The Zealot and the Emancipator
The Zealot and the Emancipator: John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, and the Struggle for American Freedom | H. W. Brands
7 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
Gifted storyteller and bestselling historian H. W. Brands narrates the epic struggle over slavery as embodied by John Brown and Abraham Lincolntwo men moved to radically different acts to confront our nations gravest sin. John Brown was a charismatic and deeply religious man who heard the God of the Old Testament speaking to him, telling him to destroy slavery by any means. When Congress opened Kansas territory to slavery in 1854, Brown raised a band of followers to wage war. His men tore pro-slavery settlers from their homes and hacked them to death with broadswords. Three years later, Brown and his men assaulted the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, hoping to arm slaves with weapons for a race war that would cleanse the nation of slavery. Browns violence pointed ambitious Illinois lawyer and former officeholder Abraham Lincoln toward a different solution to slavery: politics. Lincoln spoke cautiously and dreamed big, plotting his path back to Washington and perhaps to the White House. Yet his caution could not protect him from the vortex of violence Brown had set in motion. After Browns arrest, his righteous dignity on the way to the gallows led many in the North to see him as a martyr to liberty. Southerners responded with anger and horror to a terrorist being made into a saint. Lincoln shrewdly threaded the needle between the opposing voices of the fractured nation and won election as president. But the time for moderation had passed, and Lincolns fervent belief that democracy could resolve its moral crises peacefully faced its ultimate test. The Zealot and the Emancipator is acclaimed historian H. W. Brandss thrilling and page-turning account of how two American giants shaped the war for freedom.

An interesting and illuminating juxtaposition of two very different people and two very different approaches to abolition. I'm a little concerned that I'm finding Brown--who was more than a little unbalanced and who was undeniably a murderer--a much more interesting and, in some ways, more admirable character than Lincoln, who was as much interested in his political career as he was in any kind of justice for enslaved people.

I learned a lot reading this book. I knew very little about John Brown outside the common stories. Living in southwestern Missouri, I am familiar with the bushwhackers on the Missouri/Kansas border but I didn‘t realize John Brown contributed to that violence as well. Brands gives an honest appraisal of both men, showing both the good and the bad found in surviving documentation. I will try to read more as this book merely scrapes to surface.

Suet624 I really liked this one if you‘re looking for more on John Brown. 3y
Ericalambbrown @Suet624 ooohhhhh! Thank you!! 3y
Suet624 I read it years ago and there are still scenes I vividly remember and talk about. Russell Banks is a great writer and he does an amazing job with this one. 3y

This book fell between a pick and a so-so. It's not poorly written, but I feel the author tried to cover too much with Brown's and Lincoln's lives, plus the evolution of the anti- slavery movement, that none of his subjects got the depth they deserved. 3 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
