Arabia: A Journey Through The Heart of the Middle East | Levison Wood
9 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
Shortlisted for the 2019 Edward Stanford Award '[A] rollicking Boys' Own adventure' - Spectator 'This heart-stopping personal account of historic Arabia today.' - Compass Magazine Following in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia and Wilfred Thesiger, Arabia is an insight into Levison Wood's most complex and daring expedition yet: an epic and unprecedented 5000-mile journey through 13 countries, circumnavigating the Arabian Peninsula. Honest, reflective and poignant, Arabia is a historical, religious and spiritual journey, through some of the harshest and most beautiful environments on Earth. Exploring the Middle East through the lives, hearts and hopes of its people, Levison Wood challenges the perceptions of an often misunderstood part of the world, seeing how the region has changed and examining the stories we don't often hear about in the media.

My 15 year old son and I were riveted by this when we listened to it in the car this week. Wood does such a good job describing cultures and their differences without being judgmental. He narrates the audiobook himself.

BookBelle84 I enjoy all of his travel books 9mo
BarbaraBB Haven‘t read this one yet but I have enjoyed the books I did. My next will be 9mo
Bookwormjillk @BarbaraBB I liked that one. I‘m thinking of re-reading it this year for #ReadingTheAmericas2023 9mo
BarbaraBB Glad you liked it! I am going to read it for #ReadingTheAmericas23 as well! 9mo

An engaging travelogue in Arabia which the author crosses the countries in the Arabian peninsula
Read this for #readingasia2021 . I may have to count this for multiple countries if I can't get to them this year. :)
Also as my September #bookspin

British author and photographer Levison Wood travels the Arabian Middle East. Ravaged by war, and tormented by terrorism he takes a lot of risks. But he does make it and he learns that prejudices are often just that. With respect for each country and its people he takes the reader along on his adventures and encounters. I hung on his every word. Thanks so much for knowing I‘d love this one Cindy, and sharing it with me ❤️

#WeeklyForecast 34/21

I am about to start the #NYRBBookClub selection and am also looking forward to Arabia for #ReadingAsia2021. Maps for Lost Lovers is my choice for #FoodAndLit. If I‘m done with the challenges prompts and if I‘m able to resist it until then, I will start Once There Were Wolves. My expectations are sky high!

AmyG I can only say, halfway through, Once There Were Wolves is very very good. 3y
BarbaraBB @AmyG I know how much you loved Migrations so that means a lot! 3y
Cinfhen Big week for you!!! Hope your reads deliver ❣️❣️❣️ 3y

BarbaraBB @Megabooks No I don‘t think this is the best week for you to read this one 🐶 3y

Levison Wood is the definition of world traveler, and he‘s had some incredible experiences. Here he shares his 6 month trek tracing the paths of his childhood heroes: TE Lawrence, Sir Richard Burton & Wilfred Thesiger. Entertaining, informative and nonjudgmental, Lev shares his journey through some of the most dangerous and feared countries. I loved this travelogue. Thanks again @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB for your challenge #ReadingAsia2021 👇🏼

Cinfhen Places visited:
Kurdistan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Yemen, Jordan, Israel, Palestinian, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Somalia ( not in order of places visited)

I bought this book a few weeks back but forget to post #ReadingAsia21 Anyhow, I picked it up this morning and I can‘t put it down. It‘s the BEST type of travelogue; exciting, adventurous, dangerous, entertaining, informative and gives you a sense of each place & person met along the way. It covers SO MANY countries/ not sure which I‘ll pick...maybe more than one ( is that allowed @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB ?!??)

Librarybelle I think some of the smaller countries will be harder to find books about them specifically. I like travelogues like this too, so I am stacking this one! 3y
BookBelle84 I read all of his books. He's always great! 3y
BarbaraBB Definitely stacked, sounds like my kind of book. Of course you can use it for several countries. Bend the rules the way you like ❤️ 3y
Cinfhen I‘m definitely going to look for more of his books @BookBelle84 I love his style of writing / thanks @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle for the flexibility of your challenge/ I‘m gonna wait to see what countries I can‘t find before I count this one 3y
