If you're looking for a dark, witchy sci-fi fantasy centering a strong female protagonist, this might be a pick for you! I enjoyed it but I didn't love it. A few things didn't work for me, especially every characters' insistence that words without set meaning definitely have this one specific random interpretation that doesn't make a ton of sense. That part was just frustrating and was a major plot element. #LGBTQIA #Witchy

ShyBookOwl I just started one by Sambury an hour ago! Delicious Monsters. I'm LOVING it so far (3 chapters in) 14mo
Kenyazero @ShyBookOwl nice! I hope you keep loving it. I definitely like Sambury's style. 13mo

I'm loving this book so far but everyone's inflexibility on the meaning of words is killing me! They're all like "destroy definitely = kill, so you must murder someone!" and "First love definitely = romantic/sexual love!" ? I get that the author may be trying to mislead the reader, but I find it extremely tedious that not a single person has suggested any alternative readings of either word.

My two favorite audios of the month are big and at the top - I am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter and In the Lives of Puppets.

my fave graphic novel this past month - Tokyo Rose Zero Hour which really dug into some WWII history I was not familiar with and brought to light a story that was so compelling, especially in graphic format.

Hoping to push my reading more this summer!

kspenmoll I so enjoyed I am not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter- we have it has a book group choice for our freshman. (edited) 2y

Please tell me there is a sequel. This was an outstanding YA fantasy. I loved Voya and I want more! If you like strong female characters, magic, and moral dilemmas, this one is for you.

Voya is set to receive her family‘s gift of magic when she completes a task given by an ancestor. The task? Destroy her first love. The problem? She‘s never been in love.

There was so much I loved about this story. Fascinating magic system, sci-fi & fantasy elements fused together, fully fleshed out & beautifully diverse secondary characters. But ultimately, this was a slow read, with a pretty unsatisfying & frustrating ending for me. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

BookmarkTavern Chapter five has a description of the whipping of a black woman and the murder of her lover by a white mob 2y
KateReadsYA @ozma.of.oz I definitely agree with this 100 percent, my review included my frustration on the ending as well. 2y

We‘re supposed to be getting up to 16 inches of snow today. ❄️🙃❄️

Fortunately, it‘s the beginning of my weekend, so I get to turn on the fireplace, make some mint truffle hot chocolate, and curl up with a blanket and the #WhimsicalReads book! 💜

I finished this up for the #whimsicalreads book club this evening. It was good, but I won't read the second book because all my questions were answered and I don't feel like I want more of this world. It was very enlightening and different from what I've read lately. Do I think Kei's future should have been destroyed? No! Luc might not have had as much, but he still had family, and he could have had his freedom unlike her being tied to their home.

KristiAhlers I feel the same way. I enjoyed this one but I won't continue with it. 2y
KateReadsYA @KristiAhlers What I liked most about it is that it's not what I was expecting! 2y

I‘m making even more of an effort to diversify my reading this year, starting with pushing play on audiobooks that come in. I liked this one a lot, a long listen but really engaging. I loved the family and found it really hard to figure out how the plot would resolve. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It's black history month and I can not express enough how important it is to celebrate black girls! Growing up in a state that likes to turn the other way(ahem: Texas)was so difficult on other cultures and races! My friends were mainly black girls, and I remember how differently they were treated growing up in a dominant white school. Continued..

KateReadsYA I heard "you're pretty for a black girl" more times than I can count, "let me touch your hair", & don't even get me started on the looks they received when showing up to my job or when we went shopping. Black girls need so much more praise, love, and opportunities than what they are given! But the world is waking up more and more, voices are being heard and action is being taken. Love this shoutout Liselle writes to her main audience. 2y
Zuhkeeyah This is the best dedication. I agree 1000% with every word of it. 2y
KateReadsYA @Zuhkeeyah when she says the sassy comedic relief, ugh the sadness my heart feels! I did not expect a shoutout like she wrote and I know any black girl that reads it is gonna feel HEARD & SEEN. 2y

Gosh, I love this cover. I‘ve been reading a lot more mystical/fantasy books lately, and I‘m still trying to figure out what I like and don‘t like. While I thought this would check all my boxes, it ended up being a 3.5 ⭐️ read for me. I‘ll still read the next in the series, but I‘m not itching to dig into it immediately. #whimsicalreads #buddyread #loveathon

Picked these up yesterday evening from Barnes and Noble while walking around an outside marketplace! Very very excited to read them soon. I was so close to getting zodiac academy: the awakening but there are just too many in that series and I don't need that stress right now haha!

Voya received her calling, meaning first bleeding. The ritual is that one of the ancestors will appear to assign her a task that must be completed in order to become a witch. YA fantasy with a “pinch” of sci-if which I didn‘t expect, mystery. I liked the story it was ok, entertaining but unnecessarily too long. It appeals to the importance to take decisions. I think is overrated in GR. the bleeding ritual parts were disgusting, nasty🤢3.3⭐️

Gissy Love that cover😍

TheAromaofBooks Sometimes it feels like authors just want to be kind of “edgy“ to seem more creative. 😕 3y
Gissy @TheAromaofBooks Maybe 😳but the story was entertaining. I need to read different genres and for different audiences because I need variation in my monotone life🤣and I really love that cover with those colors, silly because that‘s maybe irrelevant to the story but I can‘t help it🤷🏽‍♀️ 3y

It felt appropriate to do some #audiocooking while I sank into a book about a talented teenage cook. BLOOD LIKE MAGIC starts off with some major infodumping, but after last night‘s arancini-making session and a couple other tasks today, I‘ve made it far enough in that I‘m invested in the characters and their world. I loveloveLOVE how trans-inclusive Sambury‘s near-future Canada is, too.

when Voya fails her challenge to inherit her family magic, she gets a second chance if she destroys her first love. one small problem. she‘s never been in love. until she finds someone who just might fit the bill.
sooooo upset to finish this and realize it‘s a duology that won‘t be finished until later this year, definitely very YA, but Voya‘s growth was *chefs kiss*

In 2049 Toronto, Voya has just had her first bleeding, which means she will have to complete a task to determine whether or not she will have magic like the rest of her family. While this is the plot, much of this book is dedicated to developing the characters of Voya‘s family, which lends it a wonderful richness not always found in YA. I really enjoyed this and apparently it‘s the start of a series, so I‘m excited for more!
