in 2017. It was interesting but I was missing a lot of backstory, so I decided to start out at the beginning. I have never consistently rated each issue of a series with only 4 or 5 stars until now. It‘s something different but very compelling, and ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 Each issue has some sort of cliffhanger. I enjoyed this very much and would highly recommend it. If you read a decent amount of comics then I‘d highly recommend Marvel Unlimited. Overall, I would rate this entire series 4.5⭐️ 4y

#comiccovercrush #7days7covers Day 6

Thank you to the wonderful @Meaw_catlady for the tag!😺

I like this cover for a couple of reasons. First, the mix of colors and shading look really cool. 😎 Also, it really captures the mood of this particular issue. Molly had always been the most spirited and upbeat member of the team, but in this issue, we learn she is much more haunted by the events of the series than she lets on.

DaveGreen7777 I ran out of Marvel related paraphernalia, so please enjoy my Finn bobble head from the Star Wars Funko series instead! Disney now produces both Marvel and Star Wars movies, so it sorta ties in! 😂 (edited) 5y
Branwen Hahahaha! That's perfect! I love your reasoning! 😂🤣 5y

And this... This did not help.

Sace So no retard is not acceptable. These were originally written in 2003. And yes, teenagers still use this word. Vaughan has actually captured teenagers which is why this is popular. I hear kids all the time that can say something sensitive in one sentence and in the next sentence say something stupid. 5y
Lauredhel @RestlessFickleBookHoarder this wasn't acceptable in 2003 either. And yes, some teenagers use slurs based on disability, race, sexuality, etc. Yet only disability slurs appear in this book, and basic four letter words are replaced with random punctuation. If the slur was the N word instead, would that be ok with a "well, it was 2003" excuse? 5y
Sace No it absolutamente wouldn't, but he was also trying to write believable characters. Some teenagers? A lot honestly. I hear it all day long (and yes I call them in it) Disability slurs from a bunch of kids who are about to get superabilities so I think it's on purpose. "Retarded" was actually west coast slang in 2003 for having fun. See history for Black Eyed Peas song "Let's Get It Started." So yeah... Even in 2003 5y
See All 15 Comments
Lauredhel @RestlessFickleBookHoarder It is not being used as "having fun". And "let's get retarded" didn't mean "let's have fun", or meant "let's get completely screwed up on alcohol /drugs ". It was also not ok then, which is why it was changed and re -recorded . And you haven't addressed my point about how (some) teens use a lot of other slurs based on marginalised groups, but somehow the disability slurs are seen as more acceptable. (edited) 5y
Lauredhel @RestlessFickleBookHoarder @RestlessFickleBookHoarder if this is the only way a writer could think of to write authentic sounding teenagers, the comic needed a better writer. Regardless, if you are gonna kick up in defence every time I challenge ableist language in literature, you are following the wrong feed. (edited) 5y
Sace I'm saying that you seem to think that in 2003 "Retarded" (any definition) had been eradicated which obviously it had not. I don't know what to tell you about teens finding it so acceptable. This series could be a perfect jumping off point for a conversation about those slurs. Maybe more acceptable because now there are diagnoses so when they use "retarded" they don't make the connection with their ADHD or autistic classmates. 5y
Sace "Retarded" is way too general for them, but they are sensitive to specific conditions. 5y
Lauredhel @RestlessFickleBookHoarder the R word has not been eradicated now. It was not "eradicated" in 2003 either. What it WAS was NOT OK. It was and is a horrific slur based on prejudice against people with disabilities. And you don't effectively challenge that sort of thing with a throwaway opening - page "joke" made by your otherwise sympathetic main characters. Not all teens find this word acceptable, by the way. Mine certainly doesn't. (edited) 5y
Sace Because you've taught him it's not acceptable. Some parents don't. I certainly hope you don't continue to read this series. I don't recall the word being used much when I read it a couple of years ago, but there are probably other problematic elements. No it was not ok then, yet I heard it A LOT more...so there has been improvements. The comics industry is usually the vanguard of social issues. That doesn't mean they get it right every time. 5y
Sace I had I kid draw a swastika on a paper he turned in to me in 2005 when I taught at a Catholic school. I'm Jewish and I'm sure his mother would have been appalled. I still found him a "sympathetic character." Kids can be assholes. True then. True now. So I'm not going to fault the author for writing them that way. 5y
SleepyDragon What age group is this written for? Grade school or YA? I could see grade school kids seeing this as condoning such language and think it is okay to use. Parents don't always read everything their kids do, and the conversation of why it isn't acceptable could come too late. 5y
Lauredhel @NeesyBeth the characters are eleven to sixteen, and one very general rule of kidlit is that kids will read two years up in character age. However, hate speech is hurtful to adults also. 5y
SleepyDragon Agreed. Hurtful to all. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. It is just that as the mom of an 11 yr old advanced reader, my first thought is how kidlit and YA will influence kids. I found your two posts worrisome, to say the least, and will be on the lookout for this comic in my son's library bag just in case a conversation is needed. Thanks for the heads up. 5y
Lauredhel @NeesyBeth I hear you, mine read early and often too. But we had already had lots of conversations about slurs vs "regular" swearing, etc. Fwiw the new series of Runaways comics seems pretty great to me so far (though it's a sequel and aged up a little) (edited) 5y
SleepyDragon Good to know, thanks. He likes comics, though for now isn't reading YA unless I've read it first. 5y

