Life and Medieval Times of Kit Sweetly
Life and Medieval Times of Kit Sweetly | Jamie Pacton
17 posts | 19 read | 29 to read
A rousing, funny, feminist workplace fantasy that also takes a frank look at modern poverty. - Kirkus Moxie meets A Knight's Tale as Kit Sweetly slays sexism, bad bosses, and bad luck to become a knight at a medieval-themed restaurant. Working as a Wench--i.e. waitress--at a cheesy medieval-themed restaurant in the Chicago suburbs, Kit Sweetly dreams of being a Knight like her brother. She has the moves, is capable on a horse, and desperately needs the raise that comes with knighthood, so she can help her mom pay the mortgage and hold a spot at her dream college. Company policy allows only guys to be Knights. So when Kit takes her brother's place, clobbers the Green Knight, and reveals her identity at the end of the show, she rockets into internet fame and a whole lot of trouble with the management. But this Girl Knight won't go down without a fight. As other Wenches and cast members join her quest, a protest forms. In a joust before Castle executives, they'll prove that gender restrictions should stay medieval--if they don't get fired first.

I tried to pick something fun and calming for before bed, but I didn't fully know what this book was about, and the nightmares of misogyny and American capitalism were strong in this one, so I stopped eight minutes in. I may go back at some point when I'm feeling less fragile and in need of comfort. It feels like some kind of progress to not feel the need to force myself to read something I'm not feeling right now. 🗡

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really like how Kit and her friends fought for equality in the workplace. It‘s modern times and females should be able to be a knight. It should not just be for males. I loved the friendships that were forged from the trainings that Kit and the other wenches did. I even enjoyed the small romance in it and was glad it didn‘t over power the story and take away from the strong message. #bookstagram #bibliophile #litsy #littens

BookFreakOut I remember hearing about this before it came out, I want to read it! 4y
The_Heeler_Booklife @BookFreakOut I definitely recommend it and it‘s a real fast read. 4y

Loved it! This contemporary YA about a teen girl who works at a medieval reenactment restaurant with her brother, uncle and friends is delightful but meaty — Kit and her family struggle with serious poverty, which influences all her decisions, as she challenges the long-standing corporate rule that men are knights and women are wenches. Great girl-power tale, with a touch of adorable romance.

I had such high hopes for this but it was such a let down. I didn‘t realize it was YA which didn‘t work. Kit is grim & her reasoning for wanting to be a knight didnt seem to matter at the end. She seemed like a bad friend & made these rules to not date her friend but she wants to break those rules early on even though we see no indication from him. Also don‘t like the casualness of teens smoking and drinking (I know it happens but i don‘t like it)

Ash.on.the.line I wanted a fun take on girls taking on jousting but this wasn‘t it for me. Also I know of actual women that joust so the plot is not strong in my opinion. Glad it‘s done for #bookspinbingo 4y

I finished two books yesterday/last night so I am already off to a great start with #bookspinbingo

Decided to try and do better about posting to Litsy and move away from Goodreads, so I am trying to figure out better ways of tracking my reading in my notebook (and places online).

The tagged book I finished last night. It was an okay read, though the characters didn‘t seem all that complex.

TheAromaofBooks Great start!!! 4y

2020 has seen a bit of a book purchase slump for me, but back on track in October with some belated birthday gifts, book group reads and must haves. I was so blessed to have #jamiepacton reach out to me on insta and send some #kitsweetly merch! #joustlikeagirl #bookstack #instabuy

I‘m moving onto an audiobook for a bit while I make breakfast and do some tidying! Loving this fiercely feminist book about a girl who wants to be a Knight at her medieval reenactment job.

I‘m so glad to have found this book. As a social worker who works with teens this will definitely be recommended to many. This is the first book that I‘ve read that really includes characters across the gender and sexuality spectrums and uses the appropriate pronouns. There‘s also a variety of races, classes, ethnicities, etc. which is refreshing to see. Loved the story and the fight for equality! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds very good! 4y

A girl works at a medieval themed restaurant and wants to be a knight but there are rules about not hiring girls for certain positions. She fights back with her friends.

This was a sweet YA about girl power. A bit angsty for my taste but the portrayal of how the working poor live was eye opening. Deciding what bills to pay, living without power, everyone supporting each other-that was my favorite part of this book.

TerriGreen I haven‘t heard of this one! Morgan may like it. 4y

This is absolutely not a bad book, but there were a lot of things I didn't like about it. What really got me questioning what was happening was how much smoking was going on. This is a 2020 YA release, I thought we were beyond that? The ex-smoker in me does not approve.

Okay so I felt myself getting frustrated A LOT but sexism, a wanker of an uncle, double standards, deadbeat dads, people using religion as a scapegoat, and atrociously expensive post-secondary does that to a bitch (me. I am bitch).

I loved the characters. The ending was sweet. The setting was fun until you had to...interact with the staff. I have so much respect for people who grow up in that level of poverty and still manage to survive.

Been in a bit of a reading funk this month. But I am hoping that being able to see the two year olds I teach this morning on a zoom circle time will help improve my mood. I didn‘t realize how much I missed them until I got to see all their sweet little faces. It was so good to see them and be able to talk to them. Having about 14 two year olds on a zoom call sure is funny and cute!

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
