The Doll
The Doll: The Lost Short Stories | Daphne Du Maurier
Du Maurier is in a class by herself. New York Times Perhaps best known for her immortal gothic masterwork Rebeccathe basis for the Academy Award-winning motion picture directed by Alfred HitchcockDaphne de Maurier began her illustrious writing career penning short stories. In The Doll, thirteen of du Mauriers early shorter fictional works have been collectedeach story written before the authors twenty-third birthday and some in print for the first time since the 1930s. Compelling tales of human foibles and tragic romance, the stories in The Doll represent the emergence of a remarkable literary talent who later went on to create Jamaica Inn, The Birds, and other classic works. This breathtaking collection of short fiction belongs on the bookshelf of every Daphne du Maurier fan.

I really enjoyed this collection of obsessive-love short stories. Reading of Du Maurier‘s own early life with an obsessive father and a neglectful mother, her own need for freedom from them adds a extra dimension to these tales. #AuthorAMonth #DaphneDuMaurier

Compared to The Birds and Other Stories, I didn‘t particularly like this collection of short stories. There are very few that stuck with me upon finishing and I found that the characters in these stories were far more abhorrent and unlike able than in other Du Maurice works. #AuthorAMonth

We've wrapped up our most recent Lite Reads pick, The Doll by Daphne du Maurier. I loved the gothic vibe and the premise but I was really not into the content. You can read my full review through the blog. Let me know in the comments what you thought of this one! New selection shortly.

Our new #LiteReads pick, chosen with the spook reading season in mind, is The Doll by Daphne du Maurier. This gothic short story was presumed lost for over seventy years but was republished as part of a collection of other lost du Maurier stories. You can find visual and audio links to read the story through the full intro post linked below. Let me know what you thought once you've read it!

Thirteen short, suspenseful stories dealing with failed love — many with a tragic, gothic feel. Fans of the Brontë sisters, Shirley Jackson, Flannery O‘Connor and of course Daphne du Maurier will most likely love it. I immediately had to read ‘The Happy Valley‘, ‘And His Letters Grew Colder‘ and ‘The Doll‘ again. #shortstories #literature #gothic

I found the perfect cozy reading nook in a possibly haunted hotel. I think Daphne du Maurier would approve.

Du Maurier is one of my favorite writers and never disappoints. My goal of reading her entire collection is going well. This is the first collection of short stories I‘ve read by her and they were interesting. This is some of her earlier work and you can tell she was in a class by herself.

Oh my goodness, Daphne du Maurier is one of my new favorites. This collection was PERFECT.

Wry humor, haunting narrative, and exceptionally flawed characters have all come together to create stories that feel so very real yet so very strange.

For fans of Agatha Christie and Shirley Jackson. I know now that I have finally read something other than The Birds, I can consider du Maurier among the best of the best. I feel a reading spree coming on!

Cathythoughts That‘s one great cover 🖤 6y
KCorter @Cathythoughts I know, right? There are some SUPER creepy ones, but I like the subtlety of this one. 6y

Book 4: I wasn‘t thrilled about Rebecca, but I ♥️ her short stories.

Last book for #4NewFavesIn4Days and I‘m tagging my 4 new Litsy friends @LiterRohde @ManyWordsLater @forevermint @seebrittread

Cinfhen Thanks for sharing and keeping the link going 🧡👍🏻🥂 7y
Simona @Cinfhen Thank you for creating such a fun #, although it was harder than I thought ... 7y
LiterRohde @Simona What‘s the tag for? 7y
Simona @LiterRohde The idea of this # is to present one of your favorite books every day. The interpretation for the new is left to you, whether it is just a book/author new to you or actually a recently released book that you like... 7y

Dark, atmospheric, in some ways even amusing, without unnecessary/forced shock elements, this stories exposing human behavior and thinking in relation to the other people. Thirteen short stories, some are excellent, some slightly awkward, but I like them all, mainly due to the excellent dynamic tension between the characters, and I can easily qualify this collection among my favorite books I've read this year.

BarbaraBB I can imagine. Her short stories are so good! 7y

She can't go wrong. All Daphne Du Maurier wrote is great and chilling. These short stories as well. Picture: My grandmother when she was a girl in the early 20th century.

Daphne Du Maurier is my girl! She's probably best known for her novel Rebecca, but her short stories are unsettling and absorbing. The "lost" short stories in this collection are consistently engaging, and will leave you feeling very uneasy. The human mind is a terrifying place! Loved this.

This was my first attempt at a short story collection. I thought it would be fun to read a story or two in between books and I'm not giving up on the idea even though these stories didn't really pull me in. Do any of my Litsy friends have short story recommendations for me?

clairelisebella Half in Love by Maile Meloy shook me to the core. One of the best collections I've stumbled upon. Lydia Davis is also a genius. 8y
