Nazi Wives
Nazi Wives: The Women at the Top of Hitler's Germany | James Wyllie
6 posts | 5 read | 14 to read
Nazi Wives is a fascinating look at the personal lives, psychological profiles, and marriages of the wives of officers in Hitler's inner circle. Goering, Goebbels, Himmler, Heydrich, Hess, Bormannnames synonymous with power and influence in the Third Reich. Perhaps less familiar are Carin, Emmy, Magda, Margarete, Lina, Ilse and Gerda... These are the women behind the infamous mencomplex individuals with distinctive personalities who were captivated by Hitler and whose everyday lives were governed by Nazi ideology. Throughout the rise and fall of Nazism these women loved and lost, raised families and quarreled with their husbands and each other, all the while jostling for position with the Fuhrer himself. Until now, they have been treated as minor characters, their significance ignored, as if they were unaware of their husbands' murderous acts, despite the evidence that was all around them: the stolen art on their walls, the slave labor in their homes, and the produce grown in concentration camps on their tables. James Wyllie's Nazi Wives explores these women in detail for the first time, skillfully interweaving their stories through years of struggle, power, decline and destruction into the post-war twilight of denial and delusion.

Mesmerizing,in-depth reporting on the wives of some of the men in Hitler‘s inner circle: Margaret (Himmler), Lina,(Heydrich),Emmy(Goering), Gerda(Borman),Magda(Goebbels),Ilse(Hess),Lilli(de Crinis).Totally consumed with Hitler & strict adherents to Nazi ideology, each of these wives had their own unique, yet interwoven stories. They raised families, quarreled with their husbands & each other, all the while jockeying for position with Hitler. The ⬇️

kspenmoll ⬆️ author highlighted compelling evidence that these women did indeed know what was happening to the Jews. They knew the art of their walks was stolen, that slave laborers were used to work in their homes, that the food on their tables was grown in concentration camps. They knew. The author devotes chapters to the women‘s post war lives- there were trials, but often judges were Nazi sympathizers & though some were imprisoned fir short durations⬇️ 2mo
kspenmoll They all got off relatively lightly. Some published questionable accounts, letters & diaries that have since surfaced provided the author with detailed sources. I feel that this author‘s contribution to Nazi/Holocaust studies is invaluable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 2mo

#Bookedintime World War II

This is by no means an easy read, but it is a crucial viewpoint of the women behind the key Nazi/SS officers. An excellent historical record.

Saw this while browsing the local library. So much is written about the Nazis but what about the women that shared their lives? I‘m halfway through and finding this book really interesting.

Anyone read this one? I keep seeing it in bookshops and I‘m interested, but I‘m trying to read more female historians and this is... not.
