Miracle Country: A Memoir | Kendra Atleework
12 posts | 9 read | 9 to read
Blending family memoir and environmental history, Kendra Atleework conveys a fundamental truth: the places in which we live, live onsometimes painfullyin us. This is a powerful, beautiful, and urgently important book. Julie Schumacher, author of Dear Committee Members and The Shakespeare Requirement Kendra Atleework grew up in Swall Meadows, in the Owens Valley of the Eastern Sierra Nevada, where annual rainfall averages five inches and in drought years measures closer to zero. Kendras family raised their children to thrive in this harsh landscape, forever at the mercy of wildfires, blizzards, and gale-force winds. Most of all, the Atleework children were raised on unconditional love and delight in the natural world. But it came at a price. When Kendra was six, her mother was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease, and she died when Kendra was sixteen. Her family fell apart, even as her father tried to keep them together. Kendra took flight from her bereft family, escaping to the enemy city of Los Angeles, and then Minneapolis, land of all trees, no deserts, no droughts, full lakes, water everywhere you look. But after years of avoiding the pain of her hometown, she realized that she had to go back, that the desert was the only place she could live. Like Wild, Miracle Country is a story of flight and return, bounty and emptiness, and the true meaning of home. But it also speaks to the ravages of climate change and its permanent destruction of the way of life in one particular town.

A non-linear stream of consciousness memoir about place and family encompassing the personal, historical, and environmental that meanders far and wide without a unifying narrative, this made me yawn a lot more than I should have. This book is a lover letter to the Owens Valley, a place that is so easy to fall in love with. Knowing that this area is just a few hours drive from my home in Nevada gives me great joy as I can totally understand the author's love and pride in it. If you love books from Cheryl Strayed, Rebecca Solnit, or Terry Tempest Williams, I highly recommend this memoir.

#bookmoods #inthemountains

A memoir about a girl growing up in the Owens Valley in the shadows of the Sierra Nevadas in California. I haven‘t been camping recently but when I do we go to the Sierra Nevada mountains and every time the beauty takes my breath away. On my tbr list.

I was lucky enough to get a copy of this from the #LibraryThing #EarlyReviewers program back in 2020, and I‘m so glad I finally picked it up. A moving family memoir but even more remarkable for the gorgeous, dense writing and for its meditations on California. I now have a long list of things about my state, past and present, that I need to know more about! I will absolutely read more from Atleework if she writes it.

𝙈𝙞𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙡𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙮 is a superbly literary and lyrical work of creative nonfiction. Kendra Atleework's use of language is stunningly good for a debut work, and carries the reader effortlessly through the changing focus of her story.

I listened to the audiobook through Libby.

Started this one last night to take a break from all the mysteries I‘ve been reading. Anticipating non-fiction November, I guess.

I got my next LibraryThing Early Reviewers book today. Adding it to my August TBR, which is really growing! I‘m excited to read it, it sounds right up my alley. 📚

Sace That cover is beautiful. 4y
Soubhiville Unfortunately this was a bit too dry and not what I was expecting. @Hooked_on_books maybe you‘d be interested in this one? If so I‘ll drop it in the mail for you. 4y
Hooked_on_books Sure, I love dry. 😂 Just teasing. It sounds interesting to me, especially in contrast to where I currently live with 200+ inches of rain per year. Thanks for thinking of me! I‘ll be watching the PO Box for it. 4y
Soubhiville Lol, I wasn‘t implying that you love boring books or anything @Hooked_on_books ! You just tend to read a lot more NF than I do. I‘ll drop it at the PO some time this week. Let‘s test how damaged they‘ve made the system so far... although I know mail was already taking ages longer than it should to get to you. 4y
Hooked_on_books Sorry, couldn‘t help teasing you a bit. 😜 It‘s true some NF can be dry. I didn‘t read it at all for years but grew to like it more and more in my 30s. For a while I read much more NF than fiction but am more balanced in my reading now. I have plenty to keep me busy until it arrives—I‘ll just be delighted to know it‘s coming. ☺️ 4y

A touching memoir that connects the author's love for California nature and the death of her mother in beautiful prose. A must-read for fans of Cheryl Strayed's “Wild“ and Joan Didion. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

5🌟I really enjoyed this memoir! Atleework weaves past and present seamlessly. A memoir about returning home, overcoming painful pasts and finding where you truly belong. This book was reminiscent of Cheryl Strayed's memoir Wild. About losing and finding yourself, the complexities and love of family, but also about the realities and affects climate change can have on people. Expected July 14th! #bookreview #bookstagram

EKonrad Reading this one right now! 😊 4y