Was there really no other way of indicating that these are teenagers playing a MMPORG?

Eyelit Wait. Did Brian K Vaughn really write Captain America saying that? In a fairly recent comic, at that? I‘m deeply disappointed. 5y
Lauredhel @Eyelit no, he wrote a teenager (from Runaways, so they were supposed to be a sympathetic character) saying that while playing Cap in a RPG. Which is not really an improvement. 5y
Eyelit Yeah. It really isn‘t. Sigh. 5y

My brother‘s home from his week at our mom‘s and just opened his gifts from me, which included this tee shirt and pajama pants 🥰 Now we‘re watching the first ep of Marvel‘s Runaways together as a way of getting back to normal.

So my first book of 2018 was actually a comic!!! I learned how to take comics out on hoopla which is not my favorite way to read them but works if I don‘t want to buy it or wait for the print version from the library! I really liked this one, I‘m super into the TV show and it was cool to see what they kept and what they got rid of. Definite pick!

laurieluna Didn't realise they'd made a TV show! I went as Nico to a superhero party once....not many people guessed who I was 😂 x 6y
Alicia @miralunasbooknook awww! That‘s awesome!! Did you have the staff?! And yes! It‘s on Hulu and it‘s really good. 6y

Day 21: Multiethnic. For this I chose two comics and two prose books. Lumberjanes has a very ethnically diverse group, and while this cover doesn't show it, Runaways is too. The two books are too, Pachinko is Korean-Japanese and Funny in Farsi author married a Frenchman. #junebookbugs @RealLifeReading

Digital copies of all five volumes are $.99! This is one of my very favorite comics of ever. It's about a group of teen and preteen kids in the Marvel Universe who find out their parents are super villains and deside to thwart their parents evil plans. It's pretty much great.

If you're looking for a stereotypical teenage angsty comic, this is it. It wasn't horrible, it was just a miss for me. I think if I had read this when I was a teenager rather than a 26 year old, I would have liked it a lot more. However, some of the dialogue that is spoken by the parents was just so condescending and ridiculous...that I certainly wouldn't have liked no matter what age.

My favorite comic of all time.

Highly recommended if you love its writer, Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Y: The Last Man), its artist, Adrian Alphona (Ms. Marvel), the X-Men or Ultimate Spider-Man at their best, or if you think writing five to eight different teenagers with completely distinct voices is the most impressive thing. So funny, so surprising, so filled with cliffhangers.

Kenny The series is over ten years old and it has barely aged a day. 8y
Thessalia Great series! Brian K. Vaughan has such amazing stories in his head creating series that having staying power and completely original ideas! Thanks for sharing and reminding me how much I love this one since I tend to think of Y before all else 😄 8y
