All the Tears in China
All the Tears in China | SULARI. GENTILL
6 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
Shanghai in 1935 is a 20th century Babylon, an expatriate playground where fortunes are made and lost, where East and West collide, and the stakes include life itself. Into this cultural melting pot, Rowland Sinclair arrives from Sydney to represent his brother at international wool negotiations. The black sheep of the family, Rowland is under strict instructions to commit to nothing - but a brutal murder makes that impossible. As suspicion falls on him, Rowland enters a desperate bid to find answers in a city ruled by taipans and tycoons, where politics and vice are entwined with commerce, and where the only people he can truly trust are his long-term friends, an artist, a poet and a free-spirited sculptresss.

#JumpStart2021 #CozyRead The Rowland Sinclair series by Australian author Sulari Gentill definitely fits the prompt of Cozy Read. Set in 1930s Sydney, Australia, Rowly is a painter from a very wealthy family. Defying his father & brothers expectations, he surrounds himself with a group that includes a communist poet & a female sculptor. They get involved in scandals & danger, further inflaming his relationship with his family. Highly recommend!

erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve been meaning to read this author ever since you recommended it a few years ago! Someday 🤞😂 3y
Clwojick Ooooh! I am loving those flowers in the background! I miss summer! 3y

Bk14 of #Scarathlon2020 #Screamathon2020 #Pageathon #Sbooktober #BookishBingo #RockyHorrorathon #ReadLikeHellathon #Strangeathon & Bk7 of #OutstandingOctober is done! So far I‘ve read for 151+hrs this month which is awesome. The 9th book in the Rowly Sinclair series, instead of 30s Sydney, it‘s set in Shanghai where Rowly & co have gone to help out the family business but instead get caught up in the Murder of a “Taxi Girl”. 376pts #TeamSlaughter

Clwojick You're crushing it! 151 hours! 4y
Andrew65 That‘s such an incredible amount of reading! 👏👏👏 4y
Lizpixie @Clwojick @Andrew65 my garden is at a standstill at the moment due to house renovations and the hubs working nearly every day so I‘ve got plenty of time to read. More than I‘ve had for a few months anyway. Great timing for all these ‘thons! 4y

Bk13 of #Scarathlon2020 #Screamathon2020 #Pageathon #Sbooktober #BookishBingo #RockyHorrorathon #ReadLikeHellathon #Strangeathon & Bk6 of #OutstandingOctober is the 9th in the Rowly Sinclair series. The novels are set in 1930s Sydney mostly, about a rich artist & his group of bohemian friends that get entangled in mysteries & scandal. I loved these from the beginning, especially when I won the whole series signed from Booktopia! 1pt #TeamSlaughter

Clwojick Stunning cover! 4y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 4y

I had to wait more than two years for the audio version to be published, but it was worth it. I really liked the change of scenery and the slight but realistic character development of our beloved protagonists. I‘m anxious how the series will go on as we‘re definitely gearing up for WWII now and i really don‘t wanna see any of them go to war...

CarolynM The first book was set in 1932 and the 10th appears to be 1935 so there's time for a few more adventures yet🙂 Can't wait to see where they'll be next. 4y
Lizpixie It‘s an amazing series hey? I love the whole gang, plus it‘s mostly set in my hometown, though over 40yrs before I was born of course☺️ 4y

More international adventures for Rowland Sinclair and his friends, this time in the cultural melting pot of Shanghai. As is usual for this series, an entertaining plot was set against a fascinating and well researched background of the place and politics of the time. #ozfiction

#BookMail Pt2 This isn‘t in the database, which unfortunately seems to happen a lot with Australian authors. The new book in the Rowland Sinclair mysteries brings Rowly & gang to Shanghai. It‘s 1935 & Rowly is in China representing his brother at wool negotiations until a murder happens & Rowland is under suspicion. Getting out of China may just prove harder than escaping Germany. Love this series so much, it‘s a local spin in cozy crime.

erzascarletbookgasm I‘m very curious about this series. I‘ve only heard of this author because of your recommendation. 5y
Freespirit I have A Few Right Thinking Men on my TBR list. 5y
CarolynM Just starting this one🙂 5y
CarolynM @erzascarletbookgasm @Freespirit I love this series. A Few Right Thinking Men and Paving the New Road are especially good. 5y
