6 posts | 12 read | 9 to read
Legendary actor Val Kilmer shares the stories behind his most beloved roles, reminisces about his star-studded career and love life, and reveals the truth behind his recent health struggles in a remarkably candid autobiography. Val Kilmer has played so many iconic roles over his nearly four-decade film career. A table-dancing Cold War agent in Top Secret! A troublemaking science prodigy in Real Genius. A brash fighter pilot in Top Gun. A swashbuckling knight in Willow. A lovelorn bank robber in Heat. A charming master of disguise in The Saint. A wise-cracking gumshoe in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Of course, Batman, Jim Morrison, and the sharp-shooting Doc Holliday. But who is the real Val Kilmer? In this memoirpublished ahead of next summers highly anticipated sequel Top Gun: Maverick, in which Kilmer returns to the big screen as Tom Iceman Kazanskythe actor steps out of character and reveals his true self. Kilmer reflects on his acclaimed career, recounts his high-profile romances, chronicles his spiritual journey and reveals details of his recent throat cancer diagnosis and recoveryabout which he has disclosed little until now. While containing plenty of tantalizing celebrity anecdotes, Im Your Huckleberrytaken from the famous line Kilmer delivers as Holliday in Tombstoneis ultimately a deeply moving reflection on mortality and the mysteries of life.

Full disclosure I‘m a HUGE Val Kilmer fan and this book reads as if you‘re sitting down with him and we are tripping through his memories and what may read as disjointed or even unnecessary to some readers I found personally charming about his openness and reading insights into some of his most impressive roles. He prefers this as a pinball trip through his mind. That‘s exactly what you get and more.

Kimberlone I am very curious to watch the new documentary. While I‘ve not read the book, I think the title is 💯 3y
KristiAhlers @Kimberlone I actually watched it last night! It was really good. Perfect accompaniment to this book actually 3y
Nute I‘m a big fan of his acting accomplishments as well. This is getting stacked immediately! 3y
KristiAhlers @Nute you‘re not going to be sorry! ❤️ so good 3y

⭐️⭐️ Oof. This was not great. I loved Val Kilmer as Ice Man. And even though Batman Forever sucked, I‘ve seen it so many times because he was smokin‘ back then. Anyway, this was a lot of “be impressed by the female celebrities I‘ve boned” and “I‘m so much more talented that others.” Blah.

CampbellTaraL Ah shoot, I hate learning the actors I like are just pukey people. But thanks for reviewing! I won't feel the fomo skipping this one. 4y
MsMelissa So, essentially he sounds like his character Iceman is pretty close to his real character? 4y
Suet624 For some reason I‘m not surprised he‘s like that. 4y

britt_brooke @Book_Fiend_Melissa Pretty much! And he didn‘t initially want to be in Top Gun because he essentially thought he was too good for it. 🙄 4y
britt_brooke @taraWritesSci Me too! I‘m not surprised, but I love when a celeb feels down-to-earth. He definitely does not. (edited) 4y
britt_brooke @Suet624 Yep; not surprising at all. 4y
CBee @britt_brooke did you read the interview with him done recently? It‘s an eye opener. And not in a good way 😳😳 4y
britt_brooke @CBee No, lol 😂😂 4y
CBee @britt_brooke I am totally sending it to you. Hold tight 😂 4y
CBee @britt_brooke and, the gal who interviewed him also wrote 4y
tjwill The 90s Val Kilmer movie I used to watch over and over was The Saint (had it on VHS). And now I kind of want to go watch it. 😂😬 4y
britt_brooke @tjwill I‘ve never seen it, but my husband loves it! 4y
britt_brooke @CBee Thank you!! Wow, the last bit about his cancer and being Christian Scientist was totally bizarre. And his current appearance. He‘s trying way too hard to be artsy and weird. He just doesn‘t sound like a very nice person, idk. Super odd. 4y
mom2bugnbee Well, that's disappointing. 4y
mom2bugnbee And I think that I read somewhere that he almost didn't do Top Gun b/c he originally auditioned for Maverick and wasn't cast. Could you imagine? I mean, Tom Cruise has his own issues, but could you see anyone else as Maverick & Iceman? 4y
Megabooks Blech! 4y
britt_brooke @mom2bugnbee It‘s such an iconic movie, I can‘t imagine. Although now, looking back, it‘s pretty terrible, but o used to love it. 😂 4y
britt_brooke @mom2bugnbee He thought he was above Top Gun. He‘s very into himself. Says in the book that the director was obsessed with him so he finally relented. Whatever, dude. 4y
CBee @britt_brooke totally agree! Blew me away when I read the interview. I‘m like dude, really? 😳 4y
Susanita I‘ve heard that he‘s an odd duck.If you like funny movies, though, check out his first movie Top Secret! 4y
britt_brooke @Susanita I had never heard of that one, but he talks about it in the book, how came out about the same time as the movie “Airplane” (which I have seen and loved). I need to watch it! 4y
Ruthiella @Susanita Top Secret is such a great spoof and Kilmer is such a perfect wink wink in on the joke actor in it! 😀 4y
Bookzombie I‘m not so surprised about his “I‘m more talented” attitude. I think I must have heard that before. When I was a kid I loved Real Genius and Willow, but later it was definitely The Saint that I watched. @tjwill The Saint is currently on Hulu if you have it. 😉 4y
britt_brooke @Bookzombie Y‘all are making me want to watch The Saint! 4y
tjwill @Bookzombie I actually have it on DVD, lol! 😁 4y
Bookzombie @tjwill I do too! Lol. 4y

He prefaces this saying it's a pinball journey through his mind. And it is. It's here, there and everywhere as we're bounced around with a lot of talk about Cher and Brando. I listened to it, and I wish it was only Mare Winningham reading. She read with emotion since she knew him best. Too much superficial stuff and it's too bad he didn't go deeper for some things he talked about. Overall I enjoyed it.

KarouBlue Perfectly described! 4y

Started listening to this today. It's too bad to not hear it read in his own voice, but completely understandable as to why not.

britt_brooke Curious to hear what you think of this one! I‘m on the fence about reading it. 4y

Mehso-so

I do so love a name-dropping celerity memoir. The book feels like it was written stream of conscious style, so not the best writing. But a very satisfying amount of name dropping. Perfect read for a readathon weekend. #ARC #Edelweiss #24B4Monday
