Emily has new curves and an almost-boyfriend who wants a certain kind of picture. Tabitha sees through everybodys gamesor so she tells the world. The three girls are best friends with one rule: No fighting. Can it get them through seventh grade? This year everything is different for Sherm Russo as he gets to know Bridge Barsamian. What does it mean to fall for a girlas a friend? On Valentines Day, an unnamed high school girl struggles with a betrayal. How long can she hide in plain sight? Each memorable character navigates the challenges of love and change in this captivating novel. The Horn Book, StarredStead shows how strongly love of all kinds can smooth the juddering path toward adulthood. Winsome, bighearted, and altogether rewarding. Booklist, Starred[Stead] captures the stomach-churning moments of a misstep or an unplanned betrayal and reworks these events with grace, humor, and polish into possibilities for kindness and redemption. Superb. Kirkus Reviews, StarredThis memorable story about female friendships, silly bets, different kinds of love, and bad decisions is authentic in detail and emotion. Publishers Weekly, StarredFilled with humor [and] delightful coincidences. . . . An immensely satisfying addition for Steads many fans. School Library Journal, Starred"The author as usual deftly interweaves her plot strands into an organic whole, and between the multifocal plot and the exploration on growth and self-recognition. . .deeply explores mistakes, and forgiveness, and growing away from people as well as toward them."The Bulletin, StarredThis eloquent story of friendship, first love, and identity will resonate powerfully with readers. VOYA, Perfect Ten"Stead raises questions about whether a relationship can survive change. If someone makes a mistake, can you forgive the person, if not the act? Can two people reconcile, if they are both willing to process what happened? Or is the change more systemic--has one of you become a stranger? . . . It's a question all of the characters ask themselves at some point in Stead's perfectly synchronized novel." Shelf AwarenessFrom the Hardcover edition.

"Life is where you sleep and what you see when you wake up in the morning, and who you tell about your weird dream, and what you eat for breakfast and who you eat it with. Life isn't something that happens to you. It's something you make yourself, all the time." ♥️
So much wisdom in this mg novel about growing pains, shifting friendships, first loves. Highly recommend even if you don't normally read children's lit!

Great to read YA that deals with real issues (not fringe diseases or drama situations that are unlikely to affect most teens). Goodbye Stranger examines female friendships, has some sweet and tentative romance, and also tackles the social media pressures kids face. A series of shared inappropriate selfies is the main plot focus. I so appreciated Stead‘s take on all of those things. A great book for middle school, high school, and parents.

#TBRCull - my GR list was at 632. Here‘s my first 9 to go. (Unless someone tells me I should put them back!) Back for more later!

“That‘s what life is. Life is where you sleep and what you see when you wake up in the morning, and who you tell about your weird dream, and what you eat for breakfast and who you eat it with. Life isn‘t something that happens to you. It‘s something you make yourself, all the time. Life is that half minute in the morning before your cat remembers she‘s kind of a grouch, when she pours out her love and doesn‘t give a flying newton who sees it.”

One of the narrators in this YA novel uses the second person point of view. And yes, author Rebecca Stead makes it work. I think she can do anything. 💖

I finished Goodbye Stranger with the first game of the baseball season on mute in the background. As much as I love Rebecca Stead's other books, this one was just ok for me. Like in her other books there was a mystery or twist element, but in this book I didn't find myself caring very much how it resolved. Too bad! I expected to love it.

Bette I expected to love it too. 😔 3y

Another stellar book by Rebecca Stead. Her writing is simple but powerful, and her plots always have a mind-bending twist.

I'm about halfway into "Goodbye Stranger" by Rebecca Stead and can definitely relate to some of these characters! Most of these characters are in middle school, dealing with coming of age topics such as divorce, puberty, friendship, and family. I truly feel for these characters as they navigate school and growing up. Excited to see how this ends! #ucflae3414sp17

Stead is a consistently fantastic YA author, but this one alternated between oh-so-true and a bit arch and preachy. Also, too many characters -- couldn't keep them all straight! But lots of great a-ha's and turns of phrase along the way.

Got this whole stack at Strand and Housingworks in NYC for less than $25! My daughter and I loved Rebecca Stead's first two books so I picked up Goodbye Stranger for her. She devoured it in 2 days and loved it.

Vacation Book #4: This book is as thoughtful and real as the rest of Rebecca Stead's books. Her characters remind me of E.L. Konigsburg's. Very distinct inner lives.

Saw this at the bookstore and had to recommend. I have this love affair with Rebecca Stead's books and wish she had been around when I was a middle reader. This book from last year didn't disappoint. And yes, that girl is wearing cat ears. 😻 | 🌟🌟🌟🌟
