Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was incredibly impressed by Woodson‘s use of language. This book is short - the audiobook is only 4 hours long - but the amount she conveyed in such a small amount of space, using so few words was remarkable.
The story also jumped around so much, to different points in time & different points of view, but somehow I was never confused. I don‘t know how she did that! I will definitely be looking for more of her work in the future.

Pickpick

In short, vividly realized vignettes that jump between past and present, Woodson unspools a poetic, powerful and engaging story about family, history, class, status, and education as well as generational trauma, teenage longing and what it is to love and be loved. It goes without saying the book is beautifully written and that it‘s a meaningful, engaging story— Woodson after all—but I‘ll say it anyway. A fast, entertaining read.

This just wasn't for me, but there's no denying Woodson's talent for storytelling. I won't read any more of her, but I appreciate those who love her.

I will say, however, that the first sentence really caught my eye: "But that afternoon there was an orchestra playing." I'm not sure I've ever read a book that started with the word "but".

mandarchy Have you read her picture books? 3y
mom2bugnbee @mandarchy I have not! What do you suggest? 3y
mandarchy @mom2bugnbee I don't know what age your students are, but I serve K-5. Every year during our Kindness Challenge I read Each Kindness and we talk about how we want people to think about us as our actions show who we are. It's similar to 100 Dresses by Estes, but the target audience is Everybody. 3y
mom2bugnbee @mandarchy Thank you! I'm actually a college professor with kids ages 18 & 16, but I am not above reading a good children's book! ☺ 3y

Litsy wasn‘t letting me post last night 🙄anyway this is a re-read for me but Im doing audio instead of print. While it‘s a multi cast narration and it has Bahni Turpin, I‘m not LOVING the audio as much as I thought I would. Somehow, the words felt more special when I heard them in my mind instead of out loud 🤷🏼‍♀️ Im still enjoying the story though!!

Megabooks Yes, this has fantastic full-cast narration!! 3y
alisiakae I‘ve had a lot of problems with Litsy lately, especially with notifications 3y
alisiakae I listened to this specifically because Bahni and Woodson were two of the narrators! I went to a reading with Jacqueline Woodson a few years ago and love listening to her read her work. 3y
Cinfhen Yeah, Litsy is not performing well. It takes AGES to load comments and notifications😩 @4thhouseontheleft 3y

Haven't gotten much reading done in the past week as we've been settling back into life as a party of four - oldest daughter is home from Boston U for the summer! ☺ Finally diving into this one today for #Authoramonth.
