Morning in the Burned House
Morning in the Burned House | Margaret Atwood
13 posts | 8 read | 28 to read
These beautifully crafted poems - by turns dark, playful, intensely moving, tender, and intimate - make up Margaret Atwood's most accomplished and versatile gathering to date, " setting foot on the middle ground / between body and word." Some draw on history, some on myth, both classical and popular. Others, more personal, concern themselves with love, with the fragility of the natural world, and with death, especially in the elegiac series of meditations on the death of a parent. But they also inhabit a contemporary landscape haunted by images of the past. Generous, searing, compassionate, and disturbing, this poetry rises out of human experience to seek a level between luminous memory and the realities of the everyday, between the capacity to inflict and the strength to forgive.

I picked this up after Louise Penny credited it as the poetry she uses for Ruth Zardo in the Three Pines series. I‘ll admit some went above my head, but some was actually pretty approachable and touching. #BookspinBingo #wintergames2020 #crushtherush #readyourway #readnosereindeer

Another poem for your Tuesday from the brilliant Margaret Atwood. Friendly reminder that we don‘t actually own anything the earth provides and Mother Nature could take it away at any moment. #poetry

L. G. Cullens Have you read The Overstory by Richard Powers? It might appeal to your sensibilities? It did mine and the writing was above reproach.

I'm currently reading Eager by Ben Goldfarb and finding it engrossing, even though as a naturalist I already know much of the story matter.

These and a few other such books help me to believe there is some wisdom in our weedy species :-)

This is a book of poetry by Atwood, exploring the theme of torture, in particular the torture of women, through the retelling of myths such as Cressida, and Helen of Troy. The above is part of the poem ‘Helen of Troy Does Countertop Dancing‘. You can read the rest of the poem here: https://m.poemhunter.com/poem-amp/helen-of-troy-does-countertop-dancing/

I didn't know Margaret Atwood until last year, when I read The Handmaid's Tale, which is one of the greatest books I have ever come across. The more I learn about her, the more I admire her strength and the power she bestows upon all of us women through her words. You are a goddess, ma'am. You make me feel like one too. Today is our day. .

Jan. 18: In The Secular Night. I think her poetry is so much better than her prose. 😲🙂#LitsyPoetry365

Tis the season for all things spooky. ?

I've been listening to the Lore podcast lately for some spooky folklore & came across a cool literary fact. Episode 12, "Half-Hanged," discusses Mary Webster, an alleged witch in 1600s Massachusetts who was hanged but didn't die. Margaret Atwood claims to be a descendent of her & wrote this poem, "Half-Hanged Mary" & dedicated The Handmaid's Tale to her. ??

Links in comments.

Bookishaf Such a good episode! I love Lore! 8y

BibliOphelia I went to school at UMass and have spent a lot time in Hadley over the years. I also worked at an Indie bookstore and started a literary festival in Salem (which is where my dad was born & grew up), so I can't help but love these witchy connections! 8y
This_Accidental_Hipster Damn that quote is incredible. One of those sentences that can be strung up with different meanings and scenarios 8y
